ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF 4.57M CLEAR SPAN PRECAST RCC SOLID SLAB SUPERSTRUCTURE WITH FILL

FOR FILL = 4000 mm

1a. BASIC DATA : As per contract data / IRS requirements / Assumptions
Design earth cushion below ballast = 4000 mm
Ballast cushion over formation = 350 mm 4920
Clear span of solid slab superstructure = 4570 mm.
Width of bearings, Ds = 350 mm Idealised Span (Along the traffic)
(Ref : Clause 2.12.12 of IRS Bridge Rules)
Thickness of solid slab, Dd = 700 mm
Effective span L = 4570 + 350 / 2+ 350 /2 = 4920 mm
Barrel length
No. of Tracks = 1
Distance between tracks = 0 m 23327
Formation width = 7.85 m Section across Traffic
Barrel length of the Bridge , b = 23327 mm Section across Traffic
Thickness of kerbs on either side = 300 mm
Wearing coat thickness at C/L of alignment= 0 mm for bridges without earth cusion
Wearing coat thickness near kerbs = 0 mm

2a. LOAD CALCULATIONS

3
Unit Weight of Concrete = 25 kN/m
3
Unit Weight of Saturated Soil, g sat = 20 kN/m
3
Unit Weight of Submerged Soil, gsub = 10 kN/m
3
Unit Weight of wearing coat over solid slab = 22 kN/m
3
Unit weight of Ballast = 20.4 kN/m
Weight of Rail = 60 kg/m = 0.59 kN/m
= 1.18 kN/m/track
Sleeper density = 1660 Nos./kM = 1.66 Nos./m
Wt of PSC Sleeper = 310 kg = 3.04 kN
Design wt of sleeper = 3.04×1.66 x 1.2 = 6.06 kN/m/Track
20% extra weight considered
2a.1 Dead Loads
Self weight of solid slab = 17.50 kN/m / M width

2a.2 SIDL
a.) Loads due to Rails & Sleepers = 7.24 kN/m/Track

Dispersion width calculation for Type I Sleeper

Dispersion width for live load above sleeper across the traffic direction
Dispersion width = Length of Sleeper + 2*(Depth of fill + ballast)/2 +0*(span)/4
(As per clause 2.3.4.2(b)of IRS Bridge Rule : Dispersion through slab not considered for precast slab)
Length of the sleeper (As per IRS Bridge rules) = 2.745 m
Base Width of the sleeper (As per clause 2.3.4.2 of IRS Bridge rules) = 0.254 m
Dispersion width across traffic direction = 2.745+ 2x(0.35+4.00)/2+0x4.92/4 = 7.095 m
Since 7.095 >0(C/C distance between tracks thus 1 track case governs)

. 2.
Title. ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF PRECAST RCC SOLID SALB SUPERSTRUCTURE
OF CLEAR SPAN 4.57 M FOR EARTH CUSHION VARYING FROM
4.00 m to 5.00 m
Doc. No. KEC-RG301-S&B-MNB-SLAB-DN-101

Thus effective dispersion width across traffic direction = (7.095+0.00)/1 = 7.095 m/Track

Hence, load due to Rails & Sleepers = 7.24/7.10 = 1.02 kN/m / M width

b.) Load due to ballast

Volume of ballast per track (as per PW manual - Anex 2/11) = 2.690 m3
Weight of ballast = 54.88 kN/m/track
Base width of ballast considered (as per PW manual - Anex 2/11) = 5.702 m

Dispersion width ballast load

Dispersion width = Width of ballast + 2*(Depth of fill)/2 +0*(span)/4
(As per clause 2.3.4.2(b)of IRS Bridge Rule : Dispersion through slab not considered for precast slab)
= 5.702+ 2 x (4.000-5.702/2/30)/2 + 0x4.92/4 = 9.607 m/track
Since 9.607 >0(C/C distance between tracks thus 1 track case governs)
Thus effective dispersion width = (9.607+0.00)/1 = 9.607 M/ track
Hence, load intensity due to Ballast = 54.88/9.61 = 5.71 kN/m / M width

c.) Load due to wearing coat

Load due to wearing coat = (0.00 + 0.00)/2 x 22 = 0.00 kN/m / M width

d.) Load due to Earth cushion :

