Unit 2: The Atomic Theory

Lesson 2.1: The Concept of Atom in Ancient Times

Worksheet 2.1: The Concept of Atom in Ancient Times

PART 1

Instructions: Identify what or who is being described for each item. Write your answer

below each question.

1. Who was the Greek philosopher who proposed the idea of the atom?
Lucippus of miletus
2. Who was the teacher of Democritus?
Teacher leucippus
3. Who was the Greek philosopher who rebuked the idea of the atoms?
Democritus
4. What was the elements proposed by Aristotle?
Fire, Air, Earth, And Water
5. What are the components of everything according to atomism?
Atoms And Void
6. What do you call the space where atoms can be found?
Melbourne, Australia
7. When was the idea of the atom rediscovered?
1st Century bce
8. Who was the alchemist who believed in the ideas of Democritus?
Leucippus And Democritus
9. What is the philosophy that emphasizes the presence of the atoms and void?
Philosophical Atomism

PART 2

Instructions: Compare and contrast the following pairs of ideas. Give a short explanation for

your answers.

1. atomism vs creationism

Creationism has been opposed by atomism since Epicurus (342-270

B.C.) asserted that random events occur in matter. The early atomists
developed a theory of matter to support a pantheistic worldview; in
modern science, atomistic assumptions are implemented into current
theories of matter, forces and cosmology.

2. atom vs the ancient elements

An atom is the part of an element. A particular element is composed of only

one type of atom. Atoms are further composed of subatomic particles called
electrons, protons and neutrons. Elements can combine with each other to
form molecules via chemical reaction.

3. Aristotle vs Democritus

Aristotle disagreed with Democritus and offered his own idea of the
composition of matter. According to Aristotle, everything was
composed of four elements: earth, air, fire, and water. Deomcritus'
theory better explained things, but Aristotle was more influential, so
his ideas prevailed

4. atoms of different substances vs atoms of the same substance

Different between atom and element Atom The smallest particle of an

element, made of electrons, protons and neutrons. Element : A pure
substance composed of the same type of atom throughout

5. indestructible atomos vs the atom we know today

PART 3

Instructions: Read the situations below and explain your answer using 5-10 sentences.

1. Can the philosophy of atomism still be applied in modern science? Is there an

indestructible substance that comprises everything? is a natural philosophy
proposing that the physical universe is composed of fundamental indivisible
components known as atoms.

2. What is the problem that can result if there was an indestructible atom? Why is this

not feasible with what we know about matter today?

Unit 2: The Atomic Theory

Lesson 2.2: Discovery of the Subatomic Particles

Worksheet 2.2: Discovery of the Subatomic Particles

PART 1

Instructions: Identify what or who is being described for each item. Write your answer

below each question.

1. Who was the one who first proposed the existence of the atom?
Demo Critus (Greek philosopher)
2. Who was the one who first proposed the atomic theory?
John Dalton
3. Who was the one who discovered the electron?
Joseph john ``J.J’’ Thomson
4. Who was the one who discovered the proton?
Ernest Rutherford
5. Who was the one who discovered the neutron?
James chadwick
6. Who was the one who discovered the nucleus?
Ernest Rutherford
7. Who was the one who discovered the canal rays?
Scientist Eugen Goldstein
8. What was the experiment used by Rutherford to come up with his atomic model?
Ruthersford’s gold foil experiment
9. What were used by Thomson to observe the presence of the electron?
Cathode ray tube
10. What do you call Dalton’s atomic model?
Billiard ball model

PART 2

Instructions: Compare and contrast the following pairs of ideas. Give a short explanation for

your answers.

1. canal rays vs cathode rays

Cathode rays are charged negatively, while Canal Rays are charged positively.
Cathode rays emanate from the cathode, while the rays of the canal do not emanate
from the anode, but are produced inside the chamber by the collision of gas
molecules.

2. solid sphere model vs plum pudding model

So the plum pudding model is different from the hard-sphere model of the atom
because in the hard sphere model of the atom, the atom is the smallest division of
matter. But in the plum pudding model, there is a negatively charged electron
which is smaller than an atom.

3. plum pudding model vs nuclear model

In the plum pudding model, there is a positive sphere with negative charge
randomly placed within the sphere. There is no empty space. In the nuclear model,
there is a central positive, tiny nucleus, with mostly empty space and lots of
negative charges a long way from the nucleus. Compare the masses.

4. solid sphere model vs nuclear model

5. electrons vs protons
Electrons are a type of subatomic particle with a negative charge. Protons are a
type of subatomic particle with a positive charge. Protons are bound together in an
atom's nucleus as a result of the strong nuclear force. Neutrons are a type of
subatomic particle with no charge (they are neutral)

PART 3

Instructions: Read the situations below and explain your answer using 5-10 sentences.

1. Is the nuclear model the best model for an atom? Does it have flaws? Are there still

some concerns that should be addressed?

2. Can you use the nuclear model to explain chemical and nuclear reactions? How?
