IMPROVING READING
COMPREHENSION
THROUGH EXTENSIVE
READING ACTIVITY
Investigating the relationship between extensive
reading and reading comprehension is a
worthwhile endeavor. Existing research, practical
observations, and the importance of reading
comprehension in both academic and real-world
settings provide a solid foundation for this
exploration. Strategies are needed to address
individual differences, and understand the long-
term effects of extensive reading programs.
Extensive reading can foster a love for reading,
leading to increased motivation and engagement.
Students often struggle to comprehend text if
they don't understand the meaning of many
words within it. This can be exacerbated if
students lack the ability to use context clues to
infer meaning. Lack of necessary strategies to
effectively process and understand text. This
includes: Reading without a purpose or strategy
wherein students may simply read words
without engaging in active comprehension.
Overanalyzing text and Poor response to
reading activities. Students have limited
exposure to reading materials, both in and out
A study by Budi Prasetyo (2014) investigated the impact
of extensive reading on the reading comprehension found
that extensive reading significantly improved students'
reading comprehension scores. Nam Hee Suk (2016)
conducted a quasi-experimental study in a group of high
school students. The study compared students who
engaged in extensive reading with those who received
only intensive reading instruction. The results showed
that the extensive reading group significantly
outperformed the control group in reading
comprehension, reading rate, and vocabulary acquisition.
Suk's (2016) study also found that extensive reading led
to significant gains in vocabulary knowledge,
demonstrating the link between vocabulary and
Alan Maley, an expert in English language
teaching, emphasizes that extensive reading
provides repeated exposure to language in
context, leading to deeper vocabulary
acquisition and consolidation. The research
consistently demonstrates the positive effects of
extensive reading on reading comprehension,
vocabulary development, reading fluency,
motivation, and overall language development.
This body of evidence provides a strong
rationale for further exploring and implementing
extensive reading programs to enhance reading
Research Questions:

1. To what extent does extensive reading activity improve

reading comprehension in students of different age groups (e.g.,
elementary, middle, high school)?
2. How does extensive reading activity impact different aspects
of reading comprehension, such as identifying main ideas,
inferring meaning, and making connections?
3. What are the long-term effects of extensive reading activity
on reading comprehension and overall language proficiency?
4. What are the key factors that contribute to the success of
extensive reading programs, such as student motivation, teacher
support, and access to appropriate materials?
5. How can technology be effectively utilized to support and
enhance extensive reading programs, such as through digital
libraries, e-books, and online reading platforms?
Research Design

This study employs a quasi-experimental

approach, comparing the reading
comprehension performance of two groups:
an experimental group engaging in
extensive reading activities and a control
group receiving traditional reading
instruction. The study will involve
participants from senior high school
students, to capture a broad spectrum of
Participants

The participants of this study will consist of

senior high students that randomly assigned
to either the experimental or control group.
The sample size will be determined based
on statistical power analysis to ensure the
study's validity and reliability. Teachers will
also facilitate the extensive reading
activities and providing insights into
student engagement and progress.
Data Collection Tools

Data collection will involve pre-tests and

post-tests to measure reading
comprehension levels before and after the
intervention. Additionally, observations,
interviews, and questionnaires will be
utilized to gather qualitative data on student
experiences, attitudes towards reading, and
perceptions of the extensive reading
activities. Reading logs and journals may
Data Analysis

The collected data will undergo both

quantitative and qualitative analysis.
Descriptive statistics will be used to analyze
numerical data from the pre-tests and post-
tests, determining the change in reading
comprehension scores within and between
groups. Qualitative analysis will involve
thematic coding of observational data,
interviews, and questionnaires to identify
Technical Description

Overview:
This study explores the effectiveness of implementing
extensive reading activities to enhance reading
comprehension among students. By incorporating a
structured extensive reading program in the classroom,
the study aims to improve students' reading skills and
foster a love for reading. The research design combines
elements of classroom action research and quasi-
experimental methods to assess the impact of extensive
reading on reading comprehension levels of the senior
high students. Through data collection and analysis, the
study seeks to identify the benefits of extensive reading
The problem addressed is the inadequate reading
comprehension skills exhibited by many students,
particularly those struggling to make the transition from
"learning to read" to "reading to learn." This proposed
solution leverages the power of extensive reading, a
method that encourages reading for pleasure and
enjoyment, to improve reading comprehension and foster
a love for reading. This solution involves a multi-faceted
approach that combines elements of classroom action
research, quasi-experimental design, and best practices
in reading instruction. The core idea is to implement a
structured extensive reading program within the
classroom, providing students with access to a wide
Here are the Initial Steps:

1. Needs Assessment: Begin by assessing the current

reading comprehension levels of the target students.
This can be done through pre-tests, reading inventories,
or teacher observations. The assessment should identify
specific areas of weakness and individual learning needs.

2. Material Selection: Carefully select a variety of

reading materials that are engaging, accessible, and
aligned with the students' interests and reading levels.
This could include books, magazines, graphic novels,
online articles, or even digital audiobooks. The goal is to
create a diverse library that caters to individual
3. Establish Reading Time: Integrate dedicated time for extensive
reading into the daily or weekly schedule. This could be a
designated "Sustained Silent Reading" (SSR) period, or it could be
incorporated into other subject areas. Ensure that students have
ample time to read at their own pace and choose materials that
interest them.

4. Foster a Positive Reading Environment: Create a classroom

atmosphere that celebrates reading and encourages active
engagement. This could involve setting up a cozy reading nook,
displaying student book reviews, or organizing book clubs.
Encourage discussions about reading experiences and provide
opportunities for students to share their thoughts and insights.

5. Provide Guidance and Support: While extensive reading

emphasizes student choice and autonomy, it's important to provide
guidance and support. This could involve offering reading strategies
Once these initial steps are implemented, the program
will be monitored and evaluated through ongoing data
collection and analysis. This will involve tracking
student reading logs, conducting post-tests, and
gathering qualitative feedback through observations
and interviews. The program will be adapted and
refined based on the collected data to ensure its
effectiveness and maximize student learning.

This proposed solution offers a promising approach to

improving reading comprehension by fostering a love
for reading and providing students with the opportunity
to engage with diverse texts at their own pace. By
implementing these initial steps and continuously
