Skynet: once commonly associated with The Terminator, now many New Zealanders think of the Internet File Sharing amendment Bill, more commonly known as The Skynet Law. This weekend there will be protests about the amended law in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. For legal reasons we wont say what side were on. But we will say that all the demonstration protests calm protests, people will all commence at 12:00 midday Saturday at Aucklands Aotea Square, Christchurchs Ilam Fields to Hagley Park, the steps of Parliament in Wellington and The Octagon in Dunedin. All nbs welcome.
Relationship status? In love with NY/attached. Favourite drink? Coffee probably. any vices? Coffee/Grey Plume/Music. First gig played? When and where? Covers at parties in my teens! I just found a photo of one. Im wearing pretty much exactly the same thing as my buddy whos playing with me, and we both have black guitars. Uniform! Man, bet it was really bad, so not really a gig as such. My first proper show in a band was at Bodega supporting Chris Knox. He fell off the stage straddling the fold back monitors giving the audience a glance up his stubbies. He was great, we were probably awful! First gig in attendance? The first real one that made a massive impression when I was a wee lad well into OK Computer was Radiohead at Queens Wharf in Wellington. That changed everything for me. First album? Either Crowded Houses Woodface or Charles and Eddies one Whatever that was called. I was given them both for my birthday. Big thanks to whoever got me Charles and Eddie. Favourite current album? Um, today, probably Scott 4 again. Itll change often. I just got a 70s Czechoslovakian Hexploitation soundtrack called Saxana: The Girl on a Broomstick its amazing! When I grow up I wanna be? Relaxed older guy still making music with a house. First job? Making up hundreds of cardboard boxes to put files in. Putting files in those boxes. Guilty pleasures? At the moment just working in our new studio is great. Increasingly, vinyl though.

Everyones favourite darkhumoured Irishman has a new show. Its called Yeah, Yeah. Sounds like hes had enough and wants to bitch about things, which hell probably do in a very entertaining way. Somebody labelled him the Oscar Wilde of comedy which is weird, because Wilde was funny anyway and wouldnt Stephen Fry be that?
Not even the law can hold him back. Arise, Sir Luscious, your time has come. Its finally Big Bois turn to take the Auckland, nay, New Zealand scene and rip it to shreds. Hes come a long way since his first gig back in 92 with Andre head along and see just how far that is.

Alizarin Lizard have what seems like a 50-stop tour going on. In reality its about half that. But seriously, thats some impressive gigging. The band is touring in celebration of their debut EP Oh, Colour. Tonight they kick off the nationwide gig-fest with support from Idiot Prayer and Thundercub.
Steve Carell has drama acting chops. Its true. Emma Stone is the new darling of Hollywood. Also true. Julian Moore is always a hit. Pretty true. Ryan Gosling is the shit. Totally true. This new-age romcom doesnt sell itself all that well, but with such a good cast yeah, well take a chance.

Years ago, Wednesdays used to be big in Parnell. At least it was for school kids who were rebels and went out on a school night. There were those fights between school kids goading each other into stepping, one asking the other if they wanna jab?. Teenage kicks is so much better than that.
Odds are it will be a while before the ex-pats will be doing such an extensive tour in our country again, so if youre a fan of I Am Giant and in Tauranga, it couldnt hurt to check them out.
Wilberforces latest effort Vipassana has won the Auckland band some cred, and with good reason. Its a good garage sound from a good garage band, and this is Wellingtons chance to see them in action.

