GENERAL INFORMATION
1-1 INTRODUCTION
The hydraulic starter is used to start gas turbine engines. Precise starter configura-
tion and performance will vary sightly depending upon which engine is to be started. For
list of starter to engine application see table 1-1.
One variable displacement hydraulic starter will be mounted on each turbine engine
to be started.
A source of hydraulic fluid, at the spceified pressures and flow rates, will be required
to operate the starter.
1-5 STARTER PERFORMANCE CHARACTERICTICS
Refer to the applicable model number block on the applicable starter installation
drawing for performance specifications such as fluid pressure and flows, output torques,
etc.

DESCRIPTION
2-1 SYSTEM OPERATION
The Vickers starter is used in a closed loop hydraulic circuit. High pressure fluid
flows directly from a supply pump to the starter as illustrated in Figure 2-1. This basic
circuit is modified by the addition of filters, gages, check valves, and valving necessary
for the particular application.
Fluid flows and pressures to the starter will vary as dictated by the model and speed.
One starter is mounted on each turbine engine to be started. Hydraulic pressure is
applied to any one of the hydraulic starters. The starter converts the high pressure fluid
power to shaft torque to motor the engine during starting. The starter discharges the fluid
to the low pressure side of the system for return to the supply pump(s).

The clutch allows the engine to accelerate from the starter cut-out speed ( 4000 rpm
approximately ) up to engine idle speed and operate without further rotation of the main
elements of the starter. During overrunning, only the small inner shaft of the starter is
driven by the engine.
The unit is direct mounted to the engine gear box and drives the engine through a
floating spline coupling. The starter is self-lubricated by the system fluid. A case drain
port is provided and is connected to the reservoir in the accessory skid. The seal drain
port is open to a drip pan, but sees no flow under normal operations.
The starter control may be equipped with a "soft start" feature if desired. With this -
feature the starter output torque ramps up to maximum level at initiation of the start cycle
over a 3 (three) second period. This compares to a build up time of 1.25 second with the
standard control. Operation after this initial condition is unchanged from standard control.
This feature is incorporated in starter model 53WK57016-1,53WK57017 and
53WK5701 8.

3-3 CLEANLINESS
CAUTION: TO ENSURE EFFICIENT, TROUBLE-FREE OPERATION OF THE
HYDRAULIC STARTER. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT ALL HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
COMPONENTS AND FLUID BE FREE OF DIRT, WATER, AND OTHER
CONTAMINANTS. THE STARTER HAS BEEN THROUGHLY CLEANED AND ALL
PARTS SEALED BY THE MANUFACTURER BEFORE SHIPMENT. EXTREME CARE
MUST BE TAKEN TO ELIMINATE THE POSSIBILITY OF THE HYDRAULIC
INTERCONNECTING LINES AND FITTINGS CARRYING CONTAMINATION INTO
SYSTEM.
All hydraulic interconnecting lines should be cleaned (steam cleaned, pickled, etc. ) after
all fabrication work (bending, welding, etc.) has been completed.
The system should then be flushed using a separate flush pump with a large
filter. A restrictor valve ( manual shut off ) with jumper hoses, if required,
should be installed at starter location. System should be flushed at varying
pressures and flows up to rated conditions. Filter should be checked
periodically and flushing continued until no contaminates are found in the
element.
All connecting pipe and subassemblies shall be flushed so that a fluid sample,
extracted per ISO 4021 and analyzed for contamination per ISO 3938, shall satisfy solid
particle contamination levels per ISO 4406, CLASS 1613.

A. Refer to proper installation drawing, Figure 3-1 to 3-4, for rated pressures.
B. Loosen jam nut (25, Figure 7-2 and adjust setscrew (26) with conditions as
follows.
1. Provide rated starter flow and pressure from supply pump.
C. Adjust starter load to limit shaft speed to value approximately 1000 RPM
above light off speed. This speed will use full flow from supply pump.
Adjust setscrew (26) for proper inlet pressure (compensator control set
pressure.
D. Check starter control for stability over starter speed range of 1000 RPM to
maximum obtainable by varying load on output shaft.
NOTE: For replacement of the shaft seal assembly on the hydraulic starter, use Kit
Part No. listed in table 6-1.
A. Disconnect all hydraulic lines at the starter. Plug the ports and cap the lines
to prevent dust or dirt from entering the hydraulic system.. Tag the fittings
on the hydraulic lines with their respective pump port numbers to insure
proper connection.
B. Remove the starter from its mounting pad and place it on a clean work
bench.
D. Remove safety wire from the shaft seal retainer socket head mounting head
bolts.

variations, depending upon the exact model number
Explanation of Effectivity Codes
Difference between two or more similar assemblies listed in the Detail Parts List -
are indicated in the Effectivity Code column by the use of code letters as shown in'
the accompanying Effectivity Code Table.
The letters in the Effectivity Code column identify detail parts and subassemblies
which are used in the Hydraulic Starter Assemblies indicated by the same letter.
Parts and subassemblies for which the Effectivity dode column is blank are
