For their frst New Zealand tour in 10 years, who is to
say Garbage is a has-been? If their latest tour will be
anything like the last, they will show why they are a
premium live band. Shirleys a bit old and perhaps a
bit wiser, but shes still got her Scottish bite.
The god of nu metal-turned-indie alternative-turned
awesome again are back. They were so amazing in
their 2007 sold-out show that Linkin Park decided
to come our way again on their LivingThings
tour. Although Chester joked it would be the band
reenacting their music videos with puppets, we
promise that wont happen.
Possibly one of the greatest 80s rock icons ever
(depending how you look at it), Pat is joined by
fellow performers Neil Giraldo, giants of rock n roll
Bachman & Tuner and America. Pats a four time
Grammy winner and more importantly, she sung the
karaoke classic Love Is a Battlefeld.
Exploding onto our airwaves with that one massive
hit, the talented twosome are quickly capitalising on
the success by doing a tour. What? Its true. But that
doesnt make it any less cool to see them coming
here. Get your Thrift Shop gears on, particularly your
onesies, and get down to the sounds of fresh hip-hop.
Sadly the last remaining brother of the iconic disco-
funk-smooth talking Bee Gees, Barry Gibb puts on a
special tribute concert to his fallen comrades. Joined by
the legendary Carole King, its sure to be an emotional
tribute as he runs through classics such as Stayin Alive
(Ooo, poor choice?) Its a must for all Bee Gees lovers.
Cat Power has announced she is to return for two
shows in February. Chan Marshall, released critically
acclaimed album Sun in September the frst of
original material sinceTheGreatestin 2006. Recovering
from a diffcult time in recent years, including a spat of
illness, shes back and the claws are out.
This staple summer show has become an iconic
event since its inception seven years ago. This years
headline act is Fat Freddys Drop, joined by the
sensational Anika (Moa), Boh (Runga) & Hollie (Smith)
collaboration, and to top it off is The Adults, featuring
Jon Toogood, Julia Deans and Shayne Carter.

So Post Modern EP Release Tour
Spazzy noice musicians Hollywoodfun Downstairs
are on tour for the release of their debut EP So Post
Modern. It has been something the team have worked
towards for awhile and the nationwide roadie is
preparing the group for their album recording in
March with James Goldsmith and Mike Gibson.
This stellar event pairs the spectacular Wellington
International Ukulele Orchestra with the best ukulele
soloist in the world James Hill in a summer double