APRA Silver Scroll winner Lawrence Arabia takes to the stage on Friday to bang out swoon after swoon pop hit, and its hard to think of a better way to spend a Friday. Celebrating their Constellations album release, Christchurchs OLovely begin their three-stop tour in the capital this weekend. The album was released this week and the band will no doubt be strutting their stuff with this years-in-the-making effort. Most of us know him from Flight of the Concords as the not-so-wise voice of unreason to Bret and Jermaine. Arj is in the country hitting a bunch of small town spots for those that dont usually get to see international comedy.

frank kozik
It all started in Austin, Texas in the mid 80s. A young Frank Kozik was inspired by the underground punk scene that was exploding all around him. Trying not be hampered by his admitted lack of musical talent, he decided that his calling was to provide these bands with the art they needed to promote their shows. Basically all my friends were in bands, he explains, but I had zero musical talent. I could, however, cobble together little collages or illustrated Xerox flyers that became my way to contributing to our local music scene. It was sort of important to me to do something beyond just being an observer. It wasnt long before the world took notice of his unique style and perspective. By the late 90s he had made art for Pearl Jam, Green Day, Butthole Surfers, The Offspring, Sonic Youth, and even the revered Neil Young. Kozik has an unusual relationship with what he made back then and gives a typically eccentric response when asked about the old days. Ironically, the posters I just sort of banged out got to be iconic. The weirder little bands I took infinite care for, no one noticed, so personally I am proud of the very elaborate pieces for obscure bands that no one remembers! As well as being a celebrated figure in music art, Kozik was also the mastermind behind Mans Ruin Records. Over the eight years they were operational,
Mans Ruin released music for dozens of influential bands such as Melvins, Electric Wizard, Kyuss, and many more. I had done quite well from my band connections and it had led to some high paying jobs, so starting the label was a way for me to sort of pay back the scene that had given me success. I started releasing obscure or outof-favour bands I liked strictly on vinyl the first couple of years. [It was] uncensored, un-meddledwith music. The music he released included the very first Queens Of The Stone Age release (a split EP with their parent band, Kyuss), High On Fires debut The Art Of Self Defence, and the first six of Josh Hommes legendary Desert Sessions recordings. With so many great things done by Mans Ruin, we were interested in hearing who Frank Kozik was the proudest to have worked with. Electric Wizard, Church of Misery, the Queens dudes, and Turbonegro. How did he choose which bands would grace Mans Ruin? I was rather obsessed with some of them [bands on the label] and you must remember, at the time, these bands were totally uncool and could not get record deals. Later, people realised how great they were. In 1996, Kozik was tapped on the shoulder by MTV to direct a music video for Seattle rock mainstays Soundgarden. Kozik remembers this event fondly but retains his endearing candour. Technically it was fascinating.
I loved working with the crew and the band. MTV and the label people not so much. Come the turn of the millennium, Kozik tired of working in the music field and decided to venture forth. It was a period of great unrest in the world of independent music and its distribution, and that took a toll on everyone involved in it. The system shattered, he explains. It got to be weird. Plus I was like hitting 40 and a bit tired of it all, so I just walked away. Which brings us to where Kozik is today with his art
brand, Ultraviolence. With Ultraviolence, Kozik creates and releases higher end art in plastic, bronze and fiberglass. I also license out other characters for larger productions with companies such as Kid Robot, he continues. [I] do a lot of commercial design work all over the place and do a fine art show every two years somewhere. I keep quite busy! As one of the elder statesmen of the genre, what does Kozik think of poster art in the 21st century given the rise of the internet and social media? [Poster art] has had a major
resurgence as an art form. If you go to www.gigposters.com and look through the archive your mind will be blown. Ultimately, Kozik just wants to be remembered as someone who made positive things happen. Modest as he is, hes unwilling to announce his undeniable importance to the worldwide artistic community. hes KnoWn for more than that massive Palindrome and alWays rocKinG the Beatles cut. But When it comes to fame, maKinG it just isnt the toP Priority for demetri martin. By matt monK
