Biogas in

Romania
A little research...
What is
Biogas ?
Biogas is a mixture of gases, primarily consisting of methane,
carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide, produced from raw
materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste,
plant material, sewage, green waste, wastewater, and food waste.
It is a renewable energy source.
Biogas....

Clean, efficient source of renewable energy

• Made from organic waste
• Produces methane
• Replaces non-renewable energy
• Digested in an airtight container
Biogas digester
=a device or structure in which the digestion of organic waste matter
by bacteria takes place with the production of a burnable biogas and
a nutrient-rich slurry
Why Have a Biogas Digester?
• Replaces fossil fuels and other sources of nonrenewable energy
Simple, cost effective designs
• Highly available fuel supply
- no longer polluting water
• Saves money
• Decrease greenhouse gas emissions
• Produces organic fertilizer

Biogas Types

1.The fixed-dome type of biogas plant

2.The floating gas holder type of biogas plant
With an area of 238,397 km2, Romania is the largest country in
South-eastern Europe

About half of the area is covered with natural and semi-natural

ecosystems. More than ¼ of the territory is covered by
undisturbed forests.

Owing to domestic coal and oil industry, the energy

sector plays an important role in the country’s
economy.
Oil
Romania is rich in oil. The country has extremely
promising biomass potential and several ongoing
projects are focusing on its valorisation.

Coal= sedimentary deposited composed of carbon

Romania produces pit coal and lignite and maintains
several coal-fired powerplants. Hard coal resoruces are
estimated at 2446 million tonnes.
Portrayed as a key element to Romania’s
sustainable energy future, biomass
should be the object of intense debate in
connection with the future national
energy strategy.

Solid (wood, charcoal) and liquid (biodiesel,

bioethanol) forms of biomass are rather well
known, but it is also possible to derive significant
amounts of valuable, clean energy by burning
(upgraded) biogas.
main obstacles and
barriers

1. Limited availability of domestic

financial resources for investment.

2. Disputes over the land property.

3. Weak supported research sector.