Last June, a guy called Blood Orange
(Dev Hynes) opened for Florence
+ The Machine at Vector Arena.
Frankly, he blew my mind. I have been
on the lookout ever since for his work
to make it to New Zealand. At last it
is here and is complimented by the
beautiful sound that is Solange.
In True, Hynes creates rich house
beats with just the right amount of
complexity; while Solanges lovely
voice drifts amongst it. The two
artists meld perfectly together and
have created something that crosses
genres from dance to pop to soul.
In the past, Solanges music has
refected her sister Beyonces work
in a way that can only lead to harsh
comparisons. Her music was never as
good and as popular. Then, Solange
did the best thing she could have
done and went independent, signing
with Chris Taylors (Grizzly Bear)
label Terrible Records (Twin Shadow,
Grizzly Bear, Blood Orange, Arthur
Russell).
True sees Solange come into her own
as she has found a style that suits her
vocal capability, sounding natural
and effortless. Lyrically the album
has a very unique tone, foating
between upbeat and sombre. Solange
describes the album, as a dance
record, but the lyrics can get pretty
dark at times.
Trueis different to anything I
have heard in quite a while, and it
absolutely removes Solange from
comparison with her sister. The
opening track Losing You sets the
mood for the whole album. Hynes
plays around with an Afro drumbeat,
mixed with new wave synth
sounds. There is just enough funk
to set it apart from the dance tracks
plaguing the airwaves right now. The
video is well worth a watch too.
Lovers in the Parking Lot is one of
the best tracks on the record. The
strong drumbeat is joined by tinkling
keys as Solanges voice futters over
the top in the chorus, hitting her
high notes with absolute perfection.
The album as a whole is like no
other. It sounds like all the good
bits of Madonna in the 1980s, while
also refecting the non-pretentious
parts of the modern indie electronic
scene. Her collaboration with Blood
Orange is a fawless move into a new
direction while also staying true to
her soul roots.
WRITTEN BY ZOE FITZPATRICK
I dont think fans ever did stop believing that these
guys would come to our shores but as a double bill
with Deep Purple?! No shiz, these guys have both been
performing since the 1970s, so just the fact that they
are able to get on the plane is a big deal.
Enjoy the smooth jazz vocals of Briar Ross with her
trio performing classics in the style of Billie Holiday
and Diana Krall. Briar lives on Waiheke Island, where
she performs regularly and organises jazz events at
vineyards over Labour Weeekend and Easter.
Join like-minded individuals with refned tastes
in high-quality old-school music. This is a vinyl
appreciation society! Join the whole team Murry
Sweetpants, Dustin (Conch) and Paul Geraets as you
too share an understanding of why vinyl is superior to
digital. Its like a fne wine that gets better with time.
Oh, and dont forget $12 pizzas.
They broke up in 1996, but are playing their frst show
on Kiwi soil at Vector Arena. The UK band, led by Ian
Brown, released their debut in 1989 and has been
non-stop until their split 17 years ago. Changing the
sound of British pop in the early 1990s, their work was
considered some of the greatest in history.
Dont miss this unique chance to hear touring Chinese
folk rock band Omnipotent Youth Society. Touted as
the next big thing in Chinese rock music, OYS has won
a raft of awards. Their unique music incorporates
violins, trumpets and harmonicas in their mix for a
sound described as poetic, powerful and haunting.

According to the swinging Sal Valentine hes
ballsdeep in excitement to be playing in Aotea
Square. Like an old-time jazz crooner, hes full of
class and style, with a wink and a nudge here and
there. Joined by Aucklands number-one band, The
Babyshakes, picking their fghts wisely, you can bet
your bottom dollar itll be a show to remember.
Youve seen the iconic Tarantino fick, now see it as
the creators of Thunderbirds would have intended
with puppets. The award-winning hit of the
Wellington Fringe features James Nokise, Anya Tate-
Manning and more Jon Coddington. Its the ultimate
strings attached situation, where everything and
anything goes.
Winner of eight Tony Awards, including Best
Musical, SpringAwakening is a rock musical all about
the defowering and blooming of relationships. It is
about celebrating the journey that is coming-of-age.
The inner and outer tumult of sexuality with a power,
poignancy, and passion that is never forgotten.
SnakeThePlanet by MPU takes the classic game
Snake and adapts it to the urban canvas. Projected
onto buildings, each level is generated individually
and based on the selected facade. Aucklands
windows, doorframes, pipes and signs all become
boundaries and obstacles in the game. Shapes and
pixels collide with these boundaries like real objects.
You know its going to be good when there is a warning
that a show contains smoke effects and strobe lighting.
Celery Productions and The Basement are joining
their juggernaut creative forces to get audiences out

When a director makes a flm
starring his missus and children
thats about a diffcult period in an
already tempestuous relationship,
one cant help but read a massive
autobiographical element into it.
As with FunnyPeopleJudd Apatow
seems to be telling a deeply personal
story here, but where that prior flm
pulled back the curtains on the world
of comedy and fame, ThisIs40sees
Apatow mistaking his personal life
as the perfect fodder for another
dramedy that stretches beyond a
comfortable running time.
While they didnt interfere with my
enjoyment of the flm, ThisIs40s
dramatic elements are bound to
prove its most divisive quality, with
Paul Rudd and Leslie Manns self-
centered bickering making it diffcult
to root for them as individuals or
become invested in their future
as a couple. Presumably Apatows
trying to convey either some unique
insights or universal truths about
relationships here, but he mostly
depicts a couple of well-to-do
selfsh assholes grumbling about
their pretty good lives.
Much of the flms humour stems
from Rudd and Manns hurling of
insults at one another, so seeing
beyond Apatows self-indulgence
in recreating marital feuding is
critical to enjoying ThisIs40s
comedic aspects. Luckily the
leads share strong chemistry and
an enthusiasm for the material,
with Rudd demonstrating his
usual outstanding comic timing
and relish for improvisation and
Mann showing off similar skills.
The strong supporting cast also
excels and the flm delivers plenty
of laugh out loud moments if
you can get past its uninspiring
depiction of domestic strife.

