The great Fernando Amorsolo is widely celebrated mostly for his idealized paintings of idyllic settings and scenes,
but he is more than just a painter. A versatile artist, the National Artist was also a comics illustrator during the
early days of his artistic career. He was the one behind the hilarious illustrations in the Kiko and Angge comic
strip, written by Tagalog novelist Iñigo Ed Regalado and published in the weekly news magazine Telembang that
circulated from 1922 to 1924. The first regular comic strip in the Philippines, it delved on socio-political issues
during the 1920s. Amorsolo’s illustrations are highly satirical, in contrast with his romantic paintings, showing
another less-known yet noteworthy side of this master artist.

Imitation and faithfulness to exact human features are not the main
emphasis in his works but the medium’s materiality. Edades also focused
on portraying the simple everyday folk with proportions that resist
classical composition and measure. It is the subject’s presence that gets
strongly sensed by the viewer upon encountering his works.

Norma Belleza (b. 1939)
Gold Fish Vendor
C elebrated woman artist Norma Belleza’s works are feasts to the eyes, accessible
and abundant in patterns. Her earlier works have darker, somber colors, and
later on, she utilizes a brighter palette. Either way, her techniques exude vibrancy

oil on canvas that uplifts the viewer. The native features of her subjects are also notably distinct;
30” x 42” (76 cm x 107 cm)
her figures appear resilient in everyday survival. As local scenes are colorfully
P 100,000 depicted, the subjects—often peasants, women vendors, and potters, among other
common folk doing rural activities—show inner strength and joy.
These featured paintings are examples of Belleza’s works that showcase a vendor
scene with the archetypal local features. The patterns add more character, also her
signature color technique used which is something Belleza is usually known for.
Here, one sees her folk sensibilities and artistic efforts to depict Filipino women
through stylized figurations.

As one of the figureheads of Filipino Cubism, Romeo Tabuena elevated ordinary scenes to symphonic heights, largely due to
repeating forms and patterns that are central to his composition. In these modest yet striking pen on paper depictions of a
mother and child, one can clearly see his signature use of Cubism to a degree of utmost mastery. Each line, form, shape, and
figure is delicately rendered with Tabuena’s meticulous eye for detail wherein no aspect of the piece is without use nor place.

125 Tanay-born Tam Austria, who trained early under National Artist Carlos
Tam Austria (b. 1933) “Botong” Francisco in Angono, takes up this theme in his artistic career,
Untitled (Batya) along with other folk images and scenes. The subjects in this specific work
signed and dated 1973 (lower left) are highly detailed and rendered in the naturalness of their forms. Austria’s
oil on canvas works are celebrated as he steered away from the usual sentimental approach
24” x 30” (61 cm x 76 cm) on his subjects. His distinct depictions of anything folk in genre and level of
meticulousness in the portrayal of his subjects tap into the Filipino collective
P 40,000 consciousness. Many collectors describe his pieces as comprising of engaging
and visually appealing features. With an astute sense of composition, he has
enhanced themes of human interest as well.

Oscar Zalameda (1930 - 2010)
Portrait of a Lady
I n this portrait, Zalameda uses his signature abstractionist technique to create a
figurative depiction of his subject matter. This is a clear departure from the canons
of Filipino portraiture whose foundations can be found in the works of Luna, Hidalgo,
ca. 1970
signed (lower right) and Amorsolo. Instead, Zalameda draws upon both his signature stylistic disposition
oil on canvas
and his creative ingenuity as an artist to effectively produce a stunningly refreshing
33” x 28” (84 cm x 71 cm)
oeuvre. The artist’s use of color, which appropriately reflects his inclination for
P 120,000 abstraction, is masterfully applied in order to not only reflect tone or luminance, but
direction, flow, and balance as well. Though dappled with an overt amount of blue,
Zalameda’s meticulous eye maximizes the color’s potential by applying subtle shifts
of color that produces profound differences in form. From the woman’s scarf to her
dress and to the work’s background, nothing in Zalameda’s painting feels out of place
or forced. The work showcases Zalameda’s flexibility as a master of the arts and as a
creative luminary.

C ebuano artist Romulo Galicano’s landscape works, may it be tonal depictions of the local countryside or
places abroad, are undeniably picturesque and quiet yet powerful. A master of using oil and pastel and a
refined impressionistic style, Galicano is one of the Filipino artists who championed the said style and figurative
art in the Philippines, as his techniques are also influenced by French impressionists like Claude Monet who
captured the light and the subjects’ fleeting changes and moments in his art. Galicano is also a student of his
uncle, the Cebuano master artist Martino Abellana. The effects of light and shade are heightened in his works,
and one gets the sweet melancholic feel in his intimate views of nature rendered in its pictorial approximation.
Natural tones are modulated in its intensities and the overall composition evokes liveliness.

