“despite” and “in spite of”

They are linkers, a linker is a word that is made to link two sentences, also known as
connectors. There are many types:

- Reason and clause: because, as, since, etc…

- Purpose: in order to, so as to, etc…
- Consequence: as consequence, consequently, as a result, so, etc…
- Addition: in addition, moreover, furthermore, besides, etc…
- Contrast: despite, in spite of, although, however, nevertheless, etc…

But now we are going to analyze two:

1. Despite
2. In spite of
They are contrast linkers that mean the same, despite they can be used indistinctly.
How do they work?

- Despite / In spite of + noun

o Despite the rain, we went out.
o In spite of all my work, I didn’t pass my exam.
- Despite / In spite of + ing
o Despite raining, we went to the theatre.
o In spite of working so hard, I didn’t get a pay rise.
o A very common error made by students is:
 In spite of it was raining, we went out. (it’s incorrected because “in
spite of” has to go followed by a noun or a -ing verb, and in this
sentence the subject “it” is followed by the verb in past continuous.
 In order to include a sentence with subject and verb we have to add
“despite” and “in spite of” + THE FACT THAT:
 In spite of the fact that it was raining, we went out.
 Despite the fact that I worked very hard, I failed my exam.
Exercise: translate into English:

- A pesar de que tienen un buen sueldo, no llegan a fin de mes.

- A pesar de que tienen mucho dinero, no son felices.

- A pesar de estudiar mucho, suspendió el examen de inglés.

- A pesar de no sentirse bien, fue a la escuela.

- A pesar de no ser buen profesor, a sus alumnos les cae bien.

Remember that we can use “despite” and “in spite of” indistinctly, that’s why, we can use
“despite” instead of “in spite of” and vice versa.
Exercise keys:
1. Despite having a good salary, they can’t make ends meet. / Despite the fact that they
have a good salary, they can’t make ends meet.
2. In spite of having so much money, they aren’t happy. / In spite of the fact that they have
so much money, they aren’t happy.
3. Despite studying hard, he/she failed his/her English exam.
4. Despite the fact that he isn’t a good teacher, his students like him.
