John Lennons killer Mark Chapman will appear before a parole board for the seventh time this week. Chapman, now 57, was sentenced to 20 years to life in prison for shooting Lennon outside The Beatles singers New York apartment in December 1980. Chapman has applied for parole six times since 2000. At his last hearing in 2010, Chapman was denied parole by the board after it was deemed inappropriate to release him as said his disregard for human life relating to the incident was a major factor behind the decision. Lennons wife Yoko Ono has repeatedly written to authorities opposing Chapmans release.
Cabbage Patch Kids, the popular dolls from the 80s, which once had parents camping outside toy stores, are making a comeback in New Zealand. A brand new line, which reflects current fashion trends, with same unique features as their eighties predecessors is being released this week. The dolls retail for around $99.99 and are available at all good toy stores.

Aussie band Parkway Drive will return to New Zealand this December to coincide with the release of their fourth album, Atlas. The show will include with special guests I Killed The Prom Queen, Depths and Too Late. The new albums heightened ambition has led to plans for a more elaborate live show. Everything has been enhanced, says Parkway vocalist Winston McCall. For the past ten years weve played with a backdrop, and the whole experience has been us. Were trying something this time, and hopefully it makes people feel something different as well. Its definitely going to be entertaining. There wont be any dead spots.

The family of David Oh, the flight director on the recent Mars Rover mission, has changed from Earth time to Mars Time as they sync their body clocks up Mars. On every mission to Mars, a small team of scientists and engineers report to duty on Mars Time for the first three months. We all feel a little sleepy, a little jet-lagged all day long, but everyone is doing great, says Davids wife Bryn Oh. Days on Mars, known as sols, last 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer than on Earth.

Favourite drink? Coffee Latte (subject to change) Favourite restaurant/caf? Big fan of Japanese, havent found a favourite yet though. Favourite colour? Probably between purple and light blue, although not in every context. A few things would look odd in both. Favourite classic film? The Last Waltz Martin Scorsese, my favourite all-time film too. Favourite party food? I didnt know they served food at parties anymore? At the parties I go to people seem to be more concerned with consuming other things. But maybe thats just a teenager thing. Favourite vice? My terrible, terrible puns. Favourite song? I dont have an all-time favourite. I go between them. But Meadowlarks or Blueridge Mountains by Fleet Foxes are some of my current favourites. Favourite meal? Maybe a Thai Curry, or Laksa. Favourite label to put on your relationship? Assistant to the Regional Manager. Favourite 90s TV show? Funnily enough, its That 70s Show. Favourite word? Yes. Favourite album? Oh god, such a hard choice. Top 2 would be a close tie between: Alice By the Moon The Checks and Fleet Foxes Fleet Foxes Favourite venue? Definitely the Auckland Town Hall Favourite current TV show? Adventure Time.

After the success of last years Northern Bass at Haruru Falls, demand was high to repeat the gig. So organisers got on the horn to Worsfolds and scored a primo location amongst the picturesque hills of Northland, with a freshwater swimming lagoon, tons of camping and also roped in way more food outlets. And with loads of bass from the worlds finest DJs and live acts this has got to be is the best reason to blow off that dinky night in with the olds and uncles in front of the televised countdown. Remember to book early and keep an eye out for those camping store sales! Organisers FuZen Entertainment are promising a bolder, better gig on a new site at Worsfold Farm Mangawhai just one hour north of Auckland City. Back for the midnight set is the undisputed world #1 drumnbass master DJ Andy, along with his latest signing, Wilkinson. Andys dedication to dance music is only matched by his list of achievements with a journey taking him from sneaking into raves at 13 to the glamterraces of Space in Ibiza and doing speaking gigs at Oxford University. Previously on Hospital Records Wilkinson is now on Ram as drum n basss biggest breakout star for 2012. Also making the long haul from Blighty is Manc producer Dub Phizix (whose sought after guest mixes for Kmag, DnBtv, Example Magazine and Broken Audio). Hell be joined by MC Strategy. The orange will be flying high, too with Dutch crew Black Sun Empire (named after a crime syndicate from a Star Wars novel). Theyll be playing their unique brand of darkstep or neurofunk. And weve just heard that local champions Concord Dawn, State of Mind and The Upbeats
represent Aotearoa stakes for drumnbass. Northern Bass also has a fine selection of dubstep on the menu, including Mala and Coki, performing as Digital Mystics, plus generous servings from Silkie and Quest collaborators and Chestplate records honcho Distance. Another return act to watch will be Kiwis Jason Howson and Dutty Ranks And cuttin some fine hip-hop beats will be Queens NYC crewm The Beatnuts, plus JuJu and Psycho Les will be bringing their party hard attitude. But make sure you save some Red Bull for UKs hail prolific remixers The Nextmen youll need the energy boost! Producer/songwriting duo Dom Search and Brad Baloo will be mashin it up DJ Style plus locals Supervillan RMC, Dylan C and Eddie Numbers. THE ENGLISH BEAT
THE POWERSTATION

