I. Context and Rationale
Learning never stops, it’s indeed a continues process. As pupils moves on on higher
level of education lots of vocabularies are being acquired. It’s vital that, when words
are being acquired, it is best when it’s properly comprehended by the reader or the
listener. The first stage of formal education is elementary school, which provides
individuals with a basic education and plays a significant part in classroom activities.
The most crucial of these tasks is giving kids linguistic skills. For students to gain
and develop reading comprehension abilities in the following grades, it is important
to emphasize the teaching of reading in particular. Reading comprehension abilities
are largely taught to pupils in primary school through reading and writing lessons. In
connection, reading comprehension helps children build social-emotional skills and
broadens their imagination.
One of the fundamental abilities that should be taught to kids in the first few years of
elementary school is reading comprehension. They can succeed in school courses
and in life if they can develop reading comprehension abilities. Learning to read
comprehension seems to be considerably more crucial and practical in elementary
school, which is the first year of a child's academic career. These abilities are used
by students in all of their classes, and they have a direct impact on their academic
lives.
Understanding the viewpoints or messages that the author intends to convey through
their writing is an essential part of the reading comprehension process (May, &
Rizzardi, 2002). Skills in reading comprehension are ones that people can utilize
throughout their entire lives, not just in school. Additionally, they can employ these
talents in all of their courses, not only those that are connected to their mother
tongue. The success of students in other classes is largely dependent on their
reading comprehension performance (Bloom, 1995). According to research, reading
comprehension directly correlates with success in mathematics and science
(O'Reilly, & McNamara, 2007). (Vilenius-Tuohimaa, Aunola, & Nurmi, 2008; Walker,
Zhang, & Surber, 2008). Different strategies, methods, approaches, and instruments
can be used by educators and teachers to teach reading comprehension abilities,
which are seen to be of high value.
Reading will still be laborious if the processes don't work together smoothly.
Sometimes we can recognize words without being able to give them much meaning,
and other times we can recognize words and grasp them. According to Ramlan
(2002) and Emerald (1932), reading involves more than only understanding the
visual representations of words. A string of words serves as a visual representation
of its developing understanding of the meaning and ideas. It entails seeing the word
and understanding it in relation to its context. According to the description, reading is
a complicated intellectual process that involves understanding the meaning of the
words and manipulating the text, rather than just shouting out the words by name.
By making connections between what has been read and what the reader already
knows and thinking about all of this information until it is comprehended,
comprehension includes creating meaning that is rational and accurate. The ultimate
goal of reading teaching is comprehension. Comprehension strategies comes in
many ways such as short reading. This has significance on the cognitive process
that involves decoding symbols to arrive at meaning.
This study is based on the premise that it is both possible and necessary to assist
teachers in developing practices that address the whole child by
integrating children's social-emotional skills. This study adds to the field
by identifying the conditions that encourage teachers to develop and
implement social-emotional learning programs and practices.
This study is based on the premise that is both attainable and necessary to assists in
the enhancement of the reading comprehension of the pupils in particular. Moreover,
it aims to contribute in the improvement of reading comprehension and coming up
with strategies and interventions.
II. Action Research Question
The researchers if this study will be observing the participants on their reading
comprehension skills using short reading selection (stories) and hands- on activities.
Researchers will select and categorize the respondents from poor, moderate and
advance readers for observations and also for time allotment schedule. All activities
will be collected for checking and evaluation. In addition, aspects such as reading
and analyzing skills, visualizing skills and comprehension skills will be strictly
observe. All observations will be considered for the making of the questionnaire
which will serve as basis in evaluating the respondents. The questionnaire that will
be used will be supported with rubrics and sources for reliability.
As the study aims to enhance the reading comprehension skills of the respondents,
here are the 7 strategies that will be used; activating, summarizing, monitoring and
clarifying, visualizing and organizing, searching and selecting, questioning and
inferring. To make this in reality, researchers will provide best activities that will boost
the interest of the respondents for better response and participation.
IV. Action Research Methods
Qualitative research design will be used in this study which is more on descriptive
method in gathering data on enhancing reading comprehension skills of learners.
The study will be asses basing from the data gathered through observation which will
be converted into a Likert scale questionnaire which will be used by the researchers
to assess the learners individually by using a specific rubric as a guide.
The respondents of the study would be the Grade-6 pupils. Simple random sampling
will be used by the researchers in which every member from grade 6 has an equal
chance of being selected as a respondent to the study. Random selection is a key
component of probability sampling, which enables the researchers to draw robust
statistical conclusions about the entire group of respondents. Through this sampling,
researchers of this study may come up to a reliable data information result.
In this action research plan, researchers will make use of 3 ways on data collection.
The first one is that researchers will record their observation of every individual
learner as they do reading. Second is to convert the data gathered into a Likert scale
questionnaire which will be used by the researchers to rate their respondents. Lastly,
results will be assessed through percentage computation each number through the
use of a specific rubric.
The purpose of this study is to enhance the reading comprehension skills of learners
using short reading selection. The purpose of the data selection process during the
course of the study will be to improve the students reading comprehension abilities.
The data collection of this action research will include qualitative research.
Furthermore, the quantitative data consists the percentage result that will be drawn
from the Likert scale result for judgement.
The researchers will help in enhancing the learner comprehension skills. The action
research researchers will politely ask permission to the teacher assign for
observation in order to gather information that would be the basis for making the
Likert scale questionnaire that will be based on a rubric.