It is well and truly award season this summer, and
after the glittering gossip-flled display that is the
Grammys, Britain retaliates with their (potentially)
classier display, namely TheBritAwards. The
ceremony features live performances from Robbie
Williams, One Direction, Muse, Emeli Sande and
Mumford and Sons.
Love him or hate him, Russell Crowe spells Oscar
pulling power. Academy Award-winner for Best
Picture, ABeautifulMind is a towering achievement
based on the life of Nobel Prize-winning scientist John
Forbes Nash Jr, as he struggles between brilliance and
schizophrenia. Jennifer Connelly also won an Oscar
for her portrayal of Nashs devoted yet troubled wife.
Raw, heart wrenching and, well, unashamed in its
portrayal of Brandon. Hes a rich, well-to-do man who
struggles with sexual addiction, which ranges from
masturbation, one night stands and hookers to wild
threesomes. When his somewhat needy sister Cissy
arrives unannounced for an indefnite stay at his
New York apartment, his routine is disrupted and her
needs impinge.
Each January, the entertainment community and
flm fans around the world turn their attention to the
Academy Awards. Movie lovers tune in to watch the
glamorous ceremony and learn who will receive the
highest honours in flmmaking. Seth MacFarlane will
host for the frst time.
This brand new series sees Christina Applegate and
Will Arnett star as Regan and Chris, the proud new
parents of baby Amy. But the unplanned surprised
infers with a career that needs attention the pair
decides Regans the one going back to work while
Chris is going to be the stay-at-home dad.
Benjamin (Brad Pitt) is abandoned as a baby on the
steps of an old folks home. Although he is a baby,
Ben has the appearance and physical maladies of
an elderly man. Things become further complicated
as he falls in love with Daisy. As he grows younger
and she ages, their love becomes complicated and
increasingly challenged.

Come for a quiet, come for a party. Di Lussos a cosy
corner, oozing a true Dunedin feel through the brick
work with a pinch here and there of Wellington-style
hipsterness. Chandeliers, deer heads on the wall its
a fne establishment with top quality drinks to match
particularly their cocktails.
With top-tapping much from the 60s to 80s, this is
your place to be for a pre-dinner drink, a midweek
cocktail before a concert, after work drinks with
business associates or dancing the night away at the
weekend. Its fun and fresh much like its namesake.

comes to comfortable, classy armchairs to recline in. Low light is
provided by green shaded lamps, giving it the ambience. An open
fre crackles in the corner and the staff wear natty waistcoats and