Load due to earth cushion = 4.000x20 = 80.00 kN/m / M width

Total Design Load Due to SIDL = 1.02+5.71+0.00+80.00 = 86.73 kN/m / M width

2a.3 LIVE LOADS: (As per Cl. 2.3(a) of IRS Bridge Rules)
EUDL at track level for 4.92 m effective span as per appendix XXIII of IRS Bridge Rules
= 734.5728 kN for Bending
Span Load (BM) Load (SF) CDA = 917.3652 kN for Shear
4.5 676.89 866.52 0.91 CDA = 0.8826
5.0 745.56 927.05 0.88
Dispersed width of slab = 7.095 m/Track
As per clause 2.4.2.1 of IRS Bridge Rules
CDA for 4350 mm fill over slab = (0.883/2) x (3 - 3.45) =
0.000
Thus, Design EUDL for bending = 734.57 = = 734.57/7.10/4.92=
21.043 kN/m / M width
EUDL for shear = 917.37 = = 917.37/7.10/4.92=

2a.4 DERAILMENT LOAD (As per Cl. 2.14 & appendix XXIX of IRS Bridge rules)
Derailment load for ULS Condition
Case 1 Two vertical line loads 75 kN/m 1.6 m appart
Width of contact under each line load = 0 mm
Dispersion width on either side = 0+ 2x(4000+350)/2+0x4920/4= 4350 mm for each line load
= 5950 mm for both line loads
Limiting dispersed width upto edge of slab = 23326.7/2 - 2250 + 1600/2 + 5950.0/2
= 13188.3 mm
Actual dispersion width across traffic direction = 5.950 m for both line loads
Distributed Load = 2x75 / 5.950 = 25.21 kN/m / M width

Case 2 A Single load = 200 kN

Dispersion width = Length of Sleeper + 2*(Depth of fill + ballast)/2 +0*(span)/4
(As per clause 2.3.4.2(b)of IRS Bridge Rule : Dispersion through slab not considered for precast slab)
Length of the sleeper (As per IRS Bridge rules) = 2.745 m
Base Width of the sleeper (As per clause 2.3.4.2 of IRS Bridge rules) = 0.254 m
Dispersion width across traffic direction = 2.745+ 2x(0.35+5.00)/2+0x4.92/4 = 8.095 m

Thus effective dispersion width across traffic direction = (8.095+0.00)/1 = 8.095 m/Track

Hence, load due to Rails & Sleepers = 7.24/8.10 = 0.89 kN/m / M width

b.) Load due to ballast

Since 10.607 >0(C/C distance between tracks thus 1 track case governs)
Thus effective dispersion width = (10.607+0.00)/1 = 10.607 M/ track
Hence, load intensity due to Ballast = 54.88/10.61 = 5.17 kN/m / M width

c.) Load due to wearing coat

0.87fyAst
Mu = 0.87*fy*Pt/100*(1-1.1*(fy/fck)*pt/100)*bd2
Coeficients of quadratic equation to solve for Pt are :
a = (0.87*fy/100)*(1.1*fy/fck/100) = 0.7975 Mpa
b = (-0.87*fy/100) = -4.35 Mpa

c = Mu/bd Mpa, where Mu in N-mm, b & d in mm
2
% pt = { -b - sqrt (b -4ac)}/2a based on actual section properties ----------- (A)
2
= 100*(Mu/bd )/(0.87*0.95*fy) based on restricted lever arm, z = 0.95d----------- (B)
Value of % pt shall be the maximum out of A & B above

Moment of resistance Mu,lim = 0.4Xu, max / d (1-0.5Xu, max / d)bd2 fck =

Area of reinforcement provided, = Ast

Neutral axis depth as per actual reinforcement, "kd"is obtained by solving the quadratic equation
b.(kd)^2*0.5 = m*Ast*(d-kd), ie, kd = {-m*Ast + Sqrt[(m*Ast)^2 +2b*d*m*Ast]}/b

Neutral axis depth factor as per actual reinforcement, k = {-m/d*Ast + Sqrt[(m/d*Ast)^2 +2bm/d*Ast]}/b
Lever arm factor, j= 1- k/3
Moment of inertia of the section, I = b*(kd)^3/3+mAst*[(1-k)d]^2
Maximum compressive stress in concrete, c = M/I*kd

As per cl. 15.9.8 of IRS Concrete Bridge Code

Design Crack width W cr = (3*acr*em)/(1+2(acr-Cnom)/(h-dc))
acr = The distance from crack to the surface of nearest longitudinal bar
Cnom = Nominal clear cover to reinforcement
em = Strain at the level of cracking after stiffening of concrete
h = Overall depth of the section
dc = Depth of neutral axis
