FAMILY LANGUAGE POLICY
Majority of the respondents said that they have different native language to their spouse or partner. Which means, most of the participants of the conducted study are from different places which might have caused cultural diversity including the language as part of culture.
Researchers asked the respondents if they thought of changing the first
language of, most of them answered No. The respondents don’t really want to change their language of their child but according to them “Karamihan naman kasi ngayon English at Tagalog lang. Kaya yun na lang din ang gamitin.” The guardian of the child chose to teach what they think is the most used language to their children.
When it comes to language adjustments. Researchers also asked the question to
the respondents, If there is an adjustments since Tagalog is the most used language in Santiago City. Most of the respondents answered Yes there is. According to one of the respondent “Oo mas pinili nalang namin ang tagalog para mas magkaintindihan”.Since some of our respondents are not originally live here in Santiago there was an adjustment in language when they moved in Santiago basically because Tagalog is the most common used when communicating around the city.
Researchers also asked If the respondents prefer native language to be used by
their child or they want them to learn more english and tagalog since it is the medium of instruction use in schools? Most of the respondents answered that they prefer to used tagalog. According to respondents “Tagalog nalang ang gamitin kasi yun ang karaniwang ginagamit” some respondent also said that they want to learn their child to learn their native language but children are more focus to what they watch on media. “Yung language na pinapanood nila ang mas gusto” the parent said.
When it comes to the Language adjustment to be use by the respondents inside
their home. Majority of the respondents answered tagalog. Most of the parents chose to teach Tagalog to their children since it is the most language used in the community, even to the school the medium of instruction is Tagalog/ English. According to the respondent “Hindi well represented ang native language sa school and community”, “ Mas na eenganyo ang mga bata na pag aralan ang tagalog kesa ang native language nila”. Parents adjusted their language at home depending in what language that the community/ school mostly used.
Respondents also answered the question, Do the difference of your native
language affects your language choice to be teach to your child? Majority of the respondents answered Yes. Respondents said that the difference of parent’s native language affects their language. They do not know what language should they teach to their child since they have different native languages, the reason why they had to teach the language that they used to hear or mostly used in one community, according to the respondents “Tagalog nalang yun kasi nakasanayan nila” but there are respondents also wants their children to learn both parents native languages. According to some of them “tinuruan din namin sila mag Ibanag”. Their children also know some words but cannot properly articulate words most of them said that their children don’t know their native songs.
