Gagalangin,Tondo to parents Juan Hernandez and Clara Vera. He studied in Gagalangin, Tondo, The Manila High School, and The American Correspondence School where he finished a Bachelor of Arts Degree. At the age of 19, he became a member of the literary society Aklatang bayan which included noted tagalog writers Lope K. Santos and Jose Corazon de Jesus. While in his teenage year, Amado began writing in tagalog for the newspaper Watawat (flag). He would later write a column for the tagalog publication pagkakaisa (unity) and become the youngest editor of mabuhay (long live) at the age of 28. Hernandez served as an intelligence officer during WWII for the resistance. After the war he served as a city councilor of Manila in 1945 and 1947. Amado became a labor leader who was known for his critisism of social injustices in the philippines and was later imprisoned for his involvement in the communist movement. In 1932, he married Atang de la Rama a filipino actress. Both of them would later be recognized as national artist. Amado V. Hernandez died on March, 24 1970 at the age of 66 due to heart attack, he was rested in the Manila North Cemetery, Manila.
