Why Islam?

Close Relationship with the Creator

At the core of Islam is the focus of an individual’s personal relationship with

God, their Creator.

It encourages a believer to have sustained awareness of God which is a key to

lasting happiness.

Islam teaches that God is the source of peace.

By focusing on this important relationship and following God’s guidance,

believers will be able to acquire inner peace and tranquillity.

Seeking lasting happiness through other means, such as following one’s desires
or the accumulation of material possessions, will never fill the void we have.

This need can only be filled with the awareness of God.

True contentment is found in acknowledging and obeying the Creator: "Truly,

in remembering God do hearts find rest." (Quran 13:28).

The primary reason for this close relationship is that Muslims have a direct
connection with their Creator.

There is no intermediary, such as praying to, or through, others, in worshipping

God.
Positive Outlook on Life

Islam gives a person a clear perspective on the events that happen in their life,
both good and bad, as they are, in fact, tests from God.

It encourages a person to understand events in the context of the overall purpose

of life, which is to acknowledge God and obey Him.

He created humans with intellect and free will to test them as to who will
willfully choose to follow His guidance.

This life is an ultimate testing ground and although we cannot control

everything that happens to us, we can control how we react.

Islam encourages a person to focus on what is in their control, to be grateful to

God for blessings, and to be patient during hardships.
Patience or gratitude – this is the formula for a happy life.

Islam encourages the believer to remain free from the extremes of worldly
happiness that may cause one to forget God, and the extremes of sadness that
may cause one to lose hope and blame God.

By not being overly attached to the material world, a Muslim is empowered not
only to better handle any calamities, but to be beneficial and generous to
society.

This leads to a more balanced and optimistic outlook on life.

Pure and Clear Concept of God

Unlike other religions, Islam is not named after its founder or the community of
its birth.

Islam is an attributive title that signifies obedience to God, the Creator of the
Universe.

One of its main beauties is that it acknowledges the complete perfection,

greatness and uniqueness of God with absolutely no compromises.

This is reflected in Islam’s pure teachings of the attributes of God.

God is One and Unique:

 God has no partners, no equals and no rivals.

 God has no father, mother, sons, daughters or wives.
 God alone is worthy of all worship.
God is the All-Powerful:

 God has full authority and power over all things.

 Obedience to God does not increase His Power, nor does disobedience
decrease His power.
God is the Most High:

 There is nothing above or comparable to God.

 The attributes of God do not resemble that of His creation.
 No part of God is present in anyone or anything.
God is Perfect:

 God does not have any human limitations, such as resting on the seventh
day after He created the universe.
 God always maintains attributes of perfection and does not do anything to
compromise this perfection such as “becoming a man” as claimed by
other religions.
 God does not do ungodly acts, so if God became man and took on human
attributes, he would, necessarily, no longer be God.
Emphasizes Both Evidence and Faith

Islam is a religion in which faith is based on clear proof.

It encourages people to use their God given intelligence to think and ponder
over their life and the universe.

Although this life is a test, God has provided sufficient signs and guidance to
people who are open-minded and sincere to be able to acknowledge the truth.

"We (God) have certainly sent down Signs that make things clear: and God
guides whom He wills to the straight path."

- Quran 24:46

Unlike other religions, there are many clear proofs, signs and miracles that the
book of Islam, The Quran, is from God.
The Quran:
 Is free from any errors or contradictions, despite it being revealed over a period of 23 years.
 Is preserved, word-for-word, since it was revealed in its original Arabic
language, unlike other scriptures which have been distorted, changed or
lost.
 Contains a simple, pure and universal message that has a profound effect
on all those who are sincerely searching for the truth.
 Contains a unique and inimitable style of language that is universally
known as the pinnacle of Arabic eloquence and linguistic beauty – yet the
Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) who was
known to be illiterate.
 Contains many amazing scientific facts which have only been discovered
recently, despite being revealed over 1400 years ago.

The most rational explanation for the many unique and miraculous aspects of
the Quran is that it cannot be from other than God.
Forgiveness of Sins

Islam encourages a balance between hope in God’s mercy and fear of His
punishment – both of which are required to lead a positive and humble life.

We are born sinless but have the free will to commit sins.

God created us and knows we are imperfect and commit sins, but the key is how
we react to committing those mistakes.

"Do not despair of God’s mercy; He will forgive you of all your sins."

Quran 39:53

Islam teaches that God is the Most Merciful and will forgive and pardon those
who sincerely want to repent.

The beautiful steps for repentance include being sincere, remorseful, refraining
from committing the sin as well as having the intention not to repeat it.

Islam encourages a continuous process of self-development and self-

purification.

This process happens directly between the individual and God – there is no need
for sins to be shared or “confessed” to a righteous person/priest.

Furthermore, God does not need to sacrifice himself to forgive sins, nor is
anyone “born into sin”.
Accountability and Ultimate Justice

Islam teaches that God is the Most Just and that each person will be held
responsible for their own actions on the Day of Judgement.

Each person is accountable, as they have freedom of choice and intelligence to

discern between right and wrong.

