Do you think Filipinos still need a hero such as Dr. Jose Rizal?

Yes, I think that the Filipinos still need heroes like Jose Rizal today. Having modern-day
heroes gives a sense of pride and solidarity amongst the country’s citizens. They are the ones
who usually ignite the spark in a wildfire. Seeing someone who is passionate with what he does
can inspire the people around him to also do better. These present-day Jose Rizals are like role
model and inspiration that Filipinos can relate to. Our land needs more people who will mirror
Rizal's qualities and principles.
How is RA 1425 shaping the Philippines today?
The RA 1425, also known as the Rizal Law, is shaping us, specifically the college
students who are currently taking the subject: Life and Works of Rizal, in various aspects in life
that we often neglect this present time. Nowadays, most people tend to focus more on the
fleeting things that they sometimes forget the essence of moral values. The Republic Act 1425
keeps us reminded that Jose Rizal wants us to respect and listen to elders, to stand firm to our
beliefs, to persevere in our studies, to voice out our sensible thoughts just as he did, and many
more. He spent his life learning, helping, inspiring, traveling, loving, creating, and that is what
we should be imitating from him. We need more heroes like him for us to look up and relate to,
not just in terms of saving the country, but in embracing values towards self, family, and society
as well.
In your point of view, what were Rizal's greatest and weakest attributes?
In my perspective, Jose Rizal’s greatest attribute is his intelligence. In Rizal’s time,
educational attainment is not granted to everyone. He was lucky enough to be privileged that he
got to be tutored privately at his young age, and he got to study in universities all around the
globe. Another attribute that has helped him to become the country’s national hero is his drive to
carry out and pursue his aspirations. He used his intelligence along with his drive to open the
eyes of his fellowmen with the reality they were facing at that time.
On the other hand, Jose Rizal’s weakest attribute for me is his love for his mother and
the Philippines. One’s source of strength can be their greatest source of weakness, too.
Sometimes, the things we do for love are often the cause of our downfall. In Rizal’s case, one of
the reasons why Rizal studied abroad is to cure his mother’s eyes. Across the globe, he has
finished his studies and literary works that sparked revolts back in his homeland. Truth be told,
he could just stay there and live a well-off life, but Rizal, already knowing what is at stake, still
chose to go back to the Philippines, despite the fact that once he stepped back in his country
land, his life becomes in danger.
