HW 1

1) The document is a homework assignment for a topology course. It contains 11 problems, with problems marked with an asterisk meant to be submitted for grading and problems with two asterisks offering extra credit. 2) The problems cover topics like defining convergence and Cauchy sequences in metric spaces, showing functions are continuous, determining if sets are open or closed, constructing examples of open and closed sets, and proving metrics. 3) One question asks to prove the set of points (x,y) in R^2 where x^2 + y^2 is greater than or equal to 10 is closed, while another asks how many non-homeomorphic topologies exist on a two-element

Topology (TOP) / Spring 2009 / Alex Küronya

Homework 1

The problems with an asterisk are the ones that you are supposed to submit. The ones with two
asterisks are meant as more challenging, and by solving them you can earn extra credit.

1. Come up with a definition for convergence and Cauchy sequences in metric spaces.

2. (i) Show that the functions s, p : R2 −→ R given by

s(x, y) = x + y
p(x, y) = xy
are continuous.
(ii) Let f, g : X −→ R continuous functions. Then all of f ± g, f · g are continuous; if g(x) 6= 0 for
all x ∈ X, then fg is continuous as well.

3. (i) Is the function f : R2 − {(0, 0)} −→ R2

x y
f (x, y) = 2 2
,− 2
x +y x + y2
continuous on R2 − {(0, 0)}?
(ii) Is there a continuous function g : R2 −→ R2 for which
g|R2 −{(0,0)} = f ?
4. Let f : X −→ Y be a homeomorphism, xk a sequence in X. Then xk is convergent in X if and
only if f (xk ) is convergent in Y .

5. * Let α, β, γ be arbitrary real numbers. Prove that the so-called open half-space defined as
H = (x, y, z) ∈ R3 | αx + βy + γz > 0

is indeed an open subset of R3 .

6. Let X ⊆ Rn , p ∈ X, δ > 0. Then BX (p, δ) is open in X.

7. Prove that the set

(x, y) ∈ R2 | x2 + y 2 ≥ 10

is closed.

8. Is the set consisting of all point of the form n, n a natural number, open/closed in R?

9. Give examples of infinitely many open sets in R , the intersection of which is (i) open (ii) closed
(iii) neither open nor closed.

10. Show that the closed ball

D(x.δ) = {y ∈ Rn | |x − y| ≤ δ}
is indeed a closed subset of Rn .

11. * Prove that Z

d1 (f, g) = |f − g|dx
[a,b]
is a metric on C[a, b]. Is this still true if we replace continuous functions by Riemann integrable ones?

12. How many pairwise non-homeomorphic topologies are there on a two-element set?
