23RD HORNBILL FESTIVAL
• Hornbill Festival is celebrated at Naga Heritage Village Kisama in Nagaland.
• It is also known as the ‘Festival of Festivals’.
• It is a 10-day festival, where a visitor gets to see all the Naga tribes, their culture and
distinctiveness at one place.
FIRST-EVER TRIBAL WINTER FESTIVAL
• A first-of-its-kind Tribal Winter Festival was held in the Bandipora district of Jammu
and Kashmir.
• The festival witnessed music, dance, and cultural events that left the people enthralled
• People from the Kashmiri community, Gujjars and Bakerwals danced together to the
beat of the dhol in a unique image of cultural unity in diversity.
SWAR DHAROHAR FESTIVAL
• Ministry of Culture of India in collaboration with “Swar Dharohar Foundation,”
inaugurated a three-day “Swar Dharohar Festival”.
• It is a music, art and literary festival to showcase the iconic art and culture of India,
started in Delhi.
LUSOPHONE FESTIVAL
• Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in partnership with the Indian Council of Cultural
Relations (ICCR) and the Goa government will organize the International Lusophone
Festival in Goa.
NORTH EAST FESTIVAL
• 10th Edition of the North East Festival Begins at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New
Delhi.
• It showcases the diverse life, culture, heritage and tourism of the North East region.
• Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Narayan Rane inaugurated the MSME
exhibition at the North East Festival.
LOSAR FESTIVAL
• The Losar Festival in Ladakh is celebrated at the onset of the New Year in the
traditional schedule of Tibetan Buddhism.
• The 15 days festival is celebrated by the Buddhist Community in the Ladakh region.
• Losar is a Tibetan word that means ‘New Year.
NOWSHERA FOLK FESTIVAL
• ‘Nowshera Folk Festival’ held to boost tourism in Jammu & Kashmir’s Rajouri.
• The event was inaugurated by Deputy Commissioner Rajouri, Vikas Kundal along with
DDC Chairman Naseem Liaquat Choudhury.
• The festival, which attracted a large crowd, began with a Dogri dance followed by a
Gojri and Pahari dance by eminent artistes.

SARAS FOOD FESTIVAL 2022
• Recently, Saras Food Festival, 2022 was organized in New Delhi.
• The festival was organized to promote ethnic and homemade handicrafts, paintings,
toys etc. made by women of Self Help Groups (SHGs).
TOKHU EMONG
• Tokhu Emong, a post-harvest festival, is celebrated by the Lotha Nagas in the Indian
state of Nagaland.
• Here Tokhü means feast and Emong means the Halt on the appointed time.
AMUR FALCON FESTIVAL 2022
• Manipur Forest Authority will celebrate the 7th edition of the Amur Falcon Festival at
the Tamenglong district of Imphal.
• Amur Falcon is the world’s longest-flying migratory bird.
WANGALA FESTIVAL
• Wangala Festival is the most popular harvest festival among the Garos of Meghalaya,
India.
• It is celebrated in honour of Saljong, the sun god of fertility.
• The festival marks the end of a period of toil, which brings good harvests to the fields.
SANGAI FESTIVAL 2022
• Sangai festival is the biggest tourism festival in Manipur. The festival is named after
the state animal of Manipur.
• It was held at Sangai Ethnic Park, located at Moirang Khunou of Bishnupur district.
• The theme of the festival is the ‘festival of oneness’.
KADLEKAI PARISHE FESTIVAL
• ‘Kadlekai Parishe’ is a popular groundnut fair in Bengaluru’s Basavanagudi.
• The festival was organised in the lane opposite the famous Bull Temple of
Basavanaguri.
• During the fair, groundnut farmers from all over the state bring bags of groundnuts to
sell them at the fair.

• The Annual Youth Festival ‘Sonzal-2022’ inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Manoj
Sinha at the University of Kashmir.
• The word “Sonjal” here means rainbow, which symbolizes hope, inspiration and good
luck.