It is an absolute demand of justice that there be a Day of Judgement where

every person is rewarded or punished, otherwise life would be unjust as not
everyone receives true justice in this world.

Islam teaches that ultimately we will be judged for how well we fulfilled our
responsibilities and exercised our free will.
We will be judged by God, the All Knowing and All Wise, who knows and sees
everything we do.

This encourages a more harmonious society and gives people contentment

knowing that justice will ultimately prevail.
Practical and Balanced Way of Life

Islam provides the right balance between faith and action, as both are required
for a stable life.

It provides guidance for all situations and circumstances.

It is a practical religion with practical acts of worship that are designed to fulfil
the spiritual, physical, psychological and social needs of people.
Examples of practical acts of worship that have numerous benefits include:

 The five daily prayers – Enriches the soul by satisfying the spiritual need
of being in regular contact with God (especially in today’s busy lifestyle);
makes one humble by bowing and prostrating to God; removes any
barriers/pride/racism between believers praying in congregation; helps
one refrain from committing sins given the person stands regularly before
God.
 The obligatory charity – Purifies a person from selfishness; encourages
empathy to the poor; reminds one of the blessings of God; helps reduce
poverty; bridges the gap between rich and poor.
 The fasting in Ramadan – Promotes spiritual self-purification, self-
restraint and growth; scientifically proven health benefits; empathy and
awareness of those less fortunate; trains people to acquire the habit of
obeying God.
 The pilgrimage – Unites people of every colour, race, status and
nationality, as pilgrims wear simple and similar clothing, while
performing a range of good deeds in congregation.

Given that Islam is from God, every command found in the religion is
ultimately good and beneficial to the individual and society when practiced
correctly. Quranic examples include being honest, forgiving, truthful, kind to
one’s wife, patient, fair, moderate, modest, sincere, and respecting parents,
family and the elderly.

There are also many principles in the teachings of Islam that prevent or reduce
many of the individual and social ills facing the world today.
Universal and Timeless Message

Islam has a message that applies to all people at all times, from the creation of
Adam up until the Day of Judgement.

It is applicable today as it always has been.

God is accessible to everyone.

People may distinguish themselves and earn God’s favor through belief and
righteous actions only – not through race, wealth, gender, nationality or social
class.
Conclusion

Islam’s timeless and beautiful message is the same message of all Prophets,
including Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them
all).

They all called their people to “Submit to the One True God” which, in Arabic,
means to become a “Muslim”.

This submission to God enables one to fullfill the purpose of life by

acknowledging the greatness of God and sincerely worshipping him alone.

In doing so, one will acquire the countless benefits of Islam mentioned above.
Who Is Muhammad (‫?)ﷺ‬
“Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example to
follow for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and remembers
Allah much.”
- Quran 33:21

Muslims believe that Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the final Prophet in a
long chain of Prophets sent to call the people to the obedience and worship of
God alone ('Allah' in Arabic). Some of these Prophets include Adam, Noah,
Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon and Jesus
(peace be upon them all).

Just as Moses (peace be upon him) was sent with the Torah (the original
uncorrupted revelation sent to Moses) and Jesus (peace be upon him) with the
Gospel (the original, uncorrupted revelation – not the present-day versions),
Muslims believe that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was sent with the Qur’an
to demonstrate how its teachings should be applied.

The Prophet’s (peace be upon him) wife, ‘A’isha, was once asked to describe
the Prophet (peace be upon him), and she replied that “his character was a
reflection of the Quran” (Muslim, 40), meaning he meticulously implemented
the noble teachings of the Qur’an into his daily life. We will demonstrate how
he translated these noble teachings into noble actions.
Mission of Mercy

“And We (God) have not sent you (Muhammad) except as a mercy for
mankind.”

Qur’an 21:107

As well as calling people to pray, fast and give charity, the Prophet (peace be
upon him) taught that one’s faith in God should also affect one’s treatment of
others. He said: "The best of you are they who have the best character."

Many sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) emphasize the relationship
between belief and action, for example: "Whoever believes in Allah and the
Last Day, should not hurt his neighbor, and whoever believes in Allah and
the Last Day, should serve his guest generously, and whoever believes in
Allah and the Last Day, should speak what is good or keep quiet."
The final Messenger (Peace be upon him) taught humans to show mercy and to
respect each other: "He who does not show mercy to others, will not be
shown mercy."

In another narration, some people requested the Prophet (peace be upon him) to
invoke God to punish the disbelievers but he replied: "I have not been sent as
one to curse but as a mercy."
Forgiveness

Let them forgive and overlook: do you not wish that Allah should forgive you?
For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Qur’an 24:22

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was the most forgiving of all people and the
kindest. If someone abused him, he would forgive him, and the harsher a person
was, the more patient he would become. He was extremely lenient and
forgiving, especially when he had the upper hand and the power to retaliate.

