INTRODUCTION
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Pesticides are substances used to control harmful organisms. It is any substance or mixture of
substances that prevents, destroys, repels or mitigates any pest. A pest is an animal or plants that
can injure the health of population in that environment. When effectively applied, pesticides can
kill or control pests, including weeds, insects, fungi, bacteria, and rodents. Insecticides,
herbicides, fungicides and rodenticides are some of the more well-known pesticides.
The first known pesticide was elemental sulfur dusting used in ancient Sumer about 4500 years
ago in ancient Mesopotamia. By the 15th century, toxic chemicals such as arsenic, mercury and
lead were being applied to crops to kill pest.
Nowadays most commonly used pesticides are the chemical pesticides and natural/organic
pesticides. Chemical pesticides are produce from chemical alterations while natural/organic
pesticides refer to products that are derived srictly from sources in the nature with little to no
alterations.(Modern Pest Services, 2017)These natural sources are usually plants such as neem,
pyrethrum, rotenone or ryania. Farmers does utilize other mixtures or combinations of organic
pesticides such as hot peppers, mainly jalapeno and habanero chili peppers with chopped onion
and garlic. Banana stems are also used. Conventional banana stems extract are sprayed with
synthetic fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides and herbicides.
The fermented banana stem extract contains potassium and cellulolytic bacteria. Potassium will
improve plant growth and cellulolytic bacteria being a normal flora of the soil will help in
degrading the cellulosic wastes in the soil and release the bound nutrients and there by increases
the growth of plants. (The Department of Microbiology, Ethiraj College for Women in Tamil
Nadu, India, 2016)
The use of homemade organic pesticide in the farming practices is old aged practices. It is very
much friendly environment and can obtain from nature directly. It is almost free of cost and
there is no negative impact on human health, soil, animals, plants and environment.
Organic pesticides are derived from natural materials such as plants, animals, bacteria and
minerals. It is tend to be less toxic, more quickly biodegradable and more targeted to specific
pest. Nowadays it is wodely used due increased environment awareness and the pollution
potential and health hazzards from many conventional pesticides as well as increasing global
demand for organically grown food, are driving the use of homemade natural/organic pesticide.
Therefore, in this study, it urges the researchers to test the effectiveness of banana stem extract as
an organic or natural pesticide.
1.3 HYPOTHESIS
The Banana (Musa Paradisiaca) as a natural pesticide that is foliar to plants that has a multi-
purpose pesticide, It enable the shops to grow well therefore it make shops grow healthier. It is
indeed effective in killing or barring insects and pest, still the foliar pest will not work because
you need to reach at least 14 days before extracting it with that minimum of time, foliar
fungicide will be stylish used If the foliar pests won't reach the exact days being used too
beforehand.
1.4 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
The findings of this study could mainly benefit to the proficiency on the effectiveness of banana
stem excerpt as foliar fungicide. Moreover, the sequels of this disquisition could be highly
significant and beneficent to the following:
Department of Agriculture
The study will vastly helpful to The Department of Agriculture is to control chromatic pests and
disease carriers, similar as mosquitoes, ticks, rats and mice.
Agriculturist
The study can help agriculturist to determine whether the natural pesticide is effective through
using banana stem, muscavado and madre cacao as an alternative pesticide spray particularly for
farmers.
Farmers
This study can help our farmers by forfending crops from pests, conditions and weeds as well as
raising productivity per hectare that produce safe foods and quality foods at affordable prices.

BACKGROUNF OF THE STUDY
Agriculture is one of the primary contributors to the Philippine’s( GDP) gross domestic product. It's a source
of income and subsistence among numerous Filipinos. In husbandry, competition is high on the quality and
number of food product. Likewise, there's an adding demand for food product for the adding number of
population in the country. As similar, growers tend to calculate on expansive use of fungicides to increase
yield. Accordingly, health of utmost of the agrarian workers is being compromised. There are numerous
studies establishing the relationship between fungicide use and its effect on the planter’s health. habitual goods
of fungicide exposure include cancer in grown-ups and children, adverse reproductive issues, delayed
neuropathy and neurobehavioral effects1). People who are directly exposed to fungicides are the instructors
who mix, cargo and apply fungicides, and workers cultivating and gathering crops. They're at threat of
developing acute poisoning or indeed death from expansive exposures1). The Cordillera Administrative
Region( CAR) supplies utmost of the marketable vegetable and other agrarian crops in the Philippines3).
Benguet is one of the businesses in this region. Benguet fiefdom has a land area of about km2 and a population
of,533. The agrarian land in Benguet covers about 30 thousand hectares with27.5 thousand granges. Benguet
primarily cultivates crops similar as tubers, roots, bulbs, and lush vegetables, stems, and flowers that makes it
popularly known as the “ salad coliseum ” of the country. also, Benguet fiefdom is the country’s top cabbage
patron. This region contributed77.0 percent to the country’s product of cabbage in the first 3 months of 20102).
The ideal of the study is to give trends regarding the type of fungicide used by the Benguet growers according
to types, threat factors to pesticide.