COLLAPSING CITIES
BILLY MULLIGANS
9Pm, $5, Door saLEs onLY
Acclaimed ska band The English Beat head out this way to play their first New Zealand show. Their song Mirror in the Bathroom made its way onto the soundtrack for Guy Richies (formerly the husband of Madonna) film RocknRolla and really exemplifies their sounds: a fusion of ska, punk, and a little bit of the swinging 60s.
These guys have had an intense few years. Its taken them four years to develop a new album and in that time they boosted to London, lost faith in the music industry and came home to find themselves. This time around, the process has been different, taking on a real collaborative effort with all band members and putting a shit load of their blood, sweat and tears into it.

Meet CVE a band of musical amigos hell-bent on sharing songs and making light, with a seemingly unquenchable thirst for quality wines and German shots. After eight years travelling around everywhere from Dubai to Taihape, the band present an album of original songs born on the road of good times.
Ever been to a Feelers gig? Boy are you in for a treat! Ive seen them entertain the smallest crowd to a jampacked stadium and still bring the same energy and intensity to every show. Youll know every hit, which is great, and theyll always be room to get the lighters out for their more mellow tracks.

Now confirmed on the Coro Gold bill, Sola Rosa is promising to rock your summer. But let them brighten your winter first. This outstanding live act will get you in the right funk to get you through to New Years Eve. Let their infectious summer sound wash over you.
With their debut album finally out, not to mention a clever little music video using felt characters in YouTube, The Eversons are showcasing their sounds to a home crowd. The four-piece band is super excited and you should be too! Their energy is infectious.
WHAMMY BAR
The former Bob Marley tribute band has been have Giddy Up-ed all over the world and like Sola Rosa just returned from an American tour last month. So if lighting one up and bobbing on the spot is your thing, let Katchafire warm your winter and get you Skanking all night long. Not like that.
Dont come looking for Crash Bandicoot and his lovable friends this show is a one-off with two great bands that have played for all ages across New Zealands musical landscape. Both have opened for incredible acts, Bengal Lights spawned us Zowie before she got all famous and stuff, and both continue to rock out in their own rights.

NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM
WAIRARAPA MUSEUM OF ART AND HISTORY
masTErTon 7Pm, $25-30, araToi.orG.nz
Not to be confused with that shitty Ben Stiller movie, this is a night of culture. Up With People presents a series of live music events, launching with a night of country musics finest: Barry Saunders, Delaney Davidson & Marlon Williams, and Miss Ebony Lamb. Its set to be nights of concerts and club-nights designed to showcase up-and-coming artists and get the people of the Wairarapa out of the house.
Thought is sounds like some kind of gross infection, its actually a mind-blowing gig set to rock all your sense. Sound and light installation artist Wang Fujui is the pioneer of experimental music and digital art all the way from Taiwan. Its a fusion of both senses to create the ultimate trip. Backed up by a number of Kiwi artists, no doubt itll leave you wanting more.
Let Eli Guttenbiels guitar gently weep as he sends you into a lazy afternoon sleeping coma from which you awake in time for work on Monday. Its been a hard week and you deserve a break, so why not just chill the hell out to some sweet sounds?
After being diagnosed in August last year with an aggressive brain tumour, DJ Classic Daddy braved months of operations, chemotherapy and medication to eventually be given six months to live. In honour to him and as his work, friends and fellow DJs have donated their time to put on this gig to create his vision for RnB Rise. All proceeds got to the Cancer Society.
AUCKLAND HAMILTON
I first saw the diminutive 22-year-old soul diva Iva Lamkum onstage during a warm and balmy Sunday session at WOMAD (World of Music Arts and Dance) about two years ago, wowing the crowd with the brilliant single Kung Fu Grip. Back in her Wellington hometown, soul believers have followed her from her selftitled debut EP, which frontloads six very well-polished tracks that came seemingly out of nowhere. Plus you may have also caught her on Sola Rosas Turn Around where she approximated the funkiest Billie Holiday youll ever know! Its about time a big label has taken charge because Black Eagle is one hot musical origami of hip-hop, reggae, jazz, funk and rock yet the title track is sultry and contemplative, held together by a simple chord ascension and some deliciously underdone VBs by Rio Hemopo. Also lurking is Mara TK and vocalists Bella Kalolo and Aaradhna, who create some absolute goosebump moments on the first verses of Come Back Enemy. Opening the album is the commanding and masterful No, recycled from the previous
EP. That single was pretty impressive back then, but now it has the crispness of some high-end musicianship and a quality production desk. The song reprises in a similar guise as Raise Your Glass (Way Back) a few tracks down. A nice surprise is the very Motown hip-hop track Doo Bop that sneaks up towards the end of the record. But my personal favourite is Bankrupt Visa, which is a skanky lil reggae-travel groove that surprisingly breaks into some very sophisticated deep dub midjourney. All over, this is a very strong product from a lady whos been under the radar way too long. People this is Iva Lamkum. Applaud now!

Linklaters true triumph, however, is in the way he flawlessly integrates the real-life testimonials of the townsfolk into the narrative. There is a unique collective personality to the small Texan community, one that is vital to understanding the unusual position Tiede is placed in. The towns charm is impossible to replicate and watching it being expressed naturally through Carthages residents is an absolute joy. Thats not to discredit the fiction at all. Bernie is a superbly written and lovingly told account of a quirky slice of American crime history, with a tender bittersweet ending. Whats great about Nuffield St. is it has a little bit of that Wellingtonstyle quirkiness in its design, but its located in the heart of Newmarket. Recently undergoing a few nips and tucks like any older lady, the place is looking swanky with an interior decorating style all of its own, guaranteed to make you feel at home. Nuffield is Aucklands finest boutique shopping street so it seems only fitting that the brew bar fits in. With a range of craft beers and the full range of Macs, its the best way to spend a post-shopping wind-down. They cater for large groups to dinner for two, and have an extensive range of live, local music. Nuff said.