Muhammad (peace be upon him) was all for forgiveness and no amount of
crime or aggression against him was too great to be forgiven by him. He was the
best example of forgiveness and kindness, as mentioned in the following verse
of the Qur’an: “Keep to forgiveness (O Muhammad), and enjoin kindness,
and turn away from the ignorant." (Al-Qur’an 7:199)
Equality

Indeed the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of
you.

Qur’an 49:13

In the following sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he taught that all
humans are equal in the sight of God:

"All humanity is from Adam and Adam is from clay. There is no superiority for
an Arab over a non-Arab, nor for a black over a white; except through piety."

"God does not judge you according to your appearance and your wealth, but
He looks at your hearts and looks into your deeds."

It is related that once a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) called
another companion in an offensive way, “Son of a black woman!” The Prophet
(peace be upon him), became angry and replied, “Do you condemn him
because of the blackness of his mother? You still have within you traces of
ignorance from the pre-Islamic period.”
Tolerance

Good deeds and evil deeds are not equal. Repel evil with what is best, then he
with whom you had enmity shall become as a loyal friend.

Qur’an 41:343

“You should not do evil to those who do evil to you, but you should deal
with them with forgiveness and kindness.” This is how the final Messenger of
God (peace be upon him) reacted to personal attacks and abuse.

Islamic sources include a number of instances where the Prophet (peace be upon
him) had the opportunity to take revenge upon those who wronged him, but
refrained from doing so.

He taught man to exercise patience in the face of adversity: “The strong is not

the one who overcomes people by his strength, but the strong is the one
who controls himself while in anger.”

Practising patience and tolerance does not mean that a Muslim should be a
passivist and not defend himself in case of attack. Prophet Mohammad (peace
be upon him) stated that, “Do not wish to meet the enemy, but when you
meet (face) the enemy, be patient (i.e. stand firm when facing the enemy).”
Gentleness

By the grace of Allah, you are gentle towards the people; if you had been harsh
and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you.

Qur’an 3:159

A companion who served Muhammad (peace be upon him) for ten years said
that Muhammad (peace be upon him) was always gentle in his dealings with
him.“When I did something, he never questioned my manner of doing it;
and when I did not do something, he never questioned my failure to do it.
He was the friendliest of all men.”

On one occasion, the wife of the Prophet (peace be upon him) reacted angrily
after being insulted by a person.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) advised her “Be gentle and calm, O ‘Aisha,
as Allah likes gentleness in all affairs.”
He also said: “Show gentleness! For if gentleness is found in something, it
beautifies it, and when it is taken out from anything, it makes it deficient.”
Humbleness

And the servants of The Most Gracious (God) are those who walk on the earth
in humbleness, and when the ignorant address them, they say: ‘Peace.’

Qur’an 25:63

The Prophet (peace be upon him) used to prevent people from standing up for
him out of respect. He used to sit wherever there was a place available in an
assembly and never sought a prominent or elevated place. He never wore
anything to distinguish himself from his companions or appear in higher rank
than them. He used to mix with the poor and the needy; he used to sit with the
elderly and support the widows. People who did not know him could not tell
him apart from the rest of the crowd.

Addressing his companions, he said: “Allah has revealed to me, that you

must be humble. No one should boast over one another, and no one should
oppress another.”

Such was his humbleness that he was fearful of being worshipped, a privilege
only befitting God:

"Do not exceed bounds in praising me as the Christians do in praising Jesus,

Son of Mary. I am only the Lord’s servant; then call me the Servant of Allah
and His Messenger."
The Ideal Husband

Indeed you (O Muhammad) are on an exalted standard of character.

Qur’an 68:4

What has preceded is only a glimpse of how Muhammad (peace be upon him)
lived his life. The examples of kindness and mercy mentioned may come as a
surprise to some people given the portrayal of Islam in the media and its
constant misrepresentation.

Not only was he a devoted husband, he also encouraged his companions to

follow his example: "The most perfect of the believers in faith are the best
of them in morals. And the best among them are those who are best to their
wives."
"Do not exceed bounds in praising me as the Christians do in praising Jesus,
Son of Mary. I am only the Lord’s servant; then call me the Servant of Allah
and His Messenger."
The Ideal Example

Indeed you (O Muhammad) are on an exalted standard of character.

Qur’an 68:4

What has preceded is only a glimpse of how Muhammad (peace be upon him)
lived his life. The examples of kindness and mercy mentioned may come as a
surprise to some people given the portrayal of Islam in the media and its
constant misrepresentation.

It is important when trying to understand Islam that one goes directly to its
sources: The Qur’an, and the sayings and actions of Prophet Muhammad (peace
be upon him), and that anyone does not judge Islam based on the errant actions
of a few Muslims.
Comments from Non-Muslims

Mahatma K Gandhi, a major political and spiritual leader of the Indian

independence movement, remarked:

“It was the rigid simplicity, the utter self-effacement of the Prophet, the
scrupulous regard for his pledges, his intense devotion to his friends and
followers, his intrepidity, his fearlessness, his absolute trust in God and in his
own mission. These and not the sword carried everything before them and
surmounted every obstacle.”

