Lycoming T53
Type: Turboshaft
Power: 641 kw (860 hp) at 21,510 rpm
Compressor: Five-stage axial, single-stage centrifugal
Combustor: Reverse flow, 11 fuel nozzles
Turbine: Single-stage axial gas generator, single-stage axial free power
The primary difference between gas turbine and reciprocating engine is that reciprocating
engines convert pressure into rotating motion using pistons, while a gas turbine engine, or a
combustion turbine, uses the pressure from the exploding fuel to turn a turbine and produce
thrust.
4. HOW WILL YOU KNOW IF WHICH IS THE RIGHT OR LEFT SIDE ON THE ENGINE?
Right and left sides for the engine are determined by viewing the engine from the rear.
5. WHAT IS A DIFFUSER
Diffuser is one key component of the gas turbine combustor following the compressor. Its
primary function is to slow down the air flow delivered by the compressor in order to promote
efficient combustion and avoid large total pressure losses.
The diffuser is the divergent section of the engine after the compressor and before the
combustion section. It has the all-important function of reducing high-velocity compressor
discharge air to increased pressure at a slower velocity.
6. WHERE ARE THE AIR BLEED PORTS LOCATED? AND WHAT ARE THEIR FUNCTIONS?
Located in the compressor and impeller housing. Bleed air ports are small openings in the
compressor case at the associated compressor stage
7. THE TWO ROTATING ASSEMBLIES OF THE TURBINE SECTION
The two rotating assemblies are known as the gas producer, sometimes referred to as the N1 or
first stage, and the power turbine N2 or second stage.
