DAY 1
EXPLORE
Electron Configuration
Elements within the same group generally have the same electron configurations in their valence
shell. Valence shell refers to the outermost energy level. Electrons in the valence shell are known as valence electrons.
Valence electron determine the position of the elements in the periodic table. Elements in the same group generally exhibit similar
chemical properties and share clear trends in properties as atomic number increases.
The period is the horizontal row in the periodic table. Elements in the same period show trends in the
atomic radius, ionization energy, electron affinity, and electronegativity.
The way in which electrons are distributed in the different orbitals around the nucleus of an atom is
called the electron configuration. Filling of electrons start from the lower energy level to highest energy level.

Activity 1 : Electron Configuration
Direction: Write the electron configuration of the following elements.
Elements Electron Configuration
ex. 11Na 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s1
1. 12Mg
2. 13Al
3. 14Si
4. 15P
5. 16S
DAY 2
LEARN
The quantum mechanical model of the atom describes the atom as having a nucleus at the center around
which the electron move. This model describes a region in space where the electron is most likely to be found.
An electron is imagined to be a cloud of negative charge having a certain geometrical shape. The electron are arranged in
principal or main energy levels that consist of one or more sublevels.
The way which electrons are distributed in the different orbitals around the nucleus of an atom is called
the electron configuration. Filling of electrons start from the lower energy level to the highest energy level.