George Bernard Shaw, the British playwright, declared: “The world is in dire

need of a man with the mind of Muhammad; religious people in the middle
Ages, due to their ignorance and prejudice, had pictured him in a very dark way
as they used to consider him the enemy of Christianity. But after looking into
the story of this man I found it to be an amazing and a miraculous one, and I
came to the conclusion that he was never an enemy of Christianity, and must be
called instead the saviour of humanity. In my opinion, if he was to be given
control over the world today, he would solve our problems and secure the peace
and happiness which the world is longing for.”
Who Is Jesus(‫?)عليه السالم‬
“Verily, the likeness of Jesus before Allah is the likeness of Adam. He created
him from dust, then (He) said to him: “Be!” and he was.” - Quran 3:58
Muslims Love Jesus(‫)عليه السالم‬

Jesus is a figure who is loved and revered by billions of people the world over,
yet there is much confusion surrounding the status of this colossal personality.
Muslims and Christians both hold Jesus in high regard but view him in very
different ways.

This pamphlet aims to clarify the issues surrounding Jesus: Was Jesus God, or
was he sent by God? Who was the real historical Jesus?
"Jesus as God"

Some Christians claim that “Jesus is God” or part of a trinity – that he is the
incarnation of God on earth, and that God took on a human form. However,
according to the Bible, Jesus was born, ate, slept, prayed and had limited
knowledge – all attributes not befitting God. God has attributes of perfection
whereas Man is the opposite. How can anything be two complete opposites
simultaneously?

Islam teaches that God is always perfect. To believe that God became a man is
to claim that God is or was (at some point in time), imperfect. A Christian must
ask him/herself, does the idea of a god who was once a weak helpless child, one
who could not survive without food, drink or sleep, be the same Almighty God
described in the Old Testament? Surely not.

One may ask, "If God can do anything, why can’t he become a man?" By
definition, God does not do ungodly acts. God does not do anything that would
make Him, something other than God. If God became man and took on human
attributes, he would, necessarily, no longer be God.

Some ambiguous verses of the Bible can be applied erroneously to show that
Jesus is in some way divine. But if we look at the clear direct verses of the
Bible, we see again and again that Jesus is being referred to as an extraordinary
human being and nothing more. The Bible contains many verses in which Jesus
speaks and behaves as if God is a separate being to himself. For example:
 Jesus “fell on his face and prayed.” (Matthew 26:39) If Jesus was God,
then would a God fall on his face and pray? And who would he be
praying to?
 The Bible calls Jesus a Prophet (Matthew 21:10-11), so how could Jesus
be God and be God’s Prophet at the same time?
 Jesus said, “I am going to the Father, because the Father is greater
than me.” (John 14:28)
 Jesus said "I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my
God, and your God." (John 20:17) If Jesus was God, then why would he
say, “to my God, and your God,” and who was he ascending to?

If Jesus was God, he would have clearly told people to worship him, and there
would be clear verses in the Bible stating this; yet he did the opposite and
disapproved anyone worshipping him: “And in vain they worship me.”
(Matthew 15:9)
"Son of God"

Some Christians claim that Jesus is the Son of God. What does this actually
mean? Surely God is far removed from having a physical and literal son.
Humans have human children. Cats have kittens. What does it mean for God to
have a child?

Rather than being taken literally, we find the term “Son of God” is

symbolically used in the earliest biblical languages for a “righteous person”,
and has been used for David, Solomon and Israel – not exclusively for
Jesus: “…Israel is my firstborn son,” (Exodus 4:22). In fact, anyone who is
righteous is referred to as God’s ‘son’ : “All who are led by God’s Spirit are
God’s sons and daughters.” (Romans 8:14)

"It is not befitting to (the majesty of) Allah that He should beget a son. He is
Perfect and Flawless! When He determines a matter, He only says to it, ‘Be’
and it is."

Quran 19:35
"Father and Lord"

In the same way, when the word ‘Father’ is used to refer to God it shouldn’t be
taken literally. Instead, it’s a way of saying God is the creator, sustainer and
supreme master of all. There are many verses for us to understand this symbolic
meaning of the word ‘Father’, for example: “One God and Father of
all.” (Ephesians 4:6)
Also, Jesus was sometimes called ‘Lord’ by the disciples. This term is used in
the original languages of the Bible, for God as well as for people who are held
in high esteem. For example, in the Greek New Testament, the term kyrios is
used for both ‘Lord’ as well as to name the owner of the vineyard (Matthew
20:8), and the master who beat the disobedient servant (Luke 20.42-47).

In other parts of the Bible, Jesus is even called a ‘servant’ of God by the
disciples: “The God of our fathers, has glorified his servant Jesus.” (Acts
3:13) This clearly shows that when ‘Lord’ is used to refer to Jesus, it is a title of
respect, not of divinity.