Im really not so famous in the states and if they know my show in NZ then thats great, but Im sure I could walk around and most people wouldnt know who I am. When it comes to international stars, a lot of Kiwis figure that most Yanks or Poms we see on television have made it. Theyve got their own show thats not Shortland Street or Home And Away. Truth is, thats not really how it works. I think I dont have to have a day job thats not comedy, so if thats making it then Ive made it. Case in point, Mister Demetri Martin of Demetri Martin fame. Sure, he might seem like he knows whats what when hes telling us Important Things, but the comedian knows that Hollywood is flimsy and bigwig logic is folly. Fame is not a goal of mine. Working for a long time is. His upcoming shows in Auckland and Wellington will be his first performances in New Zealand. While familiar with the country, having toured with Bret McKenzie and Jermaine Clement overseas, hes looking forward to seeing the sights and going on his own little road trip to see what the land of the long white cloud has to offer with its scenery and people. He quips that he finds New Zealanders and our humour to be all funny and dry. Unsurprising
if your indication of Kiwis is the boys from Flight of the Concords and Rhys Darby. My impression was Id like to spend more time with people like this, he says. And spend time he shall. Martin has recently released This Is A Book. Its unsurprising that the comedian/actor has more on his mind than stand-up. There are a lot of things I want to do... write a movie, direct a film... Ive got more books coming up including drawings and short stories, and Im also writing an animated pilot for FOX. It wont be Martins first foray outside the stand-up circuit, having starred in Ang Lees Taking Woodstock back in 2009 and featuring in Steven Soderberghs upcoming Contagion. Is he trying to avoid typecasting or is acting simply the next step in the Hollywood/ comedy progression? If a great big time comedy director asked me to do something I probably would, but I cant wait around for that. If people are going to give me the jobs, great, if not, then I figure I can try to write my own parts. I like comedy, thats what I know the most about when it comes to showbiz. But Id like to do other things. Soderbergh is a great guy. If he wanted to work with me, Id do it. And Ang Lee is another very talented and smart guy, another person where I was grateful to have that opportunity. One can surmise from his stand-up alone that his mind is always on, his thoughts always connected, resulting in his jokes being always clever. His infamous 224 word palindrome If I certainly made the rounds in getting him noticed, but hes gone 226 steps further to create a 500 word palindrome in his
new book. I tell him thats pretty Mensa stuff, and ask - how the hell can you come up with that kind of content? I just jot a lot of little things down and when the time comes I try to put it all together. That one did take a long time. But for me I get satisfaction out of the challenge of doing something like this... the pursuit or activity to make me feel like Im still viable or something. I like writing jokes and I like writing movies but I think theres something validating in this. Perhaps thats the sign as to whether you know if youve made it or not that self-imposed search for validation. But as he stated before, making it isnt necessarily why Martin is in the game. Hes doing it for the love, and in it for the kicks. His short-lived but wellreceived TV show Important Things With Demetri Martin not only helped shoot his career into the limelight, but brought other comics into the foray as well. Perhaps most notably Jon Benjamin (Home Movies, Archer) who may have had cult status as that voiceover guy, but the interconnectivity behind the scenes kept the Important Things crew intact. Nathan Fielder and Dan Mintz are now both working with JB on Jon Benjamin Has A Van and Bobs Burgers respectively. Do these guys and the rest of Demetris crew count as his entourage?
Ive never got to have an entourage. Im more of my own oneman drifter show. I have friends and I really like involving them and working with them. He grows more and more likeable with each answer, and seems firmly planted in realism. Not that youd expect a comic like Demetri Martin to be an absolute prick, but the grounded views are refreshing. So what can we expect from the shows? No doubt cleverness, mind-boggling wordplay and quirky folk songs from the man who has never changed his hairstyle from the Beatles bowl cut. And what does he expect from Kiwi audiences? Well, if there will be people coming to my show that will certainly be a treat. And what if, God forbid, nobody likes him and his shows fill no seats (unlikely as another show has been added and Auckland is nearly sold out)? Either way Im going to take my time and drive around New Zealand. Rent a car and drive around a bit. Eyes peeled. There was talk of disguising himself and going into comedy bars playing the part of the quiet heckler.

