1 SCOPE

This specification defines the minimum requirements on manufacturing, testing and delivery of
the fiber optic cable.
The cable shall serve as the transmission medium for a fiber optic data transmission system.
The laying of the fiber optic cable, the conduit and the data transmission system are subject of
separate specification S08 “Fiber Optic Cable Conduit and FOC Installation”.

2 CODES AND STANDARDS

The manufacturing, construction, labelling and testing of the fiber optic cable system shall
meet the requirements established in the following codes, standards and recommendations
and in the enclosed data sheet:

2.1 Standards - Fiber Optical Cable (FOC)

− Optical fiber

• ITU-T G.652 D characteristics of a single-mode optical fiber cable and/or

• IEC 60793-1-1 optical fibers - generic specification

• IEC 60793-2 optical fibers - product specifications

− Fiber optical cable

• ITU-T L.10 optical fiber cables for duct and tunnel application and/or

• IEC 60794 -1 optical fiber cables - generic specification

• IEC 60794 -2 optical fiber cables - indoor cables

• IEC 60794 -3 optical fiber cables - outdoor cables

2.2 Standards – Measuring Methods

• IEC 60793-1-2
optical fibers – generic specification – measuring methods for dimension
• IEC 60793-1-3
optical fibers – generic specification – measuring methods for mechanical
characteristic
• IEC 60793-1-4
optical fibers - generic specification - measuring methods for transmission and optical
characteristic
• IEC 60811
common test methods for insulating and sheathing materials of electric and optical cables

2.3 Other Standards

− ITU-T K.25 protection of optical fiber cables

− IEC 60304 standard colours for insulation for low-frequency cables and wires

Wherever codes, standards and recommendations are mentioned, the latest published revision
or issue shall be applicable.

3 ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

The environmental data are summarised in the specification S01 “Design and Construction of
I&C System” and in the General Specification G02 “Description of Project and Works”.
The fiber optic cable shall be suitable for blowing in the cable conduit, function properly and
faultlessly under the specified environmental conditions. The outer cladding of cable shall not
be affected by severity of climate (e.g. to lose its hardness during the cable blowing activity,
when exposed to direct sun in summer and affecting the progress of work).

4 TRANSPORT, UNLOADING AND STORAGE

All of this material shall be brought on site, unloaded and stored (if necessary) in such a way
that damages are avoided. The material shall be protected against excessive heat and direct
sun radiation.
Storage supports and stacking heights must be selected in such a way that deformations of the
cables are avoided. Drums shall be secured against roll off.
All cable ends shall be protected with plastic caps against dust and moisture.

5 FIBER OPTIC CABLE

The fiber optic cable shall be laid in parallel to the pipeline in buried cable conduits. The fiber
optic cable system shall be terminated in all stations (e.g. Control Centre, Pumping Station,
Reservoir Station, etc.) that are connected to the communication system. Therefore a fully
dielectric fiber optic cable suitable for ducted or direct buried applications, filled with compound
to prevent axial and longitudinal ingress of water and / or soluble chemicals throughout the
cable shall be provided. The cable shall have gel filled loose tubes as secondary coating of
fibers. The maximum number of loose tubes, for the individual cable design, shall be applied
without use of fillers. Each loose tube shall contain the same number of fibers.
The cable length to be supplied shall be ≥ 6km per drum.
The cable shall contain a number of 72 fibers.
Traction elements shall be made out of Kevlar or equivalent. The allowable tensile loading of
the cable shall be larger than 2.500 N, suitable for direct blowing or pulling the cable into cable
ducts.
The cable shall be protected against termite and rodent e.g. with a layer of glass yarn or
similar.
The outer cladding of the cable shall consist out of black PE. Other colour coding and labelling
of the particular cable components shall be according to IEC 60304. The colour- coding
system shall be discernible throughout the design life of the cable.
Cable markings shall be printed on the outer fiber cable jacket. The markings shall be
permanent, insoluble in water and be legible for the duration of cable life. The markings shall
be printed at intervals of not more than 2 meters. The text has to be approved.
The parameters of the FOC shall be according to the requirements specified in the data sheet
“Fiber Optic Cable”.

6 TESTS

6.1 Type Test

For each type of FOC the complete type test results for applicable tests according to IEC
60794-1-1 (complete cable) and according to IEC 60793-1-1 (optical fiber) shall be part of the
material application.

6.2 Factory Acceptance Test

Each particular cable length and all accessories shall be factory tested and shall be delivered
together with the respective test reports.
The following tests are required for each cable length out of each delivery:

• Attenuation tests of each fiber at 1.300 +30/-15 nm and at 1.550 +30/-70 nm with OTDR
according to IEC 60793-1-4 double-sided shall be performed.
• Determination of optical length shall be performed.
The following tests are required for five percent of the cable lengths out of each delivery or
minimum two cable drums:

• Dispersion tests of each fiber at 1.300 and 1.500 nm according to IEC 60793-1-4
• Water penetration test according to IEC 60794-1-2F5
The fiber manufacturer’s routine test reports shall be submitted together with the cable test
reports.
It has to be ensured that it is possible to identify which fiber lengths have been used for
production of each cable length.
Prior to the factory acceptance test a test procedure shall be provided which is subject of
approval.

6.3 Receipt of Cable Test (RoC)

The following tests shall be performed for each particular cable length upon receipt on site:

• Attenuation tests of each fiber at 1.300 +30/-15 nm and at 1.550 +30/-70 nm with OTDR
according to IEC 60793-1-4 double-sided
• Determination of optical length
• Visual inspection
Test results are subject to approval.

6.4 Test protocols

Test protocols shall be provided for all activities conducted in course of tests.