Attempts are made to explain the complexity of the above issues of the
nature of God and the nature of Jesus, which can be quite confusing or
unsatisfying. However, the key point to ponder is: Why would God make it
so hard to understand? How do these complicated teachings compare with
the simple, clear and pure teachings of the concept of God in Islam?
Jesus: The Prophet

In Judaism, Jesus (peace be upon him) is denied as the Messiah. This is in stark
contrast to Christianity where he is worshipped as a deity, or the son of God.
Islam takes the middle ground and acknowledges Jesus as an honourable
Prophet and Messenger of God, as well as the Messiah, but Muslims do not
worship him – as worship is for God alone who created Jesus and everything
that exists.

"(Jesus) said, ‘Indeed, I am the slave of Allah (God). He has given me the
Scripture and made me a Prophet.’"

Quran 19:30
Miraculous Birth

According to the Quran, the Angel Gabriel was sent to Mary, the noble virgin,
in the form of a man, informing her of a child who was to be born miraculously
without a father.

“He (Angel Gabriel) said, ‘I am only a messenger of your Lord to announce to

you the gift of a righteous son.’ She said, ‘How shall I have a son, seeing that
no man has touched me, and I am not unchaste?’ He said, ‘Thus (it will be).
Your Lord says, “It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people
and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter already decreed.” “

Quran 19:19-21
Some claim that his miraculous birth is evidence of Jesus’ divinity. However,
Jesus was not the first to come into existence without a father, as Prophet Adam
(peace be upon him) before him had neither a father nor mother. God says:

“The likeness of Jesus before God is as that of Adam; He created him (Adam)
from dust, then said to him: ‘Be’, and he was. This is the truth from your Lord,
so be not of the disputers.”

Quran 3:59-60

If Jesus is worshipped due to having no father, then surely Adam is more

deserving of worship since he was created without either parent.
Miracles of Jesus

Jesus was miraculously conceived with no father and also performed great
miracles by the will and permission of God. He spoke as a baby in the cradle to
defend his mother against the people who accused her of fornication. The Quran
also states that Jesus gave life to the dead, cured the leper and the blind – all by
the will of God.

The fact that Jesus (peace be upon him) performed miracles does not mean that
he was anything more than a humble servant of God. In fact, many Messengers
performed miracles, including Noah, Moses and Muhammad (may peace be
upon them all) and these miracles only took place by the permission of God, so
as to demonstrate the authenticity of the Messenger.
Message of Jesus

The Prophets of the Old Testament such as Abraham, Noah and Jonah never
preached that God is part of a Trinity, and did not believe in Jesus as their
savior. Their message was simple: there is one God and He alone deserves your
worship. It is not logical for God to send Prophets for thousands of years with
the same essential message, only to suddenly change it, claim that He is now a
part of a trinity, and to stipulate the belief in the divinity of Jesus to be saved.

The truth is, Jesus preached the same message as all the Prophets in the Old
Testament. There is a passage in the Bible that really emphasizes this core
message. A man came to Jesus and asked, “Which is the first commandment
of all?” Jesus answered, “The first of all the commandments is, ‘Hear, O
Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.’ “(Mark 12:28-29) So, the greatest
commandment, the most important belief according to Jesus, is that God is one.
If Jesus was God he would have said, ‘I am God, worship me.’ Instead, he
merely repeated a verse from the Old Testament confirming that God is One.
This aligns with the mission of Jesus, as taught in Islam, where Jesus was sent
to the Children of Israel to confirm the message of the past Prophets – to believe
in the One True God.

“And when Jesus brought clear proofs, he said, ‘… Indeed, God – He is my

Lord and your Lord. So worship Him alone. This is the only Straight Path.’ ”

Quran 43:63-64

As an honorable obedient Messenger of God, Jesus submitted willingly to

God’s commands. As such, he was a “Muslim” – which refers to anyone that
submits to the will and commandments of God.
Jesus in Islam

Jesus was as an honorable Prophet sent by God to call to the worship of God
alone. This is evident in the Bible and confirmed by the Quran. The Islamic
belief about Jesus explains who the real Jesus was, whilst maintaining the pure
belief about God and His complete Greatness, Uniqueness and Perfection.

We invite you to look further and investigate Islam. It is not just another
religion. It is the same message preached by Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and
Muhammad – may peace be upon all of them. Islam means ‘submission to God’
and is a natural and complete way of life that encourages one to give due
attention to their relationship with God and His creation. Islam teaches that God
is the All-Just and All-Merciful and does not need to sacrifice himself to forgive
sins nor is anyone “born into sin”. God judges everyone based on their own
deeds and everyone is accountable for their own actions.

Islam teaches us to love and respect all the Prophets of God, but loving and
respecting them does not mean worshipping them because worship is due only
to God. Acknowledging Jesus as a Prophet of God and becoming a Muslim does
not mean changing or losing your Christian identity. It is about going back to
the original and pure teachings of Jesus.