as Gotye, aKa Walter de BacKer, PrePares to release his third fulllenGth record and to emBarK on a sold-out australian tour, a stranGe tWist of fate leads to this BeinG a very different article indeed... Written By james a. roBins
Its one of those freak things, where technology simply gets in your way. Such is the case for this Groove Guide writer, who on top of having a phone conversation cut short by an intrusive automatic reminder, also possesses a cellphone that often decides it would just rather not record the call... at all. Thanks, technology. Fitting then, that it should be an interview with Wally De Backer, otherwise known as Gotye, a man prone to making the most heartfelt and most heartbroken music in a circuit board-driven modern world determined to squeeze all emotive feeling out of existence. I first became aware of Gotye back in 2008 with the bombastic yearning of Hearts A Mess, taken from the acclaimed album Like Drawing Blood. Its something that sounds so organic and natural, yet the man behind remained something of an enigma outside of Australia where his talents have only recently been fully recognised. ARIA upon
ARIA has been bestowed on the very modest, well-mannered and exceptionally well-spoken Belgian-born Wally. His latest single the slow burning Somebody That I Used To Know, the kind of soaring pop song that every musician and his dog could take a leaf from, which features a few verses from fresh-faced New Zealander Kimbra is currently flying high on the Australian independent charts and on our very own George FM charts. Its taken from his brand new album Making Mirrors, recorded in his parents barn and featuring cover artwork painted by his father in the 1980s. To give some idea of his meteoric rise, the planned tour in support of the record (featuring a 10-piece orchestra, no less) sold out within half an hour. Thats U2 material there. Wally describes his own lack of memory as a starting point when making music. Theres an aspect of jealousy of his friends who are able to recall moments together when they were only three years old. So instead of recalling mirages and visions in his own head, he seeks out a sound be it the subtle twang of a nylon string guitar or the endless processing of a modular synthesizer to recreate the scene for himself. From there, the progression is natural and effortless, and yet the only note that I did take down during our now lost interview is a single word: pragmatic used to describe his own hard-nosed critique and disassembly of his songs when asked if hed ever felt pressure from outside himself to conform to a particular ideal. He flatly points out that he is
his own worst critic and most judgmental record exec at the same time, pouring scorn over his creations, tweaking and twisting until somebody actually steps in to tell him that it couldnt be more perfect if he tried. For a man set to take the world by storm (maybe not a storm, perhaps a gentle but persuasive breeze) by breaking one heart at a time, he is incredibly modest, describing his fascination with delving in to the oldest corners of sound in search of glass harmonicas and the like. Its this kind of desperation in creating something that makes Gotyes music so genuine and reverent. He says his own constantly shifting lifestyle informs when and where he pulls his influences from and he confesses that he could never record in a conventional and sterile studio for fear of eating up millions of dollars. On his own, though, he creates expansive atmospheres and delectable pop melodies from a combination of organic recording processes,
sampling and stringent MIDI editing, each harmonic turn inspiring the next. A recent short film documents his processing of an autoharp (an instrument designed for either complex sounds or singular notes), recording one string at a time purely so he could use computer software and play it like a piano. Its the bizarre and somehow fitting combination of archaic instruments and futuristic processes that make Gotye such a riveting artist to listen to and watch, and why its so ironic that a good ol-fashioned chit-chat was erased from reality by a simple technological malfunction. Oddly, its the emotion that remains. Despite our brief chat, Wallys sheer aptitude at examining his own feelings has rubbed off on me, encouraging the notion that perhaps I dont need an endless transcript to refer to, to copy and paste from. So thanks Gotye. You make melancholia sound very, very good indeed. alBum out noW MaKinG MirrorS