Shumang Leela Festival
• The 50th All Manipur Shumang Leela Festival 2021-2022 kicked off at Iboyaima
Shumang Leela Shanglen at Palace Compound in Imphal.
• It is a traditional form of theatre in Manipur.
• In this festival, the roles of female artists are played by all male actors and the male
characters are played by female artists in the case of female troupes.

• This is a traditional farm festival celebrated in Chhattisgarh.

• Kharchi Puja is a tribal festival celebrated in Tripura.
• The literal meaning of Kharchi is – ‘cleaning of sins’

Bonalu Festival
• Bonalu Festival is a Hindu festival where Goddess Mahakali is worshipped.
• This festival is usually celebrated during the Ashada Masam which falls in July or
August.
• The festival is mainly celebrated in Telangana’s twin cities of Hyderabad and

Festival” in Brussels, Belgium.

• The annual ancient Baikho festival, is celebrated in the month of June across the state
of Assam.
• The festival is predominately celebrated by the Rabha tribes.

Dol Utsav
• The festival Dol Utsav is mainly celebrated by the people of West Bengal.

• The festival is dedicated to Lord Krishna and Radha and celebrated on full moon day.
Maru Mahotsav
• The Maru Mahotsav is celebrated at the Pokaran village in Jaisalmer, Rajasthan.
• The renowned Maru Mahotsav is also known as Jaisalmer Desert Festival.

Medaram Jathara 2022

Losoong/Namsoong Festival
• Annually celebrated across the Indian State of Sikkim.
• Losoong festival is celebrated as Sonam Losoong, by the Sikkimese Bhutia and as
Namsoong by the Lepchas.

• The Namsoong festival begins on the 1st day of the new moon phase Kurneet Lovo.
North East Festival
• The 9th edition of the North East Festival was held in Guwahati, Assam.
• The Festival was inaugurated by Jagdish Mukhi, Governor of Assam.

• The most important festival celebrated by the Nicobarese tribe is the OSSUARY FEAST.
At this feast, the members of the family pay homage to the soul of the departed head of

