4.2.3 Calibration operation

4.2.3.1 VelCal

The SoundPath calibration is carried out by using the P/E parameters of HotPass zone,
and the velocity calibration is realized by taking the arc on the phased array calibration
block as the CalibRefPoint.

SoundPath calibration generally uses a test block with two known radius of curvature to
calibrate an angular phased array probe.

Fig. 4-3 VelCal screen

Steps:

1) Place the probe on the calibration block. See Fig. 4-4.

Fig. 4-4 Velocity and sound path calibration test block

2) In the "CalibRefPoint1"and "CalibRefPoint2" menu, set the radius value of 1,

2 (in this example, 50mm and 100mm). After the setting is completed, adjust
the "Gain" to make the echo amplitude around 80%. Move the probe back
and forth to get the highest echo of CalibRefPoint1.
4-10
Acquisition

3) Click the “Record” menu to set the value of “Record” to 1, which means to
record the echo position of CalibRefPoint1. Repeat step 2) to make the
AWaveEcho of CalibRefPoint2 pass through the center of the gate and get
the highest wave of CalibRefPoint2.

4) Click “Record” menu, which means to record the echo position of

CalibRefPoint2 and complete the calibration. If the calibration value of
MaterialVel is not accepted, click “ClearCalib” and repeat steps 2)~3).

4.2.3.2 SenCal

Take SenCal in the Fill area as an example. After entering SenCal:

1) After selecting the channel for calibration (take “Fusion(US)F4” as an example),

the remote control controls the PA probe to move to the vicinity of the calibration
reflector, and observe the gate echo in the A-view until the probe stops at the
highest echo position of the calibration reflector.

2) Adjust the [StartEle(T)] and [StartEle(R)] parameters until it is determined that

the echo amplitude under the current StartEle is the highest. Click “AdjustGain”
to automatically gain the echo amplitude to 80%. See Fig. 4-5.

Fig. 4-5 Adjusting StartEle

3) Click [DelayCal] to calibrate the calibration echo. After DelayCal, the values of S,
D, R, and P are updated. See the figure below, where DelayOffset P is set to 0.

4-11
Acquisition

Fig. 4-6 DelayCal

4) Adjust the remote control and control the probe to pass through the calibration
reflector and its adjacent upper and lower reflectors (in the same zone) to test
whether the requirements are met. (take the requirement that the adjacent
reflector is lower than the calibration reflector -6dB~-24dB as an example for
illustration). If the requirements are met, see the figure below, complete the
SenCal for this channel.

Fig. 4-7 SenCal verification of Fill area

4.3 Scan

Enter the Scan interface, and after the parameters are correctly synchronized to the
instrument, allow to start the scan, click the "Start" button, and start the scan. After the

Adjusting Drive Wheel

Appendix A Adjusting Drive Wheel

After a certain time of use, the sliding will appear after excessive wear and tear of friction

sheet on the Crawler. Then it is necessary to adjust the driving wheel to eliminate this

problem. The specific methods are as follows:

a) Loosen the four small screws around the drive wheel screws.

Fig. A-1 Loosen the screw

b) Unscrew the drive wheel screws completely.

Fig. A-2 Remove the screw

c) As usual practice for removing screws, use a tap to remove the remaining

anti-loose glue in the thread.

d) Screw the screw back on the driving wheel until the screw just touches the driving

wheel, then stop screwing.

e) Use a torque wrench, adjust to 2N.m, and tighten the screw (the handle will slip

f) after tightening).

g) If the problem still cannot be solved after the above adjustment, it indicates that

the friction plate is excessively worn and needs to be replaced. In this case, the

driving wheel needs to be removed from the crawler. The specific step is to

insert the disassembly tool into the groove ring of the driving wheel and tighten

the screw slowly in a clockwise direction. Then the driving wheel will gradually

detach from the axle.