The lasT Time Us rockers linkin Park set foot in New Zealand on
their 2007 tour, lead singer Chester Bennington was almost arrested for
bioterrorism with a pair of muddy golf shoes.
apparently they werent clean enough, and i didnt think my golf shoes
were something i needed to declare, he says with a laugh. it would have
been my biting the head off a bat moment.
But despite his run-in with the law, Bennington is clearly bursting with
energy and excitement for the bands forthcoming arrival in the country
and not just because he wants to get out on the golf course on a day when
the fags are standing up, after a few disastrous rounds in a howling gale
last time.
a lot has changed in six years and it has been a period of signifcant
growth for the bands sound.
The two massive sold-out shows in 2007 were on the back of their album
Minutes to Midnight their frst album since Meteora in 2003. While it was
still heavy with all the elements that made linkin Park who they were
mike shinodas lyrically-innovative raps, seven-string guitars and a bit of
scratching it was the frst step towards change.
and what followed was A Thousand Suns in 2010, a radical departure from
anything the band had done before. Tied around a central theme of socio-
political unrest, it was layered with instrumental interludes, samples from
historical speeches and there wasnt a single scratch in sight.
With incredible commercial success they had found with their iconic
sound including the diamond-certifed debut album Hybrid Theory it
was a risky move for a band who had, until now, built their reputation on
the nu-metal genre tag.
We talked about it quite often, he says of the risks involved. We were
like, Okay, we could really be chopping our own head off here. But we de-
cided it was worth it, to make a record we were happy with that was truly
representative of the band and where we wanted to go.
admitting it polarised the bands fan base, Bennington says the boys
felt confdent going into the recording studio with producer Rick
Rubin, who agreed to come on board so long as the band didnt make a
linkin Park record.
We could make whatever we wanted there were no rules. That was the
only rule. and that opened the door to going in and going way out. We
kind of went into orbit and it was fun.
When asked if their latest record, Living Things, is the band coming back
down to earth, Chester lets out a laugh and says, kind of, before adding
that we like the idea of being in outer space, we want to live there, but we
want to take a piece of home with us.
That epitomises the sound of the record a mix of conceptual sounds and
classic linkin Park elements, Living Things was the record that left the
band feeling comfortable in their own skin.
For so long we were in the frame of mind that we were always pushing
forward and moving away from what came before and that idea only
works for so long until you cant do that anymore, says.
it would be a mistake to think these creative decisions were something
the band took lightly. Bennington describes them as the kind of band that
writes a chorus 70 different times until we get one everyone likes and if
they dont like it, we go back and write it again. On a good day, a rewrite
is lower than 60 times lyrically and less than 30 musically. although cre-
atively exhausting, thats why there is more than one driving force to turn
to when it comes to crafting a hit record.
im fortunate enough to work with mike [shinoda], Bennington admits.
im not discrediting the contribution of any of the other band members,
but, you know, i feel like mike is truly one of the most prolifc artists of our
time he is unstoppable. he writes and writes, and everything he does is
good. it can be intimidating, but for me its invigorating.
Talking about the bands upcoming return to auckland this Thursday,
Chester jokes the bands show will consist of 25 minutes of puppeteering
our music videos to a backing track. But in all seriousness, he says the
show is frmly grounded in what the fans want to hear no going out to
space this time.
Were a pretty straightforward rock act. We are basically playing almost
everything we think people wanna hear. it will be a fun show and we look
forward to it.

By rights, any game based on the Alien movies
should be all kinds of awesome (literally, every
kind). Over the years, though, the execution of
games based on the gun-laden, corridor-flled,
terror-packed franchise has been spotty. Sure,
there have been great games with Gigers
monsters in them, but more often the titles that
bear the Alien name have been... sub-optimal,
shall we say.
Unfortunately, Colonial Marines falls into that
undesirable second category.
To start with, the opening cinematic features
unimaginative camera angles, clunky character
animations, overlapping lip-syncing and an
uninspired script to match. While an attempt to
capture the aesthetic style of an Alien flm was
present, all of the polish and class was completely
absent. It was more Starship Troopers (the direct-
to-DVD sequels) than the brooding atmosphere
of Aliens.
Things improve slightly when given control in the
game, but only very slightly. There are occasional
glimpses of the greatness that could have been.
The love and explicit attention to detail that
Gearbox and TimeGate Studios have poured into
the games environments is stunning.
But the problems lie with everything knocking
around in this beautifully realised world. The
character animation, both for the human marines
and the aliens, is extremely disappointing. The
aliens locomotion certainly makes them alien-
like, but unfortunately, its more of the drunken ET
variety, than that of a nimble double-jawed killing
machine. In a nutshell, xeno encounters in this
game are just not scary.
The multiplayer might be the saving grace of
Aliens: Colonial Marines, but its still not without
its faults. It still looks incredibly awkward to
anyone watching aliens quite often snap to
walls or ceilings and often appear to be running
at you sideways. Its the best part of the package,
but that alone doesnt make it good nothing
does, particularly.
Its a shame that a title seven years in the
making could result in something so lacklustre,
but it appears that the elongated, stop-
start development ultimately resulted in an
inconsistent and disappointing fnal result. Its
a double-miss for Gearbox after the awful Duke
Nukem Forever. Aliens: Colonial Marines might be
best jettisoned into space alongside it.