God supported His last Prophet Muhammad with many miracles and much
evidence which proved that he is a true Prophet sent by God. Also, God
supported His last revealed book, the Holy Quran, with many miracles that
prove that this Quran is the literal word of God, revealed by Him, and that it
was not authored by any human being. This chapter discusses some of this
evidence.
(1) The Scientific Miracles in the Holy Quran

The Quran is the literal word of God, which He revealed to His Prophet
Muhammad (‫ )ﷺ‬through the Angel Gabriel. It was memorized by Muhammad ,
who then dictated it to his Companions. They, in turn, memorized it, wrote it
down, and reviewed it with the Prophet Muhammad . Moreover, the Prophet
Muhammad reviewed the Quran with the Angel Gabriel once each year and
twice in the last year of his life. From the time the Quran was revealed, until this
day, there has always been a huge number of Muslims who have memorized all
of the Quran, letter by letter. Some of them have even been able to memorize all
of the Quran by the age of ten. Not one letter of the Quran has been changed
over the centuries.

The Quran, which was revealed fourteen centuries ago, mentioned facts only
recently discovered or proven by scientists. This proves without doubt that the
Quran must be the literal word of God, revealed by Him to the Prophet
Muhammad , and that the Quran was not authored by Muhammad or by any
other human being. This also proves that Muhammad is truly a prophet sent by
God. It is beyond reason that anyone fourteen hundred years ago would have
known these facts discovered or proven only recently with advanced equipment
and sophisticated scientific methods. Some examples follow.
A) The Quran on Human Embryonic Development:

In the Holy Quran, God speaks about the stages of man’s embryonic
development:

We created man from an extract of clay. Then We made him as a drop in a place
of settlement, firmly fixed. Then We made the drop into an alaqah (leech,
suspended thing, and blood clot), then We made the alaqah into a mudghah
(chewed substance)... 1 (Quran, 23:12-14)

Literally, the Arabic word alaqah has three meanings: (1) leech, (2) suspended
thing, and (3) blood clot.
In comparing a leech to an embryo in the alaqah stage, we find similarity
between the two2 as we can see in figure 1. Also, the embryo at this stage
obtains nourishment from the blood of the mother, similar to the leech, which
feeds on the blood of others.3

Figure 1: Drawings illustrating the similarities in appearance between a leech

and a human embryo at the alaqah stage. (Leech drawing from Human
Development as Described in the Quran and Sunnah, Moore and others, p. 37,
modified from Integrated Principles of Zoology, Hickman and others. Embryo
drawing from The Developing Human, Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 73.)

The second meaning of the word alaqah is “suspended thing.” This is what we
can see in figures 2 and 3, the suspension of the embryo, during the alaqah
stage, in the womb of the mother.

Figure 2: We can see in this diagram the suspension of an embryo during the
alaqah stage in the womb (uterus) of the mother. (The Developing Human,
Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 66.) (Click on the image to enlarge it.)

Figure 3: In this photomicrograph, we can see the suspension of an embryo

(marked B) during the alaqah stage (about 15 days old) in the womb of the
mother. The actual size of the embryo is about 0.6 mm. (The Developing
Human, Moore, 3rd ed., p. 66, from Histology, Leeson and Leeson.)
The third meaning of the word alaqah is “blood clot.” We find that the external
appearance of the embryo and its sacs during the alaqah stage is similar to that
of a blood clot. This is due to the presence of relatively large amounts of blood
present in the embryo during this stage4 (see figure 4). Also during this stage,
the blood in the embryo does not circulate until the end of the third week.5
Thus, the embryo at this stage is like a clot of blood.

Figure 4: Diagram of the primitive cardiovascular system in an embryo during

the alaqah stage. The external appearance of the embryo and its sacs is similar
to that of a blood clot, due to the presence of relatively large amounts of blood
present in the embryo. (The Developing Human, Moore, 5th ed., p. 65.) (Click

So the three meanings of the word alaqah correspond accurately to the

descriptions of the embryo at the alaqah stage.

The next stage mentioned in the verse is the mudghah stage.  The Arabic

word mudghah means “chewed substance.”  If one were to take a piece of gum
and chew it in his or her mouth and then compare it with an embryo at
the mudghah stage, we would conclude that the embryo at the mudghah stage
acquires the appearance of a chewed substance.  This is because of the somites
at the back of the embryo that “somewhat resemble teethmarks in a chewed
substance.”6 (see figures 5 and 6).
Figure 5: Photograph of an embryo at the mudghah stage (28 days old). The
embryo at this stage acquires the appearance of a chewed substance, because the
somites at the back of the embryo somewhat resemble teeth marks in a chewed
substance. The actual size of the embryo is 4 mm. (The Developing Human,
Moore and Persaud, 5th ed., p. 82, from Professor Hideo Nishimura, Kyoto
University, Kyoto, Japan.)

