Introduction: - Food plays a significant role in culture and is often used to connect people to
their traditions and heritage. In art, food can be used as a storytelling device to convey specific
emotions or cultural elements. It is rare to use smell as a storytelling tool. It can add another
layer of immersion for the audience, Where the Axone represents one of the famous foods of
Nagaland. The taste of both sides of the world is in Axone - the taste of change - The film is
friends holding together and, in all the hurdles of life, trying to cook a portion of traditional
northeastern food for a friend on her special day. There are some key points to highlight. Why
are they so concerned about cooking Axone, and how can someone relate it to their culture?
Data section: - The cultural diversity of Northeast India is one of the greatest in the world. There
are over 200 tribes in the state, including tribes such as Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh.
Lessons on love, appreciation, and friendship, as well as a glimpse into the lives of those
frequently lighted by Bollywood. "Axone," tells the story of Upasana and Chanbi, two
northeastern immigrants living in the Humayupur area of Delhi, a famous ghetto for immigrants
from the northeast. The film follows the two girls as they attempt to cook a traditional dish called
Pork Akhuni or Axone for their roommate Minam, who is getting married later that day. They
went to sneak around and purchase their traditional food in secret; there was a restriction on
selling their traditional food in the open. They bought 3kg of pork, but chanbi was sure it was
less than 3kg. The shopkeeper asked if there was anything else you were looking for, and zorem
replied Axone. After purchasing, they left the place immediately and called their Minam, letting
Upasana went to zorem’s shop zorem gave the food ingredients (bamboo leaves, spring onion
oil, pork and akone) to upsana in a steel pot and explained how to cook it and things to be sure
like there should be no oil when pork is dried. The challenge is that the dish has a strong,
pungent smell, and cooking will likely raise objections from their neighbours and landlords.
They started the oscillating fan, so that smell faded away. They started cooking the food.
Traditional background music is playing, and the ingredients shown are bamboo leaves,
tomatoes, gingers, peas, spring onion, pork, and herbs. Upasana washes the pork, cuts it into
small pieces, and boils it in a smoked pot, she put meat slices in a boiling pot and put herbs
inside the pot, and they swirled it. Upasana tasted it, and she forgot something Chanbi got mad at
her because she did not listen to zorem., an uncooperative gas cylinder and interpersonal drama.
Upasana got the cylinder and started cooking. They put akone inside the smoked pot, and it
smelled too strong. Their neighbours closed the windows, but the oscillating fan got to stop, and
the smell got unbearable. Neighbours create a mess, and Chanbi and Upasna, are forbidden by
their landlord from cooking at home. They called their friends and colleagues to help them find a
place where they could cook akone. After many tries, they started cooking their food in the
community hall. Unfortunately, they could not complete it as the person who booked the hall
showed up and asked them to leave. They decided to cook it on their terrace with the help of
zorem and said they arranged a cooking spot without letting anyone knows. And finally, upasna
made Axone for her friend. It is evening; everyone looks beautiful in traditional northeastern
wear. They surprised her friend with a lovely arrangement. They serve the food beautifully and
traditionally, and everyone enjoys the food and the company of each other.
Critical thinking - Cooking Axone (a dish made from fermented soybeans) was vital to them
because it helped them feel connected to their home in the mega city. They wanted to make their
friend Minam feel comfortable and less homesick by preparing a familiar dish for her and trying
to remind her of memories of family gatherings and special occasions. This dish's taste, aroma,
and texture are deeply ingrained in her mind and heart. Yes, people from different cultures can
relate to the emotions portrayed in a film, even if the specific cultural details may differ. Being
away from home can be difficult, making people feel disconnected from their roots. However, it
can also serve as a reminder of the importance of these things in one's life. Being away from
home can make a person appreciate the values, traditions, and customs that make up their
identity and give them a sense of belonging. It can also make them understand the love and
support of their family, who can provide a sense of security and comfort even when they are
miles away. Overall, being away from home can make a person realize the value of culture and
family and how essential they are in shaping who we are and providing a sense of belonging.
Conclusion: - Traditional food reminds us of our cultural heritage and the way of life of our
ancestors. These conventional foods also hold a lot of wisdom and knowledge passed down from
generation to generation. They teach us the importance of using locally sourced ingredients, the
value of seasonality, and the art of cooking and preparing food. They remind us of our roots and
our connection with our past. To conclude, acknowledging that others have the right to a pleasant
environment and should consider others' experiences. Other people cannot be bothered or
disturbed by the smell of their food. This could refer to a situation where someone is cooking or
eating in a shared space, and others are bothered by the smell, but that does not mean that one
can judge or criticize someone for their traditional foods. Respecting and appreciating the
diversity of cultures and their traditions is important. In these films, they were ignored and
dismissed by their colleagues, who saw their food choices as a personal preference rather than a
cultural and emotional connection. This lack of understanding and empathy highlights the need
for greater awareness and sensitivity toward the food politics faced by individuals from
marginalized communities. We need to recognize and respect the cultural significance of food,
and the impact that changes in dietary habits can have on individuals and their sense of identity.
"A Taste of Change" is a fitting title for a film like Axone that encourages viewers to reflect on
their attitudes and actions towards different cultures and to make positive changes in their
thinking and behavior. The title suggests that the film offers a new perspective and the