point wearing clothes that feel or make you feel
uncomfortable as it shows.

what music/celebrity has style up the wazoo?
Steven Tyler, of course. Famous for his

many necklaces he has on at one time!

Leggings. They are not pants. It is not appealing to
wear them as jeans with crop tops.

Maxi dresses. They are the best and the easiest
way to look feminine and summer ready. Last
time we checked, dip dye prints and silk overlay
are still in fashion.

cant walk into a store without those two colours.
Patterns are usually geometric plus foral for

TheRes PleNTy We know about Chan marshall (aka Cat Power).
shes been the darling of the alt-music scene for a while now. a bit of a
poster child for individualism and creativity, and self-deprecation too.
shes been the party babe, her fragility and that eternal teetering on
the precipice between commercial and independent success. Theyve
always been part of the appeal and the mystique. she does well to mix
her feminine allure with an aloof ethereal quality. in many ways, shes a
sort of stevie Nicks for the Naughties.
and what a voice: soulful, detached, drifting but very potent. after six
years of quiet shes returned with her entirely solo product, sun. Unlike
2006s The Greatest, with the full southern memphis treatment, Sun is
all about 80s synths, keys, beats, guitar and vocal layering. many of the
songs are tethered to disco, electronica and new romanticism. Ruin is
pretty catchy. it has this nifty oscillating piano motif while Cherokee,
which opens the album, has a rootsy propellant behind it.
There has been a few ups and downs while touring the new album,
Turns out ive had angioedema since i was a kid and i didnt know, so i
had to cancel europe because i had to keep going to hospital - my throat
would swell, and i couldnt breathe. i didnt want to be weak, i wanted to
do my job, but i couldnt.
its a shame dates have had to be cancelled, because Sun has been a
triumphant return for Power and she shouldve been able to celebrate.
her frst album of original material in six years, its her highest-charting
album in the United states so far, opening at #10, and has recently earned
her a Brit award nomination.
Of course, none of this might have happened if it wasnt from a mate
who thought it sounded too much like the old Cat Power. Naturally,
this was upsetting yet inspirational. Deciding to focus on her home
situation (she was living with actor Giovanni Ribisi and his daughter at
that point) marshall didnt go near a studio for over seven months. shed
told reporters later that the feeling was very rejected. shed been writing
songs forever, so looking for a new way to approach her work was a real
challenge. and that fnally kicked in. she sat at a piano. While she had
her usual guitars, the cases were never opened. instead the adventure
was about experimenting with different synths and keyboards, brushing
off the dust, plugging in the foppies and bashing out some tunes.
Returning from mexico to a rented a house in malibu for nine months
she invested heavily in building her own studio. she recruited her old Cat
Power band mates in (Judah Bauer of the Jon spencer Blues explosion,
and Jim White of The Dirty Three among them), and jammed up
some songs live. yet despite all the work it just didnt gel, it wasnt the
sounds in her head and in the end got scrapped. instead she headed
to Paris to work with producer Philippe Zdar, who presided over
mixing duties, whilst she squirreled away on new material and at a full
gestation, nine months later, Sun was born.
marshall is now bringing her new sound and album to New Zealand. she
has been touring the world with a new band since late 2012, and we look
forward to welcoming her back to our side of the world!