Groove GuideS LAURA WEASER DECiPHERS ANiMAL CoLLECTivE JoSH DiBBS MUSiCAL WAYS AND GET To THE BoTToM oF THERE MUCH ANTiCiPATED NEW ALBUM Centipede Hertz.
How do you keep experimental music experimental after 13 years and over eight albums? That was the challenge for Baltimore psychedelic rock act Animal Collective. In a time of robots having sex and Lady Gaga wearing a meat dress, it seems perhaps the modern age has lost its experimental edge. But according to founding member Josh dibb, for them its not about keeping it experimental so much, but as much as it is keeping it Animal Collective, and on the new record Centipede Hz (or Centipede Hertz) they have tried to do just that. I think I like the idea that people listening to it, over time, will be challenged in all these different ways, in terms of what they are listening to, but they will still be able to hear the unifying-ness of it and that its distinctly Animal Collective. But I also feel like at the same time I think what keeps us psyched about making music is that we do keep trying to change the landscape of how we are making music and what types of sounds that we are using or what types of approaches to songwriting or structure. Beginning in the early 1990s as a bunch of childhood friends, Avey Tare (david Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), deakin (Josh dibb), and Geologist (Brian weitz) began in indie bands and alternative rock groups in their county, living in a bubble separated from the Baltimore music scene. with a love of other psychedelic acts at the time, such as Noggin, and Krautrock (a German experimental music scene in the 1960s), the boys began to record at home using a drum machine, guitars, delay pedals and them screaming into a microphone, before swapping and sharing ideas between them. despite heading off in different directions, the group met every summer and their debut album Spirit Theyve gone, Spirit Theyve Vanished, was born. The line up of the band has never been uniform when recording or playing, always keeping the ideas and combinations fresh. Josh says its a real balancing act to keep their mantra of what they set out to do in the first place: create a band that does not feel like something is wrong if one or two of us do no feel like being involved.
Example a: Joshs favourite album, Merriweather Post Pavilion (2008) took form without him and Centipede is the first record that he has had his own song on. So has being here this time shaped the album pushed it into a particular direction? I think that was just a new thing for the band to try to work on one of my songs, he says. But I do not really know what I could say about it beyond that. I think something I was psyched on in doing another record and I think we all were, I do not think I can really take credit for it, but it was just make a record that felt more physical, raw and visceral than the last one was. Centipede is their first album in two years since their last, ODDSAC. on this album, extensive time was spent writing new songs together as a group and recording songs during their tour of festivals in the uK and uSA. one of the ways Animal Collective have sought to shake things up on this album is by significantly reducing the number of instruments used on Centipede Hz, yet giving the illusion that there are more. The juxtaposition of the minimalist instrumentation with the tracks rich sound worked to create an effect fans have dubbed a reflection of the experience of living in modern age something that Josh acknowledges was in the back of their mind. we definitely didnt talk about it when we were writing it, but I think having heard from people now, it is pretty easy to be like, yeah, that probably makes sense in terms of giving a feeling of century overload. I feel [overwhelmed by the modern age] especially around really simple things, like having so much media at our disposal all the time. I had actually forgotten that iPhones just came out in 2007. It is really new. The Internet for sure, but then beyond that the accessibility to it and the ways we are just getting this constant onslaught. I think that that probably is reflected in the album. THE ToPP TWiNS FiRST CHRiSTCHURCH PERFoRMNACE SiNCE THE QUAKES ARE SURE To HAvE CANTABRiANS HEADiNG oUT iN DRovES. ITS HArd To imagine a time when The Topp Twins werent a part of Kiwi culture. The loveable comedy duo sisters Lynda and Jools Topp have been performing as their electric mix of characters for over 25 years. But back in the 1980s, their very first paid gig was at a small caf in Christchurch for a measly $5. we started our career off in Christchurch, says Lynda. Its not quite home, but it feels like coming home every now and again. we started singing at a caf called The Victorian Coffee Lounge, which no longer exists. we got $5. we shared the $5 and got as many toasted sandwiches as we could eat! Needless to say, these days things are a little bit different. For one, there is no way you could even get one toasted sandwich for $5. But more importantly, Lynda and Jools are in high-demand at everything from high teas to A & P shows. They are fully booked right up until Christmas and as it is, finding time to pin them down for a chat is next to impossible. Ive got five minutes while Lynda takes a break from performing. Going back to where it all began, Christchurch holds a special place in the Huntly-born performers heart. when Lynda and Jools return to play with the Christchurch Symphony orchestra for a country meets the classics show, its their first appearance in their other hometown since the big earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011. we know that its been hard times for a lot of people and hope that for one night we can bring a little bit of humour and entertainment to the folks of Christchurch, says Lynda. All the characters get to play with the symphony orchestra. Camp Mother and Camp Leader are very excited, and Pure and dilly, who are self-appointed patrons of the symphony around the world (laughs), and of course the Topp Twins as themselves and Ken and Ken. Its going to be really exciting. The Topp Twins love for Christchurch is no one way street either: Cantabrians clearly go the extra mile for their shows. As Lynda says, they have had an amazing run with New Zealand audiences time and time again, but the Christchurch shows are always the fastest to sell out. But Christchurch might have a fight on its hands with Huntly, where the girls spent their childhood growing up on a dairy farm. To honour the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame inductees, the small waikato township decided to show their appreciate in other ways: by opening a museum exhibit of all things Topp Twins. It was very exciting to see our own exhibit. Normally people wait until you are dead, so it was exciting to be alive to see it, laughs Lynda. Lots of people came out of the woodwork and had amazing things: pictures of us as children, teenagers, newspaper clippings and big tour posters they had saved. we also gave them a few things of our own, like costumes and memorabilia from over the years. There were about 30 rooms. It was wonderful to see at the opening. The universal appeal of The Topp Twins and their characters particularly Lyndas favourite Camp Mother and Camp Leader is no secret: Because its funny, exclaims Lynda with a laugh. were honest and we can sing. The thing is, when you come to the show you get everything: music, laughter, costumes, audience participation, yodeling. I think this is the first time ever that yodeling has been used with symphony orchestra.

