FROG ALERT!
RESEARCHERS in Peru have tracked down a mysterious
species of frog thanks to the odd beeping sound it makes.
The tapir frog, named because it has a long snout similar to a tapir,
is native to Peru. Local people have known about the species for a
long time, but biologists have found the creatures harder to track
down because they live underground.
A team from the Keller Science Action Center at Chicago’s Field
Museum used local guides to help them find the species. The
guides listened for the unusual “beep, beep, beep” sound the frog
makes. The team used their hands to dig close to the sounds and
managed to find both adult and young frogs. The species has now
been given the scientific name of Synapturanus danta, as ‘danta’
is the local word for tapir.