Friday nights showcase saw four very varied groups play a wonderfully laid back and intimate show. Each of the four groups - What Noisy Cats, Great North, Luckless, and The Body Lyre brought their own individual style to the table. What Noisy Cats hit the stage with their inventive and creative country & rock, keeping things moving to an upbeat tempo. Great North were lower key and mellow - much of their music had a very folk feel, filled with thoughtful storytelling and reminiscing that seemed to bring the room together. They even pulled the Luckless crew on stage with them to help out, adding to the atmosphere. Luckless, a two-person group, produced a delightful sound complimenting their laid-back depth and a kickass rhythm. The Body Lyre played an amazing set of synced, noisesoaked harmony. Each group showed off something special about their particular style, from simple, hummed melodies over a single guitar to skipping the vocals altogether and playing out an extended jam. The audience responded well to the sets with raucous applause for each band.

SUN 21 AUGUST
Thirsty Merc were booked to play in Auckland last month but were forced to postpone due to front man Rai Thistlethwayte coming down with a throat infection. The band promised to reschedule however, and Sunday night saw them stick to their word with a gig at Juice Bar. A good sized crowd was in the venue early to see Aucklands The Aristocrats open up the show. The band, fronted by Johnny Barker, put on an energetic performance, playing a unique brand of indie/ prog rock. After a 30-minute changeover, Thirsty Merc took to the stage to warm applause from the crowd, who quickly pushed forward and took to the dance floor. After opening with a few rocky numbers, Rai took to the piano for Tommy & Krista, which signalled a big sing-along between band and audience. Nearing the end of the set, the good people of Juice Bar took a tray of Jger shots up on stage, energising the band for a great final run of 20 Good Reasons, Mousetrap Heart and Someday Someday. After a quick breather, they returned to the stage for an impromptu song before closing with the massive hit In The Summertime. All in all a very solid show, great musicianship and a happy/enthusiastic audience, a great way to spend a Sunday night.

this is the debut full-length album from Canadian duo Imaginary Cities. Theyre getting attention (the good kind) and are about the support the Pixies on an Australian tour. The album conjures up the cold, frosty plains of their Winnipeg homeland; a sparseness echoes underneath Marti Sarbits strong vocals. She has a smoky, unhurried voice that is a great accompaniment to Rusty Matyas multi-instrumentalism. Folk guitar songs such as Whered All The Living Go sit nicely alongside the upbeat pop of Temporary Resident,
while the guitars of Dont Go sound bizarrely like The Strokes song Taken For A Fool. There are moments when Temporary Resident takes off into Gossip-like brilliance, but ultimately, this is the kind of music you want in a warm, quiet hotel bar at 4:32pm on a Sunday.

jesus, where the buggering bollocks did this come from? Out of the depths of a cynical underage Christchurch music scene wracked by earthquakes and petty inter-band squabbles comes this incredible debut from 16-year-old Sam Perry. It possesses what so many young New Zealand bands lack right from the get-go: impressive production, a sense of groove and attitude, and more importantly some fucking good songs. Beneath the dirt and scratchy guitars are proper pristine melodies and fist-pumping choruses, and perhaps most bizarrely and brilliantly, glittering synths walk hand-in-hand with raw, drum machine-driven punk not too dissimilar from many Flying Nun alumni. Seriously, hunt down this EP. Itll be free to download somewhere...
WRITTEN BY JAMES A. ROBINS
the most overrated and hated collaborate on an album thats both brilliant and flawed. Fans were practically wetting themselves in anticipation for Watch The Throne and on great tracks like Otis and Lift Off you can see why. Jay-Z is lyrically reinvigorated after competing against this generations smarmy 19-year-old rappers. Kanyes creativity is also in fine form with unique production and well-chosen guest musicians including RZA, Frank Ocean and The Dream. The duo covers multiple genres from dubstep to soul, and even prove they can outdo swag rappers on Niggas In Paris. Unfortunately the album sounds more like a collection of singles than a solid project. With so many ideas involved, tracks like H.A.M and Illest Motherfucker Alive are almost overbearing in their lack of simplicity. Luckily the great moments outshine the lousy ones and witnessing the worldwide frenzy surrounding the album is almost as fun as listening to it.
WRITTEN BY JIMMY NESS
jenny Dee And the Deelinquents hail from a town in that other hemisphere called Boston, but dont shudder with memories of More than A Feeling. Breathe. This eight-piece teamed up with producer Matt Beaudoin (Eli Paperboy Reid) to concoct a sound that rivals the best 60s foot-tapping, hip-swinging, girl-group rnb. The title track is a handclapping foreshadowing to an album that tightly weaves rhythmic surges of intensity and calm with layers of delicious hooks, bouncy bass lines, and the oh-so-flawless voice of their moniker (Jen DAngora). Track six is a sweet treat, a motownesque cover of Shake Some Action that challenges the Flamin Groovies original. The jewel is Mama Told Me, a graceful aphorism of bad love that makes the poet inside salivate and the soul groove especially when the keys break it on down. Keeping Time is soulfully fresh music, for musics sake.
WRITTEN BY JUSTIN FOWLER
Roadkill Rising is the four-disc live anthology of the venerable Iggy pop. Each disc covers a decade for a total range of 32 years of live recordings. Through those years Iggy went through one hell of a transformation, from Stooge to obscurity to solo success to cult figure, and then back to being a Stooge. The earliest disc is heavy with Stooges classics like the unstoppable Raw Power and 1969. The 80s and 90s are more focused on his breakout solo material, including the ever present Lust For Life and a wonderfully haggard rendition of China Girl. The biggest surprises come in the last disc. It features songs from his awesome but puzzling Preliminaires album that was more French jazz than rocknroll, as well as the almighty Skull Ring. This set is unlikely to win over any new fans but to his existing fanbase this is pure gold.