Figure 6: When comparing the appearance of an embryo at the mudghah stage

with a piece of gum that has been chewed, we find similarity between the two.

the back of the embryo that look like teeth marks. (The Developing Human,

How could Muhammad (‫)ﷺ‬ have possibly known all this 1400 years ago, when
scientists have only recently discovered this using advanced equipment and
powerful microscopes which did not exist at that time?  Hamm and
Leeuwenhoek were the first scientists to observe human sperm cells
(spermatozoa) using an improved microscope in 1677 (more than 1000 years
after Muhammad ).  They mistakenly thought that the sperm cell contained a
miniature preformed human being that grew when it was deposited in the
female genital tract.7

Professor Emeritus Keith L. Moore8 is one of the world’s most prominent

scientists in the fields of anatomy and embryology and is the author of the book
entitled The Developing Human, which has been translated into eight
languages.  This book is a scientific reference work and was chosen by a special
committee in the United States as the best book authored by one person.  Dr.
Keith Moore is Professor Emeritus of Anatomy and Cell Biology at the
University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada.  There, he was Associate Dean of
Basic Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine and for 8 years was the Chairman of
the Department of Anatomy.  In 1984, he received the most distinguished award
presented in the field of anatomy in Canada, the J.C.B. Grant Award from the
Canadian Association of Anatomists.  He has directed many international
associations, such as the Canadian and American Association of Anatomists and
the Council of the Union of Biological Sciences.

In 1981, during the Seventh Medical Conference in Dammam, Saudi Arabia,

Professor Moore said: “It has been a great pleasure for me to help clarify
statements in the Quran about human development.  It is clear to me that these
statements must have come to Muhammad from God, because almost all of this
knowledge was not discovered until many centuries later.  This proves to me
that Muhammad must have been a messenger of God.”9  (To view the
RealPlayer video of this comment click here ).

Consequently, Professor Moore was asked the following question: “Does this
mean that you believe that the Quran is the word of God?”  He replied: “I find
no difficulty in accepting this.”10

During one conference, Professor Moore stated: “....Because the staging of

human embryos is complex, owing to the continuous process of change during
development, it is proposed that a new system of classification could be
developed using the terms mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah (what
Muhammad  said, did, or approved of).  The proposed system is simple,
comprehensive, and conforms with present embryological knowledge.  The
intensive studies of the Quran and hadeeth (reliably transmitted reports by the
Prophet Muhammad’s  companions of what he said, did, or approved of) in the
last four years have revealed a system for classifying human embryos that is
amazing since it was recorded in the seventh century A.D.  Although Aristotle,
the founder of the science of embryology, realized that chick embryos
developed in stages from his studies of hen’s eggs in the fourth century B.C., he
did not give any details about these stages.  As far as it is known from the
history of embryology, little was known about the staging and classification of
human embryos until the twentieth century.  For this reason, the descriptions of
the human embryo in the Quran cannot be based on scientific knowledge in the
seventh century.  The only reasonable conclusion is: these descriptions were
revealed to Muhammad from God.  He could not have known such details
because he was an illiterate man with absolutely no scientific training.”11

B) The Quran on Mountains:

A book entitled Earth is a basic reference textbook in many universities around

the world.  One of its two authors is Professor Emeritus Frank Press.  He was
the Science Advisor to former US President Jimmy Carter, and for 12 years was
the President of the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC. His book
says that mountains have underlying roots.1  These roots are deeply embedded
in the ground, thus, mountains have a shape like a peg (see figures 7, 8, and 9).
Figure 7: Mountains have deep roots under the surface of the ground. (Earth,
Press and Siever, p. 413.)

Figure 8: Schematic section. The mountains, like pegs, have deep roots
embedded in the ground. (Anatomy of the Earth, Cailleux, p. 220.) (Click on the
image to enlarge it.)

Figure 9: Another illustration shows how the mountains are peg-like in shape,
due to their deep roots. (Earth Science, Tarbuck and Lutgens, p. 158.) (Click on
the image to enlarge it.)

This is how the Quran has described mountains. God has said in the Quran:

Have We not made the earth as a bed, and the mountains as pegs? (Quran, 78:6-
7)

Modern earth sciences have proven that mountains have deep roots under the
surface of the ground (see figure 9) and that these roots can reach several times
their elevations above the surface of the ground.2 So the most suitable word to
describe mountains on the basis of this information is the word ‘peg,’ since
most of a properly set peg is hidden under the surface of the ground. The history
of science tells us that the theory of mountains having deep roots was
introduced only in the latter half of the nineteenth century.3

Mountains also play an important role in stabilizing the crust of the earth.4 They
hinder the shaking of the earth. God has said in the Quran:
And He has set firm mountains in the earth so that it would not shake with
you... (Quran, 16:15)

Likewise, the modern theory of plate tectonics holds that mountains work as
stabilizers for the earth. This knowledge about the role of mountains as
stabilizers for the earth has just begun to be understood in the framework of
plate tectonics since the late 1960’s.5

Could anyone during the time of the Prophet Muhammad have known of the
true shape of mountains? Could anyone imagine that the solid massive
mountain which he sees before him actually extends deep into the earth and has
a root, as scientists assert? A large number of books of geology, when
discussing mountains, only describe that part which is above the surface of the
earth. This is because these books were not written by specialists in geology.
However, modern geology has confirmed the truth of the Quranic verses.

