Figure of Speech

Simile- comparing two unlike things that is often introduced or used by like or as.
Example: A rainbow colorful as a fire
Metaphor- is an implied comparison without the use of any comparative word. In
metaphor, words “like, so, as” are not used.
Example: Kendall is a falling angel.
Personification- it’s a literary device that gives human characteristics to a
nonhuman things or inanimate objects.
Example: The wind gently kissed my cheek as I walked.
Apostrophe- is a punctuation mark that is most often used to form possessive
nouns, to represent omitted letters, and to form some plurals.
Example: Let’s start packing things for our trip.
Hyperbole-is a literary technique where an author or speaker intentionally uses
exaggeration and overstatement for emphasis and effect.
Example: I will die if he asked me on a date
Euphemism- the use of word or phrase to avoid saying another word or phrase
that may be unpleasant.
Example: Many soldiers had passed away during the war.
Parable-a short simple story that is illustrating a moral or spiritual truth.
Example: The Cow- human have no power, and they should put their faith only in
God.
Fable- a narrative form that usually featuring, animals that behave and speak as a
human being.
Example: The Monkey and the Cat
: The fable of the old man, his son, and the ass show the folly of
attempting to please everyone.
Antithesis- is a rhetorical and literary device with parallel grammar structure,
which establishes a nearly complete or exact opposition in ideas.
Example: No pain, no gain
: You’re hot then, you’re cold
Epigram- an epigram is a short, interesting ang insightful idea or thought about a
specific subject.
Example: There are no gains without pain.
Irony- is used to express something other than and especially the opposite of
literal meaning.
Example: A pilot has a fear of heights.
Oxymoron- in which two contradictory or incongruous words are combined
together in order to create an effect.
Example: her singing was enough to raise the living dead.
Paradox- it is a statement that is seemingly contradictory or opposed to common
sense and yet it is perhaps true.
Example: I must be cruel to be kind.
Pun- use of a word or phrase so as to emphasize or suggest it different meanings
or application.
Example: She had a photographic memory but never developed it.
Metonymy- a figure of speech consists of the use of the name of one thing for
that of another of which it is an attribute of with which it is associated.
Example: The white house (referring to the American administration.)
Synecdoche- a figure of speech which, most often, a part of something is used to
refer to its whole.
Example: Let’s check my new wheels out for a spin.
Climax- is the highest point of interest, it is the point of highest dramatic tension
or a major turning point in the action.
Example: At the novels climax, the main character finds herself face to face with
the enemy.
Onomatopoeia – is the naming of a thing or action by a vocal imitation of the
sound associated with.
Example: Shh! Keep quit and no talking everyone are studying in the library.
Alliteration- It is the repetition of one or more similar consonants in successive
words.
Example: The teacher just buzzed around as busy as a bee.
Identical Statement- is an indirect mode of describing the fact that is not
appearing on the surface.
Example: I am what I am
Periphrases- It is a use of longer phrasing in place of a possible shorter form of a
expression.
Example: The viewers couriers of air. (wind)
Assonance- is the repetition of the same or similar vowels sounds within words or
sentences.
Example: They’re some creeps who I wouldn’t meet if you paid me a heap of cash.
Anticlimax- it is opposite to climax, an event or experience that causes
disappointment because it is less exciting that was expected.
Example: two characters was on a café gazing the view, they don’t even kiss,
instead they go home and never confess their feelings for each other.

Innuendo or Insinuation- the action of suggesting, without being direct or a hint.

Example: Even as the sun with purple colored face had taken his last leave of the
weeping morn.

Play upon words-we use the same word in different shades of meaning within the
same sentence.
Example: I’m glad I know sign language, It’s pretty handy.

Exclamation- is a figure of speech in which a strong expression or feeling is used


to draw greater attention to a point than a mere bald statement.

Example: I’m so mad at her!

Interrogation-is to ask a question, not for the sake of getting an answer, but put
point for creating a profound effect.

Example: Have you even watched this movie?