We3
tHrEE ISSuE HArDCoVEr
the sad story of a dog, cat and rabbit that just want to go home is essentially the basis of the miniseries WE3.
Vertigo is re-releasing the hardcover of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitelys massive 2004 hit. If youre a fan of either of their work (quick, satisfying stories with a severe touch of sadness) or you just dig dogs, cats and bunnies, this is an easy read to pick up and get into. In saying that, WE3 is a hard comic to impress upon new readers. Those familiar with Morrisons work will know his narrative often takes an anti-establishment approach, and while theres a bit of that in the subtext here, this is more a story about lost animals that want to find home. Problem is these animals have been raised as living weapons. Quitelys art is far from the norm panel layouts are not your average 3x3. He manages to mix foreground and background in a complex way that keeps you staring at the page, picking up every bit of information you can. Simply, this is the story of innocents that have been corrupted who have been given their chance at freedom. To obtain this freedom, they must overcome certain challenges challenges they usually face by initiating complete destruction with their A-grade weapons technology. Below the surface of this gory kill-fest our main characters are still animals fighting to find home. You cant help but feel for them, but this is a dog-eatdog world. The tale rides on the kinship of these animals lost in an unfamiliar world. Dont expect a completely happy ending, but for a story that winds up around 100 pages its a hard one to beat.

Hunx and His Punx crank out another video which you just know is all about rockabilly revival with a touch of John Waters. Aside from the fact the video is pretty funny in its own right, the song is one of the prettiest, catchiest throwbacks this year.
successFul alcoholics
SHort FILM
what starts off as a couple of decent sketches actually turns out to be a short film that gets lost while trying to produce its own narrative.
Well start off by saying that Successful Alcoholics has played at over 30 festivals, and despite being able to watch on Funny Or Die, its not really a comedic short film. About halfway through you start to realise that the story is changing, and out of nowhere the fantastical premise that was set up in which two alcoholics have successful social and working lives starts to change. We move from comedy to dark humour and the demise of relationships in two minutes, and it feels forced. At first glance this film could work better as a couple of sketches. But after a bit of forced dissection you can actually comprehend that there is a point to this film, absurd as it may be. The two main characters, played by Lizzy Caplan and T. J. Miller, are drunks with a difference. They are high functioning inebriates that deliver some good, solid laughs in the first 10 minutes. Past that though, the audience is basically being told another story with the same characters. Its like two different directors and two different writers were given an idea and then combine their two stories into this odd, hit-and-miss tale. Its not a bad idea for a short, but all in all the direction gets lost. Its worth a watch for Caplan if nothing else.

The new video from Wellingtons Wet Wings could be mistaken for found footage, but on closer inspection youll see its collage clips all put together magnificently in this fantastic video. Its not a groundbreaking or original idea, but the video is so appropriate to the song. Its innocence found, and its fantastic.