eeshvar ne apane antim paigambar muhammad ko kaee chamatkaaron aur kaee sabooton ke saath
samarthan diya jo saabit karate hain ki vah eeshvar dvaara bheje gae ek sachche paigambar hain.
saath hee, eeshvar ne apanee antim prakat pustak, pavitr kuraan ka samarthan kiya, kaee

kuraan eeshvar ka shaabdik shabd hai, jise unhonne apane paigambar muhammad (shly allh ʿlyh

quraan, jo chaudah shataabdiyon pahale avatarit hua tha, ne haal hee mein vaigyaanikon dvaara

ka shaabdik shabd hona chaahie, jo usake dvaara paigambar muhammad ko prakat kiya gaya tha, aur
yah ki kuraan muhammad ya kisee any insaan dvaara nahin likha gaya tha. isase yah bhee siddh hota

e) maanav bhroon vikaas par kuraan:

pavitr kuraan mein, bhagavaan manushy ke bhroon ke vikaas ke charanon ke baare mein baat karate
hain:

hamane insaan ko mittee ke ras se paida kiya. phir hamane use bastee kee jagah mein ek boond kee
tarah mazabootee se jama diya. phir hamane ek boond ko alaqaah (jonk, nilambit cheez, aur khoon
ka thakka) bana diya, phir hamane alaqah ko mudgah (chabaaya hua padaarth) bana diya ... 1
(kuraan, 23:12-14)

arabee shabd alaqaah ke teen arth hain: (1) jonk, (2) latakee huee cheez, aur (3) khoon ka thakka.

alaqaah charan mein ek jonk kee tulana ek bhroon se karane par, ham donon ke beech samaanata
paate hain jaisa ki ham chitr 1 mein dekh sakate hain. saath hee, is charan mein bhroon jonk ke
samaan maan ke rakt se poshan praapt karata hai, jo jonk ke samaan hota hai, jo bhojan karata hai.
doosaron ka khoon.3

chitr 1: alaqaah avastha mein ek jonk aur ek maanav bhroon ke beech dikhane mein samaanata ko
darshaane vaale chitr. (kuraan aur sunnat mein varnit maanav vikaas se leech draing, moor aur any,
prshth 37, joolojee, hikamain aur any ke ekeekrt siddhaanton se sanshodhit. vikaasasheel maanav,
moor aur parsaud se bhroon chitran, 5vaan sanskaran, pee. 73.)

alaqaah shabd ka doosara arth "nilambit cheez" hai. yah vahee hai jo ham aankade 2 aur 3 mein
dekh sakate hain, maan ke garbh mein alaqaah charan ke dauraan bhroon ka nilamban.
chitr 2: ham is chitr mein maan ke garbh (garbhaashay) mein alaqaah charan ke dauraan ek bhroon
ke nilamban ko dekh sakate hain. (da devalaping hyooman, moor end parsaud, 5vaan sanskaran,
prshth 66.) (chitr ko bada karane ke lie us par klik karen.)

chitr 3: is photomaikrograaph mein, ham maan ke garbh mein alaqaah charan (lagabhag 15 din
puraana) ke dauraan ek bhroon (chihnit bee) ke nilamban ko dekh sakate hain. bhroon ka vaastavik
aakaar lagabhag 0.6 mimee hai. (da devalaping hyooman, moor, teesara sanskaran, prshth 66,
histolojee, leesan aur lesan se.)

alaqaah shabd ka teesara arth "rakt ka thakka" hai. ham paate hain ki alaqaah avastha ke dauraan
bhroon aur usakee thailiyon kee baaharee upasthiti rakt ke thakke ke samaan hotee hai. yah is
charana4 ke dauraan bhroon mein maujood apekshaakrt badee maatra mein rakt kee upasthiti ke
kaaran hota hai (chitr 4 dekhen). saath hee is avastha ke dauraan, teesare saptaah ke ant tak bhroon
mein rakt ka sanchaar nahin hota hai. is prakaar, is avastha mein bhroon rakt ke thakke kee tarah
hota hai.

chitr 4: alaqaah avastha ke dauraan ek bhroon mein aadim hrday pranaalee ka aarekh. bhroon mein
maujood apekshaakrt badee maatra mein rakt kee upasthiti ke kaaran bhroon aur usake thailon kee
baaharee upasthiti rakt ke thakke ke samaan hotee hai. (da devalaping hyooman, moor, 5vaan
sanskaran, prshth 65.) (chitr ko bada karane ke lie us par klik karen.)

isalie alaqaah shabd ke teen arth sateek roop se alaqaah avastha mein bhroon ke vivaran ke anuroop
hain.

chhand mein ullikhit agala charan mudgha charan hai. arabee shabd mudgha ka arth hai "chabaaya
hua padaarth." yadi koee gond ka ek tukada lekar use apane munh mein chabaata hai aur phir
usakee tulana mudgha avastha ke bhroon se karata hai, to ham is nishkarsh par pahunchenge ki
mudgha avastha mein bhroon chabaaya hua padaarth jaisa prateet hota hai. yah bhroon ke peechhe
sthit somaits ke kaaran hota hai jo "kuchh had tak chabaane vaale padaarth mein daanton ke
nishaan jaisa dikhata hai." 6 (chitr 5 aur 6 dekhen).
