The Annunciation.
Narrator: In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth,
to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, from the house of David, and the virgin’s name is Mary.
And coming to her he said:
Narrator: But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might
be. Then the angel said to her:
Angel Gabriel: Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold, you will conceive in
your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the
Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house
of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.
Mary: How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?
Angel Gabriel: The holy spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you.
Therefore, the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative,
has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for
nothing will be impossible for God.
Mary: Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.
The Visitation.
Narrator: In those days, Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country, to a town in Judah, and
she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of
Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
Elizabeth: Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted
to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the of your greeting came to
my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. And blessed is she who believed that there would be a
fulfillment of what was spoken to her from the Lord.
Mary: My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord and my spirit exults in
God my savior; because he has looked upon his lowly handmaid. Yes, from this day forward all
generations will call me blessed, for the Almighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name, and his
mercy reaches from age to
age for those who fear him.
Narrator: And Mary remained with her about three months and returned to her home.
Narrator: Joseph the carpenter is hard at work on a project when his fiancée Mary comes in to see him.
Mary: An angel of the Lord came to me. He said I was going to have a child and—I don’t know how to say
this—the child would be the Son of God.
Mary: The Holy Spirit came upon me. Joseph, I’m pregnant.
Joseph: [In shock] You’re going to have a baby?
Joseph: I don’t know what to say. Mary, what will people think? We are not even married yet.
Joseph: Mary, this is amazing, but I will not let you be disgraced. I think it is best to call off the wedding.
Mary: Don’t worry about what people think. I still love you. How about we sleep on it and make a
decision tomorrow?
Angel 1: Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.
Angel 1: The child that she carries is from the Holy Spirit. It is a boy, and you are to name him Jesus. He
will save people from their sins.
Joseph: [waking up] Mary! Mary! I was wrong. We must get married!
The Nativity.
The Innkeeper sits or stands at the side of the stage busy working at a desk when Mary and Joseph
arrive. Behind the Innkeeper there is a barn with animals and a manger filled with hay.
Narrator: In those days a decree went out from the Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus saying that
everyone in the world should be registered in their hometowns. Joseph and Mary left Nazareth and
traveled to the city of David called Bethlehem.
Joseph: It looks like an inn. Maybe they have space for us.
Joseph: We have travelled a long way and we are need of a room. This is Mary. She is pregnant and
about to have a baby.
Innkeeper: I’m sorry, but there just isn’t any space for you.
Innkeeper: I tell you what. I have a barn out back for the animals. There is shelter there, but that is all I
can do. I’m sorry.
Narrator: As they walk their way to the barn, Mary can’t control it anymore. She laid down and gave
birth to a son and named, Jesus. The heavens danced with joy as the savior of the world has arrived.
The End.