• SAKEWA FESTIVAL is also known as the BHOOMI PUJA or CHANDI PUJA
(worship of mother earth). It is a religious festival celebrated by the Kirat Khambu Rai
community of Sikkim. The nine-day long festival begins on the full moon day of the Hindu
month of Baisakh which mostly falls between April and May. The celebrations mark the
beginning of the new farming year and start off on a big ground or a hilltop. The Mangpa
(male priest) or Mangma (female priest) performs puja of the soil, followed by various
other religious rituals and community feasts. The entire state comes alive during the
colourful festivities of Sakewa with the sounds of drums and cymbals reverberating in
the air.
• LOSAR also known as Tibetan New Year, is a festival in Tibetan Buddhism. The festival
is celebrated on various dates depending on the location (Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, India)
tradition. The festival is a new year's festival, celebrated on the first day of the lunisolar
Tibetan calendar. It is a significant festival in the North East Indian state of Sikkim and is
celebrated with great enthusiasm every year.
• BARAHIMIZONG is a festival observed by the Mangar Community in Sikkim. It is
celebrated as a day when the Mangar people come together to pay homage to their
forefathers and kuldevtaas by performing various religious rituals and rites. The first
Barahimizong Festival was held in 1998 with the prime objective of keeping alive, the
cultural and traditional heritage of the community.
• INDRA JATRA = This is an important harvest festival in Kathmandu Valley, also known
as YENYA (meaning "Kathmandu celebration"). Indra Jatra is a regional holiday in the
Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The holiday takes place on the 15th day of Yanla, the 11th
month in the Nepalese calendar.
• KALI PUJA or SHYAMA PUJA is conducted in temples as well as at homes, with people
worshipping the Goddess Kali on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha in the Kartik
month of the Hindu calendar. The festival, which often falls on the same day as Diwali
(Kartik Month), is considered auspicious for worshipping the goddess. Kali Puja (Kali
worship) is celebrated in states of east India especially Bengal, Odisha, Bihar, and Assam
on the new moon night (Amavasya) of the Hindu month Kartik which normally occurs in
the month of October or November every year. It is one of the biggest festivals in Bengal
along with Durga Puja.
• MAHAVIR JAYANTI = Mahavir Janma Kalyanak is one of the most important religious
festivals in Jainism. It celebrates the birth of Mahavir, the twenty-fourth and last
Tirthankara. On the Gregorian calendar, the holiday occurs either in March or April.
• DUSSEHRA = Vijayadashami is also known as Dussehra, Dasara, or Dashain. It is a major
Hindu festival celebrated at the end of Navaratri every year. It marks the end of Ramlila
and remembers God Rama's victory over Ravana. Alternatively, it marks a reverence for
one of the aspects of the goddess Devi, such as Durga or Saraswati.
• The festival of DURGA PUJA is observed to celebrate the triumph of Goddess Durga over
Mahisasur.
• HOLI is a popular ancient Hindu festival, also known as the Festival of Spring, the Festival
of Colours, or the Festival of Love. The festival celebrates the eternal and divine love of
Radha Krishna. Holi is celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Phalgun.
• SANGKEN FESTIVAL is one of the important festivals celebrated by Khamtis, one of
the oldest tribes of the Lohit District of Arunachal Prades. The festival is a Buddhist
festival celebrated with respect where Buddha is worshipped for humanity's welfare. The
celebration takes place for three consecutive days when the images of Lord Buddha are
provided with a bath ceremoniously. The festival main attraction is splashing clean water,
which is the symbol of peace and purity. Sangken Festival is celebrated in April when the
natives welcome the New Year with splendour and magnificence.
• ROTIYAAN KI EID or ROTTELA PANDUGA is an annual three-day festival held at
Bara Shaheed Dargah in Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. The annual event is observed in the
month of Muharram as the festival of 12 martyrs whose mortal remains are buried in the
compound. People visit the shrine from far-off locations. Women who visit the shrine,
exchange their rotis (flat Indian breads) at Nellore Tank (Swarnala Cheruvu) in fulfilment
of their wishes.
• BHELDIYA = This is a festival celebrated in the month of May to worship the River
Goddess by farmers, fishermen, and boatmen, whose lives and livelihoods essentially
depend on the rivers. On this occasion, the devotees accompanied by the chanting of the
names of Lord Vishnu and readings from the Bhagavata text float beautifully decorated
ritual boats made out of the peels of the Banana plants and pay their obeisance to the
rivers.
• ALI AI LIGANG = This 5-day festival associated with the commencement of agricultural
operation with the sowing of seeds is celebrated every year in the spring season
(February-March) by the members of the Mishing community with traditional songs,
dance and feast.
• BAISHAGU = This is a new year festival celebrated every year by the Bodo Kacharis in
the month of Baisakh (mid-April). The festival begins with the worship of cows on the
first day and continues with the worship of their supreme God, Bathou (identified with
Lord Shiva). Community feast and dancing on the second day before it is concluded with
a prayer at a designated place called girjasali.
• PHOOL DEI FESTIVAL is the harvest festival celebrated in Uttarakhand. Phool Dei is
an auspicious folk festival celebrated to welcome the spring season. The festival is
celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month, Chaitra. During this festival young girls
gather together and go to every house in their village/towns with plates full of rice,
jaggery, coconut, green leaves, and flowers and sing their folk songs. Additional
Information A pudding made from jaggery is the key dish of the festival. This festival
showcases the inner connection between the communities living in the hills
• SOORYA FESTIVAL, an annual cultural event organized by the Soorya Stage and Film
Society. The festival which lasts for more than a hundred days is held in
Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city of Kerala. Soorya Festival endeavours to achieve
"Integration through Culture" and aspires to propagate the rich Indian culture around the
globe. Nataraja Krishnamoorthy, popularly known as Soorya Krishnamoorthy is the
founder of the Soorya Stage and Film Society. Krishnamoorthy who was a scientist at ISRO
(Indian Space Research Organization) brought Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, into the
cultural and film map of India, through various cultural and film festivals.
• ELEPHANT FESTIVAL is one of the renowned and celebrated festivals in Mumbai. It
is held at Elephanta Island in Mumbai, right next to Elephanta Caves, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, and promotes tourism and culture. Held in the month of January, Ellora
Ajanta Dance Festival is an interface between culture and history of India. The historic
Ajanta and Ellora caves of Aurangabad are in the spotlight during the festival.
• QILA (OR KILA) RAIPUR SPORTS FESTIVAL, popularly known as the RURAL
OLYMPICS, is held annually in Qila Raipur (near Ludhiana), in Punjab, India. In around
1926 the Kila Raipur Rural Olympics was started. It is a 4-day Rural Olympics in India.
This takes place in January/February and over 4000 men and women participate in it.
The events held here are participated by teenagers, pensioners and sometimes even
horses and dogs. The event is organised in every winter in Kila Raipur.
• The KONARK DANCE FESTIVAL (ODISHA) is held at an open air auditorium in the
backdrop of the Sun Temple which is also known as the black Pagoda. The temple has
been built by black stones. The Konark temple has seven stone horses to depict the seven
horses that pull the sun’s chariot. The chariot structure has 12 massive wheels with 8
spokes each. It is known as the 'Black Pagoda' because of the dark stones used for the
temple's construction.
• The festival of 'ONAM' is associated with the 'Vamana' incarnation of the Lord Vishnu.
Vamana, 5th of the 10 incarnations (avatars) of the Hindu god Vishnu. Onam is a festival
celebrated in Kerala which is observed every year in the month of August-September. In
the Rigveda, Vishnu took three strides, with which he measured out the three worlds -
earth, heaven, and the space between them. The images of Vamana usually show him
already grown to giant size, one foot firmly planted on earth and the other lifted as if to
take a stride.
• TAJ MAHOTSAV = Held every year, between February and March, it is a ten day feast
of classical dances, folk art and light music. This grand carnival takes place in Shilpgram,
a place located very close to the Taj Mahal, Agra. Taj Mahotsav is an ode to the rich cultural
heritage of Uttar Pradesh. The festival brings back memories of the old Mughal period
and the Nawabi style prevalent in Uttar Pradesh in the 18th and 19th centuries.
• NAVROZ is New Year celebrations on March 21 every year for Parsis, followers of
Zoroastrianism, and various religions. In India, it is known as Jamshed Navroz. In India,
the Parsi community, predominant in Mumbai and Gujarat who follow Zoroastrianism,
celebrate Navroz or the Parsi New Year.
JAMSHEDI NAVROZ is a festival of Zoroastrian origin that marks the day of the vernal
equinox in March every year and is celebrated by Parsis in India. The Parsi New Year is a
regional holiday celebrated on the first day of the Zoroastrian calendar’s first month,
Farvardin. It is also known as Navroz, which is derived from ‘Nav’ and ‘Roz’, meaning new
and day respectively in Persian. The festival falls every year on Spring Equinox around
21st March. But the Parsi community in India follows the Shahenshahi calendar and thus
celebrates their new year later in July or August. In 2021, the Parsi New Year will be
observed on 16th August (Monday) in India. Hence, option 3 is correct. Additional
Information Places to Observe Parsi New Year’s Day in India: Gujarat, Maharashtra On
this day, Parsis clean the house and decorate with flowers and rangoli to make it look
beautiful and welcoming for visitors. Dressed up in traditional attire, they visit the Fire
Temple after breakfast and perform a prayer called Jashan to express gratitude to the
Lord, pray for prosperity and seek His forgiveness. Milk, water, fruits, flowers, and
sandalwood are put into the sacred fire as offerings.
FRAWARDIGAN : Frawardigan is a ten-day period at the end of the Zoroastrian
religious year during which the souls of the dead are commemorated. The name
frawardigan is a Zoroastrian Middle Persian allusion to the fravashis, which – among
other aspects – also include the souls of the dead.
KHORDAD SAL : Khordad Sal is the birth anniversary of Zoroaster. Zoroastrians all
over the world, especially the Parsis of India, celebrate the day in great glamour. Parties
and ghambars are held. Special prayers and jashan are also held throughout the entire
day.

celebrated on the eve of New Year. It comes in the month of Navroj by the Parsis.

of Ramadan or Ramzan. It occurs in the last 10 days of the holy month of Ramzan or
Ramadan and is considered as the Night of Power.
