Math 101 Problem Set 2

The document is a mathematics problem set from the University of the Philippines that contains instructions warning against cheating and 6 problems related to probability. It informs students that cheating will result in failure of the course or suspension/expulsion. It provides formatting instructions and asks students to submit their solutions in pairs by the deadline.

MATHEMATICS 101 PROBLEM SET 2
First Semester, A.Y. 2021-2022

“Cheating is a form of intellectual dishonesty that will not be condoned. Anyone caught cheating shall be dealt with in accordance with the rules on
student conduct and discipline. Cheating is punishable with a grade of 5.0 in the course and/or (1) suspension for a period of not less than one year;
or (2) expulsion from the University.”

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS. Provide a NEAT and COMPLETE solution to each problem. Do this by pair.
Submit your output in a pdf format. Name your file as M101Section LastName1LastName2 ProbSet2.pdf. Incomplete
solutions will not be given full credit. Deadline of submission: WEDNESDAY, December 8, 2021 before 1:00 PM.

1. In a TV game show, 67 of the contestants are males and 33 are females. Only those who get the correct answer in a
round will proceed to the next round. On the first round, 40 males and 29 females were eliminated. Momo and her 4
male and 2 female friends or dabarkads made it to the next round. If at this point, a special prize (i.e., one year supply of
hair products) will be given to one of the qualified contestants at random, what is the probability that Momo or a female
contestant, or one of Momo dabarkads will bag the special prize?
2. A class in Math 10 is composed of 20 freshmen, 20 juniors, and 10 seniors. The final grades show that 5 of the freshmen,
4 of the juniors, and 6 of the seniors receive a grade of 1.00 for the course. If a student is chosen at random from this
class and is found to earn a grade of 1.00, what is the probability that he or she is a senior?
3. Jovy is currently enrolled in four Math subjects. To maintain a good standing in the Mathematics program, he has to
pass at least three of his Math subjects.
Suppose that the probability of passing all his Math subjects equal to the probability of passing three Math subjects.
Assume further that the probability of Jovy passing three subjects is 1/2 of the probability of passing two subjects. The
probability of passing two subjects is 1/3 of the probability of passing one subject. The probability of passing one subject
is 3/4 of the probability of failing all his subjects.
Construct the discrete probability distribution of the random variable that counts the number of Math subjects that Jovy
will pass. Is Jovy expected to have a good standing in the Mathematics program? Explain.

4. Based on experience, the probability that a BS Math student of a certain university will shift to other degree program in
his 2nd year is 0.06. For the First Semester of AY 2022-2023, the university expects to have 35 freshies in the BS Math
program. From this batch, the university aims to produce at least 85% sophomores in the BS Math program, that is, at
most 15% will leave the program after one year. What is the probability that this goal will be achieved?
5. Mr. Bean buys batches of N electronic components for his invention. Before a batch is accepted, n of the components are
selected at random from the batch and tested. If more than k components in the sample are found to be substandard,
the batch is then rejected.
(a) Find the probability that a batch, which actually contains five substandard components, is rejected when N = 30,
n = 5 and k = 1.
(b) Find the probability that a batch, which actually contains ten substandard components, is rejected when N = 60,
n = 10 and k = 1.
6. An automobile manufacturer is concerned about a fault in the braking mechanism of a particular model. The fault can,
on rare occasions, cause a catastrophe at high speed. The distribution of the number of cars per year that will experience
the catastrophe is a Poisson random variable with λ = 10.
(a) What is the probability that 5 cars per year will experience a catastrophe?
(b) What is the probability that more than 3 cars per year will experience a catastrophe?
(c) What is the probability that 8 to 12 cars per year will experience a catastrophe?
