Assignment-1 (Formulation and Graphical Method)

This document contains 4 mathematical optimization problems: 1) A company must determine production quantities of products P and Q to maximize total profit given machine time constraints. 2) A firm must determine daily production quantities of 3 products to maximize daily profit given machine time capacities. 3) A person must determine quantities of liquid and dry products to minimize cost while meeting chemical requirements. 4) Graphically solve an objective function to maximize Z given linear constraints on variables x1 and x2.

Assignment -1(Mathematical Formulation and Graph)

1. A company makes two products (say, P and Q) using two machines (say, A and
B). Each unit of P that is produced requires 50 minutes processing time on
machine A and 30 minutes processing time on machine B. Each unit of Q that is
produced requires 24 minutes processing time on machine A and 33 minutes
processing time on machine B. Machine A is going to be available for 40 hours
and machine B is available for 35 hours. The profit per unit of P is Rs.25 and the
profit per unit of Q is Rs.30. Company policy is to determine the production
quantity of each product in such a way as to maximize the total profit given that
the available resources should not be exceeded.(Formulation and Graph)
2. A firm produces three products. These products are processed on three different
machines. The time required to manufacture one unit of each of the three
products and the daily capacity of the three machines are give in the table below.
Machine Machine
Capacity
Product 1 Product 2 Product 3 (minutes/day)
M1 2 3 2 440
M2 4 - 3 470
M3 2 5 - 430
It is required to determine the daily number of units to be manufactured for each
product. The profit per unit for product 1, 2 and 3 is Rs.4,Rs.3 and Rs.6
respectively. It is assumed that all the amounts produced are consumed in the
market. Formulate the mathematical model that will maximize the daily profit.
3. A person requires a minimum of 10, 12 and 12 units chemicals A, B, C respectively
for his garden. A liquid product contains 5, 2 and 1 units of A, B, C respectively
per jar. A dry product contains 1, 2 and 4 units of A, B, C per carton. If the liquid
product sells for Rs.3 per jar and the dry product sells for Rs.2 per carton, how
many of each should be purchased in order to minimize the cost and meet the
requirements?
4. Solve the following by graphical method.
Objective Function Max Z=8x1+5x2
Subject to constraints 2x1+x2≤ 500
x1 ≤ 150
x2≤ 250
x1, x2 ≥0