Abot Tala Foundation seeks to redefine school. This center serves teens ages 12 to 18 who may feel that regular
school is not a good fit for them and homeschoolers who are looking for a community. Classes are based on the
interests of the teens who have the freedom to choose which ones to join and have one-on-one mentoring sessions
each week. Abot Tala is a member of the Liberated Learners, a network of self-directed learning centers based on
the North Star model started by Ken Danford more than 20 years ago in Massachusetts. Abot Tala opened its doors in
Taguig on June 2019. Families who come to Abot Tala are surprised and grateful to find that a place like this exists.
Their teenager is able to find a community where they belong, thrive, find avenues of expression and learning apt for
their unique selves.

The alluring works of contemporary artist Jeho Bitancor are mature, personal commentaries on the Filipino
diaspora, societal themes, and collective experiences. Since his student days, his leaning toward quasi-surreal
imagery and the influence of social realism were already evident. His experiences in the advertising world also serve
as great training for honing his skills in conceptualization and mastering creative processes which are apparent in
the expressiveness of the images that pervade his works. Bitancor’s signature symbology blended with social realist
themes reflect the concerns of the current times, yet dark as his timely works are, Bitancor still imbues hope, often
through the presence of doves and the sense of flight of his figures from present plight.

ighly valued for its durability and
suitability for decorating spaces,
blue-and-white porcelains from
the Qing dynasty have highly impressive
shapes, bold and rich designs, and
artisanal executions of unique patterns.
Elaborate designs define the layout, as
recorded in the history of the celebrated
tradition of Chinese porcelain; in
composition, quintessentially Chinese
motifs were employed. Porcelain painters
of this period may be inspired by foreign
aesthetics yet still created their own
versions of oriented features.

Although officially produced by the luxury goods maker in 1984, the idea
and concept of the Kelly bag, Alfred Hitchcock has been credited with
bringing the handbag into the limelight. In 1954, Hitchcock allowed the
costume designer Edith Head to purchase Hermes accessories for the film
To Catch a Thief, starring Grace Kelly. According to Head, Kelly “fell in love”
with the bag. Within months of her 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier III, the
pregnant Princess of Monaco was photographed using the handbag to shield
her growing belly from the paparazzi. That photograph was featured in Life
magazine. Although the handbag instantly became known as the Kelly bag,
it was not officially renamed until 1977.
The Kelly base is made out of finely worked leather, giving it its elegant and
sophisticated finish, but is also complicated by a metal lock-and-key system
designed to give its owners ease-of-mind no matter the situation. The bag
also features a handle and must be held as such, showcasing its durability.

Hermes Bolide handbag in yellow epsom leather
P 140,000
For the Hermes aficionado, the Bolide has been a longtime favorite
and fashion staple. Created in 1923 and named after the 16th-century
word for “meteor,” Bolide was the first-ever handbag in which a zipper
is incorporated, becoming an iconic bag together with the Birkin and
Kelly. Highly functional and timeless in design, this Hermes Bolide
handbag is made of the popular Epsom leather with beautifully rigid
and structured features.
This leather type is highly resilient to dirt and scratches, suitable for everyday
use. The gleeful, vivid kind of yellow that this designer bag presents was
featured in Hermes’ 2013 Spring Summer collection. Initially, the Bolide was
named the “Bugatti” due to its large size yet still fits perfectly in spaces and
notable functionality, perfect for travel. It furthermore placed Hermes as a
top producer of classic bags that are designed with mobility in mind.

Cross-stitching is often regarded as one of the oldest known artforms in the world.
Traces of needlework can be found as far back as the 6th Century B.C., while
decorative embroidery documenting famous myths and stories adorned the walls
of historically important places such as the walls of ancient Egyptian palaces to
the sacred halls of European monasteries. Thus, the practice of cross-stitching and
needlework was seen as a noble affair and was passed on as such. This particular
piece does not only presuppose an elegant, educated, and dignified lineage, but
also showcases the artist’s meticulous craftsmanship but also their respect for their
culture’s history and aesthetic.

The iconic "mesa altar" or altar table has been a staple of local Filipino
design ever since the 1600s. The altar is often regarded as one of the
earliest examples of traditional Filipino furniture, with the earliest records
of it being linked to Ming dynasty table designs. These then morphed into
the more familiar styles during the end of the 17th century in order to
meet the demand of the growing number of churches along the Spanish
settlements. Despite this, the mesa altar still retained its oriental roots
through its carved legs and ball-and-claw feet. A high point of the mesa
altar was reached in the mid-1700s, wherein the tables were fashioned
out of black kamagong wood, an indigenous hardwood, with three to
five drawers, delicate pierce-work flanges and apron, which are then all
supported on cabriole legs over stretchers.