apparently, just about every one of you out there desperately wants a Star Wars game where you play as a cool, ruthless bounty hunter. 1313 derives its title from where the game is set: on the one thousand, three hundred and thirteenth level below the surface level of capital planet Coruscant. You play the role of a young bounty hunter, who is tasked with delivering a nasty creature in a cage to this far-off level. Naturally, things immediately go wrong and you plummet downwards in a very quick manner. First thought? This game is beautiful. Like, next-gen beautiful. It was running on a custombuilt PC and no other platforms have been announced at this time. All of this adds up, in my speculative mind, to a release on the next Xbox and PlayStation. Second thought? Its Uncharted! With a dash of Blade Runner! Seriously, in the absolutely tiny amount of gameplay I saw, this is Nathan Drake as a bounty hunter. Youve got gunplay, melee attacks and a hell of a lot of cover options. And then there are seamless transitions into quicktime events, computer-controlled death-defying leaps and breathtaking set pieces. Coruscants level 1313 is a seedy place, populated with characters who apparently have more shades of grey than were used to seeing in the Star Wars universe. Thats where the Blade Runner comparisons come in: it had a very similar vibe to its dirty, dark, neon-lit streets. Again, not a bad thing if they can pull that tone off well.

What are you working on right now? The thing taking up the most space in my room right now is a 60s Hammond organ, which Im attempting to modify at the moment. Its not going well, but theres a very supportive Hammond enthusiast in Christchurch who emails me as though I can do it. Ive been working on sounds and parts for the Artisan Guns album launch, weve got a few songs on the album which needed some problem solving to play live. Who was an inspiration or idol to you growing up? James dansey from The Sneaks and Jack white. How do they think? Also, Thomas The Tank Engine taught me how to live. When you were a kid what was your dream job? Computer teacher. Now Im not sure whether tomorrows kids will need computer teachers, I think the technology will be moving too fast for it. Kids will be schooling the school, and their teachers will be their younger siblings and so on and so fourth, until the world leaders in the tech field are just 10 years old. Whats your favourite venue in the country? There are so many good ones, and so many more to see! wine Cellar is where I feel most at home. rohan is one of the Auckland undergrounds guardian angels. I loved playing at The National in dunedin, which is a town full of people who do amazing things on a wing and a prayer. What has been the best show youve attended this year? Phwooar, thats hard one. Lawrence Arabia at the wellington opera House. Such a huge achievement to do a national Town Hall tour and take a full band and string players and to perform one of the years most lush, yet fiendishly tricky albums. What show are you most anticipating this year? I think The Cosbys are working on an album. If they play a launch show, it will be unmissable. Matthew Crawley is the only person Ive yet seen, who can literally bring the whammy Bar audience to their knees, using the power of soul-pastiche song.
Whats your guilty pleasure? Ive been playing the Home Brew album so many times that its reaching guilty pleasure status Im trying to work out something Im into that hasnt been appropriated by hipsters and made cool; I guess its a generational thing. The costumes from Home Alone are getting cool again. One piece of advice youve never forgotten All girls are crazy; youve just got to find the one whose special kind of crazy is one you can be with. After being practically married to three other dudes in a band, I want to say its the same for boys. A very wise piece of advice for musicians is to always load out on the night you play. Somehow that 30kg bass amp is much more manageable at 1am when youve been drinking, than at 9am when youre horribly hung over. The biggest success youve had is Captaining the Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club one-day B team to our only win of the season, against the top-of-the-table team. our regular captain opened, scored 49 runs in about 3 balls, then went home sick and left me to mop up our spilled hopes. I very nearly dropped a crucial catch, but after juggling it a couple times I finally grasped it firmly between my wrist and my thigh, unconventional maybe, but brilliant. I went on to captain the team to about half a dozen successive losses, and was involved in an umpiring scandal. The short story is that I used an antiquated rule to no ball a rude bowler from waitakere, he got me back by winning the match. New Zealand audiences are More engaged than they look, crossed arms seem to mean yea man, I could really dance to this music. Almost everyone leaves saying Ah, those bands were better than I expected.
