MA3101: Analysis III: IISER Kolkata Assignment-1 August 27, 2019

1. The document contains 14 problems related to analysis and topology. The problems cover topics like continuity of functions, connectedness of metric spaces, and properties of functions on spheres and Euclidean spaces. 2. Specific problems ask the reader to prove statements about continuous functions, connected subsets, separation axioms, and existence of continuous bijections between Euclidean spaces. 3. The problems progress from basic definitions and implications to more advanced concepts involving path connectedness, boundaries of sets, and properties of functions on spheres.

MA3101 : Analysis III

1. Let f be defined on an open interval (a, b) and let x ∈ (a, b). Consider
the following statements
(a) lim |f (x + h) − f (x)| = 0; (b) lim |f (x + h) − f (x − h)| = 0.
h→0 h→0

Prove that (a) always implies (b), and give an example in which (b)
holds but (a) does not.
2. Given a function f : R → R, define two sets A and B as follows
A = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : y < f (x)}, B = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : y > f (x)}.
Prove that f is continuous on R if and only if both A and B are open
subsets of R2 .
3. Determine whether the following functions f : R2 → R are continuous
or not. 
(xy)2

2 2, if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
(a) f (x, y) = (xy) +(x−y)
0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).

(x + y) sin( 1 ) sin( 1 ), if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
x y
(b) f (x, y) =
0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).

xy x2 −y2 , if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
x2 +y 2
(c) f (x, y) =
0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).
 3 2
 x y , if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
6 4
(d) f (x, y) =  x +y
0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).
 4 4
 x −y , if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
4 4
(e) f (x, y) =  x +y
0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).

y 2+ x3 sin x1 , if x 6= 0,
(f) f (x, y) =
y 2 , if x = 0.

x cos 1 , if y 6= 0,
y
(g) f (x, y) =
0, if y = 0.

 sin x−y2 , if |x| + |y| =
6 0,
|x|+|y|
(h) f (x, y) =
0, if |x| + |y| = 0.
4. Consider the function f : R2 → R defined as
 α β
 √x y , if (x, y) 6= (0, 0),
f (x, y) = x2 +y 2

0, if (x, y) = (0, 0).

Determine the values of α and β for which f is continuous on R2 .

5. Let (X, d) be a metric space, let {U, V } be a separation of X and let
A ⊆ X be connected. Then either A ⊆ U or A ⊆ V.
6. Let X be a connected subset of a metric space S. Let Y be a subset of
S such that X ⊆ Y ⊆ X̄, where X̄ is the closure of X. Prove that Y is
also connected. Deduce that X̄ is connected.
7. Let n ≥ 2, let A ⊆ Rn be countable. Then Rn \ A is path connected.
8. Prove that every connected metric space containing at least two points
is uncountable.
9. Prove that a metric space S is connected if and only if every nonempty
proper subset of S has a nonempty boundary.
10. Prove that a metric space S is connected if and only if every two-valued
function on S is constant.
11. Let A = {(x, y) : 0 < x ≤ 1, y = sin( x1 }, B = {(x, y) : x = 0, −1 ≤ y ≤
1} and let S = A ∪ B. Prove that S is connected but not pollygonally
connected.
12. Show that the set

S = {(x, y) ∈ R2 : 0 < y ≤ x2 , x 6= 0} ∪ {(0, 0)}

is connected in R2 , but not polygonally connected.

13. Show that for n ≥ 2, there does not exist any continuous bijection
f : Rn → R.
14. Let S = S n−1 be the unit sphere in Rn and let f : S → R be a
continuous function. Show that there must be a pair of diametrically
opposite points on S at which f assumes the same value.
