A hippo can stand anywhere between five and six feet tall at shoulder level,
with a body length of about fifteen feet. The thick layer of blubber beneath its
skin helps the hippo to preserve its body heat. This is necessary since it
spends so much time in the water. Its ears, eyes and nostrils are placed in line
with the top of its head. This allows the animal to breathe, see and hear while
its body is submerged in water.

Part 4
I was born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska. I moved to Lawrence, Kansas in 2006 to
attend the University of Kansas. Both of my parents were from Kansas but had moved around
the country a few times before setting in Lincoln. I still have family here in Kansas. I did not
complete my degree, but instead found a new passion in the food industry.
I now own two restaurants, specialising in simple food that is still delicious. I was
offered my first break in 2009 when the chef, Lionel Kipps, offered me a managerial position
in one of his restaurants. I soon took over the restaurant and that expanded into a second
restaurant. Lionel is still at the first restaurant and interestingly, his brother is a chef at my
second restaurant. Everyone has put in a lot of hard work and dedication into these two places.
Besides owning the two restaurants, I spend a lot of my extra time helping out at the
local food bank and sponsoring food to many of the events organised by charitable
organisations around towns. I am thinking of dabbling in a cookbook in the next year. It has
been non-stop indeed. I love what I do and I don’t I will find myself ever doing nothing. I
have my own managers running the restaurant but I am still very actively involved in all
aspects of the restaurants. I take interest in the menu, the staff, the decor and my customers.
It’s wonderful that I live in a town that appreciates good food and the joys of dining.
The student community adds to the vibrant flavor of city. There are many customers who are
regulars, coming in about twice a week. There are also some occasional out-of-town visitors
who hear about us on YalpEats.com. I love meeting them all. They are the people who make
my business a good one.
People ask me where I see myself in five years. I have my own wedding to plan and
maybe buy a house with my husband. Professionally, I have that cookbook to look forward to.
I also have had a growing interest in people asking me to offer cooking classes. That sounds
intriguing. I might consider that. In the meantime, I hope to enjoy each day as it comes, and to
8 given and the people who have helped
be always thankful for the opportunities I have been
me get here.

At first, Sarah was not sure what to do, but she got an idea when she saw her mum doing the dishes. She
asked her mum if she could earn some money by doing housework.

Mum thought for a minute and said, “if you cut the grass, I’ll give you RM20.” Sarah quickly went
to the garden and took the lawnmower out. However, she was still short by RM 30 after her mum had paid
her. Suddenly, she noticed that her neighbour’s car was a little dirty. She could wash it to make
the money she needed.
She went next door and asked her neighbour, Mrs Choo, if she could get some money by washing
her car. When Sarah finished the job, Mrs Choo paid her RM30. But, as Sarah was leaving,
