Reflection
As a college student, I think I am a growing writer at the same time. After this semester, I
learned a lot of different ideas from what I had before. According to Mike, he mentioned that
when we read an article, we need to analyze the article from the writer's point of view. Therefore,
when I tried to read the article from the writer's point of view, I find that there is a big difference
between reading an article using the writer's perspective and the reader's perspective. For
example, using the writer’s mind, I would think about why the author would use this method
here. However, using the reader’s mind, I would only focus on the point that the article was
trying to tell me. So, using the writer’s perspective to read the article helped me to learn some
expression skills.
Meanwhile, in Shelley’s article, she mentions that "Every time you write on the page and
talk back to the text, you get your money's worth, because you make the text truly your own, and
you get your time's worth, because you're staying awake and you're more likely to Every time
you write on the page and talk back to the text, you get your money's worth, because you make
the text truly your own, and you get your time's worth, because you're staying awake and you're
more likely to I think taking notes in a book is a very effective practice. When I first tried to
mark up the book, I thought it was a waste of time to record my thoughts. However, when I was
in class, I could know exactly what I was thinking and what the passage was about through my
notes. This not only helps me to speak and ask questions smoothly during the writing class. The
benefits of note-taking are also evident in my other classes. For example, in my math class, I
write down some relevant problems, and solutions to problems and mark some key formulas in
my textbook. So, I think note-taking helped me a lot in becoming a writer. It not only makes me
remember the article when I reread it, but also helps me to find the point I want to quote quickly.
Finally, in Lennie's article, she says, "So, whatever writing assignment you receive,
inspect it closely for what concepts it asks you to bring into your That's what Key Disciplinary
means. Disciplinary helps us identify the topic, content, and direction of our writing. For
example, it tells us what discipline we are writing in, what scope we are writing in, and so on.
This is especially important for academic writing. So, when I learned this idea, I started to look
at the key disciplinary questions in my writing, and reading the questions carefully before
answering them made my writing more relevant and easier to find the focus of my writing. So,
after learning about key disciplinary, I think I am one step closer to being a writer.
Of course, as a young writer, I have some shortcomings. For example, when I was
preparing for writing project two, I did not read the topic and key discipline carefully, which
caused my prepared writing to be a bit off-topic. Also, in my writing project two, I found that I
was very bad at paraphrasing and I could not paraphrase other writers' writings perfectly. In my
paraphrasing, it was difficult for me to summarize all the key points of other authors, and I often
included some unimportant content in my paraphrasing. I think this is my flaw, which can also
be reflected in my academic writing. For example, when summarizing an author's ideas, I will
summarize more of the unimportant content or less. Although I have some weaknesses as a
writer. However, I also have strengths. As a young writer, I think I have a creative spirit. By
writing project one, I want to change the kind of article for the poster. Although, I also thought
of many non-academic writing categories. However, through my chosen essay, I think that the
poster not only reflects the focus of my chosen essay, but also helps the public to understand my
ideas clearly.
Dealing with the difficulties encountered in writing is also an excellent way to improve
my writing. Throughout the first few times of writing, I still have some problems with the
specification of my essay, such as the way of quoting and expanding the content of the article.
When I was writing, I tended to limit myself to the requirements given in the topic. I often lacked
some expansion of my point of view, and my ideas. However, through reading among my peers,
they were able to give me some very useful ideas or find the shortcomings of my essay. So,
through their help, I was also able to handle the problems I encountered while writing very well.
Although, there are still flaws in my writing now. However, compared to what I wrote
down on the first day of class, my writing is improving. I have fewer grammar and word errors
than before. Also, in the short time I have been writing, I have learned to be proficient in
analyzing topics and presenting my ideas about them, expanding on my own ideas, and using my
Because the course is time limited. If I had more time, I would continue to study how to
transform academic articles into non-academic ones. This method of article transformation is
very interesting, and it can exercise my ability to extract effective information. Also, I can get
familiar with the characteristics of each article type when transforming them.
Finally, I would like to present my portfolio. My writing project one is to put together an
essay on psychological literacy literature. The content is about why people are resistant to
psychotherapy and believe that some therapies have negative effects. It also describes how to
improve people’s psychological literacy literature. Then, I chose to turn this academic article into
a poster. Because I think the poster fits well with this psychological theme. The poster is not only
easy to understand to help people who do not know the article quickly understand the main
content but also attracts people through some patterns and eye-catching fonts. Therefore, I chose
the poster to transform the article. For writing project two, I read ten articles about five-
paragraph reading to relay the ideas of all of them. In this writing project, I chose to relay the
opinions of ten authors by writing a reflection. Four of them disagree with the five-paragraph
writing style, three of them agree, and three of them think that five-paragraph writing has both
advantages and disadvantages. One of the benefits they see is that five-paragraph writing helps
young writers build a clear structure. But the disadvantage is that five-paragraph writing can
limit the writer’s thinking and creativity. In my experience, I believe that five-paragraph writing
does have both benefits and drawbacks. So, we have to choose whether to use five-paragraph
