NSTP WEEK 3 LESSON
1. Answer the following questions:

a. What is the video all about?
The video is about what the Filipinos want their lives to be by the year 2040. This
involves their dreams and ambition that they want to achieve. The video stated a unified
goal, as a country, and a goal for all the Filipino Citizen.
b. What can you say about the Vision for the Philippine society and the Vision for the
Filipinos as presented in the video?
In our country’s current situation, it can be said that the vision stated in the video
is too ambitious. Although it might have been possible before the pandemic happened,
now it is just not sure unless our country improves or even recover back to what we were
before the pandemic.
c. Based on the video, do you think that the vision and goals set forth by the present
administration of President Rodrigo Duterte can be attained? Why or why not?
As I have said, it would’ve been possible before the pandemic. Our country is in a
huge debt even before the pandemic, and it got worse during the administration of
President Duterte. At this point, I am also unsure of what will happen to our country in
the future. But all I can say is that due to the pandemic’s effects and the debts that our
country has, the Ambisyon 2040 is a distant dream. Aside from that the debts we have
will only make it harder for the Filipino people, the poor will be poorer.

Lifting the poor and other economic groups that used to lie behind will be the priority.

1. Name at least two (2) contemporary issues in the Philippines relevant to the following
categories and provide a short description for each of the issues that you have identified:
a. Socio-cultural issues
1. Colorism
Due to the centuries of oppression from the Spanish and Americans during
the time of colonization, an idealistic view of white beauty has been embedded in the
minds of the Filipinos. The belief that having a light complexion symbolizes an “ideal”
person, as light skin is often conflated with beauty, power, and high social status.
(Rondilla, 2009)
2. Colonial Mentally
We’ve been under several colonizers, and with their centuries of oppression it
seems like us Filipinos have forgotten our own excellence and greatness. Even
today, in an era of independence, we see other countries as the standard of what is
good and great while continue to degrade ourselves, our country, our products. As
we are uncertain of what do and do not define our culture after we’ve been colonized
for centuries, have given birth to colonial mentality, this have caused the feeling of
shame and unfamiliarity to our own identities and ourselves,
b. Political issues (domestic)
1, Inadequacy of Voters’ Education
One of the biggest political issues that exists in the country and that is not
given much attention is that the majority of the voting population is under-educated.
Without quality education, people don’t learn how to think for themselves and worse,
align their thinking to those people who they think are superior to them but
unfortunately are just as ignorant as they are. Therefore, without quality education,
people wouldn’t know how to choose the right leaders so they will choose people
who seem to be well-known, gives them money, or a relative of other prominent
politicians.
2. Corruption
Corruption is an issue deeply embedded in the Philippine politics. From the
worst to the higher degree of worst., corruption always existed in the government.
Obviously, this has been one of the significant obstacles that hinders the growth of
the country and the improvements in the life of the Filipinos.
c. Economic issues (domestic)

1. Increasing Unemployment Rate
During the pandemic, many people had no choice but to stop operating their
businesses or are forced to quit work. This September of 2021, the Philippines’
unemployment rate rose to 8.9% even after the government have somewhat eased
the restrictions despite the continuous increase of COVID-19 cases. This is recorded
to be recorded as the highest unemployment rate for 2021.
2. Erosion of Basic Needs
Basic necessities like food, and shelter are continuously increasing in cost.
Prices of the products increases with the increase in demand. This results to more
people entering poverty, and experience hunger.
d. International political issues
1. Terrorist Attack advisory in Japan
Last month, the Japanese government had released an advisory for all of its
citizens overseas that they have received an information about a possible terror
attack in the Southeast Asian countries Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand,
Myanmar, and the Philippines. They have warned their citizens to stay away from
crowded places for the mean time.
2. US-China relations
For decades, the relationship between United States and China has been in
its lowest point. In 2020, the Trump Administration ramped up its confrontation with
Beijing, ordering the Chinese consulate in Houston to close over concerns about
economic espionage.
e. International economic issues
1. Increasing Global Unemployment Rate
During 2020 and 2021, which was the time when the pandemic happened,
the amount of unemployed person worldwide rose up to more than a hundred million
compared in 2019. From 187 million in 2019, it struck up to 220 million in year 2020
and 2021.
2. Growing Income Inequality
Inequality has been decreasing over the decades as shown in the data. The
problem is that in measuring inequality, in income for example, the scales does not show
inequality if all of the population has experienced the same thing. For example, there is a
10% increase in all people’s income. Since all people had experienced 10% increase the
data will show that there is no inequality. But if we look into it, considering their social
standing, a 10% increase of income in a millionaire is different to the 10% increase in
income of a normal laborer.
