1
apply knowledge in the design process and get trained to work process and
competency.
1.2.3 Work nature was purely academic to successfully framework the project
report with realistic field data’s consisting various tasks involving
visualization, laboratory tests, conceptual analyzing, designing and drawing
the model elements in hard copy. My engineering report were theoretical in
nature where I assessed the building loads, carried out structural analysis
calculations and designed an economical structure.
1.2.5 My role was to ensure that the project work is completed satisfactorily
within the time frame during the final year of under graduate engineering
studies.
2
Carry out structural analysis per code requirements considering live loads
and wind loads
Design consideration in accordance with IS 1893:1984 Criteria for
Earthquake Resistant design of Structures
Submission of final report to guide / department on the agreed deadline.
Attend the viva voce on the project document with external guide as part of
curriculum.
1.3.1 I had undertaken “Planning and Design of the proposed convention Center
on clayey foundation soil” as my project title. The scope included were its
functional planning and developing structural design of all elements of the
building in accordance with Indian standard code IS 456 (2000) 4th revision
Plain and reinforced concrete, IS 875 (1987) part 1 Indian standard code for
design loads other than earthquake for buildings, drafting drawings, 3D
modeling and estimating the cost for its construction on Clay subgrade.
1.3.4 Main activates along my flow chart were Conceptual proposal, project
selection, selection of guide, Initial meetings, Introduction, Decide on the
contents and chapters, planning, Site investigations, Laboratory testing’s,
footings design and layout, Column layout and design, Beam layout and
design, Slab design and layout, Stair case design, Water tank design, Roof
truss design & layout drawings, Bill of quantities and finally Conclusion.
1.3.5 My strategy was to complete the whole preliminary works of collecting the
data’s viz. including surveying, soil investigations and approvals in
reference to the project within the first 3 months from start. In the next 3
months to achieve progress for the architectural planning, conceptual design,
and structural designs works and prepare manuscripts. Further review from
3
guide and go forward within the next 3 months on completing verifying
design with CAD and make comparison with analytical calculation using
Moment distribution method.
1.3.6 Above elements were fulfilled and continued in the next 2 months in
preparing CAD layout drawings, footings, columns, staircase, beams, slabs
and roof including elevation and isometric views. My knowhow in
AutoCAD simplified its workings in comparison to drafting it manually.
1.3.7 I carried out the preliminary survey of the land and established the contour
map and site boundaries. Soil survey samplings were experimentally tested
through college Geotechnical Lab and borehole sampling for the ground
water level with respect to arbitrary reduced levels. After assessing the
bearing capacity of soil underneath being poor and clayey deposit I have
decided to plan a foundation with isolated columned frame footings with tie
beams and partial mat foundation.
1.3.8 A laboratory test and examination of the raw undisturbed site sample was
carried out by me to observe its characteristics. It was found that the
samples were soft clayey deposits (a material weak in bearing loads),
1.3.9 Its high compressibility behaviour of Soft clay in presence of water and low
shear strength made me to reconsider the earlier proposed foundation
design. To redesign the foundation structure, I carried out test on specific
gravity, moisture content, dry density, porosity, permeability, bulkiness,
atterberg limits and unconfined compressive test on representative samples.
Further suggested methods to improve bearing capacity of the strata by soil
stabilization.
1.3.11 I have utilized Auto Cad program in preparing layout for site plan, ground
floor plan and for all the architectural layouts including balcony & stages
including sectional details.
4
1.3.13 I designed Structural elements using limit state method of design as per IS
456 Code of practice. Computer analysis, using STAAD Pro V8i, was
utilized for evaluating stress on structural elements.
1.3.14 I computed the air volume inside the auditorium; provisions for placing the
Air Handling Units (AHU) were made. Acoustics and lightning were also
designed to suit the functional requirement as per the Standard code for
Buildings.
1.3.15 Standard bill of quantities for the items of work were taken and estimated
the project cost for its structural work including provision of a water tank.
1.3.18 I came across hurdles in the design of deep beams initially. My analogy of
the beam model was based on 2 legged vertical open stirrups in all my
assumptions and model analysis. When the whole design was complete and
when reviewed by Guide, he noticed this mistake. Later I corrected the
mistake by redesigning all the beams with closed stirrups where torsional
stress prevailed.
1.3.20 My relationship with the team that I worked on Surveying, data collections
and soil investigations (both staffs, officers & crew) were always cordial. I
maintained a good rapport with my Guide throughout the duration of my
project. My work on this project “Planning and Design of the Proposed
5
Conventional Center on clayey foundation soil” is been used as a reference
guide by Under graduate students in my Institute.

member designs and detailing as per Indian standard specification.
2.3.6 I prepared the Bar Bending Schedule for the foundation works and was
strictly adhered on site. Effectively a large saving of steel was achieved.
Bill of quantity that prepared from HO was not matching to my
calculations. Hence I prepared BOQ for each categories of work item
wise for the main building. My calculations came true.
2.3.8 I have designed the drainage system and its piping layout containing a
line of collection chambers, inspection chambers and manholes that
connected to a Septic tank.
2.3.9 A realistic project work schedule was prepared initially in Gantt chart by
me by identifying all major milestones in the construction stages for all
the buildings and infrastructures associated in this development from
inception until handover events are completed and thereby arriving a
completion date and monitored on a fortnight basis. Daily activity and
work reports are planned accordingly. I assured that the milestone
events that targeted were not slipped. This is achieved by adding
additional labor resources and working overtime on a case on case basis.
4
2.3.10Superstructure were designed as framed structure to cover with concrete
blocks. Shallow trench excavations were manually executed owing to
presence of high ground water table. Contractor could not progress the
excavation due to water logging. I have solved their problem by
selecting a 34 KW dewatering pump installed with piping with
perforations interconnected for drainage and deeply driven down at
locations specified by me. The whole procedure simplified the
excavation which otherwise could have been impossible to complete the
work during that season. Owing to this variation I had prepared change
orders and got approved from top management on review budgets.

covers, wetting the formwork ahead of concrete pouring, check on seal
of vertical/horizontal joints of shutter to arrest concrete bleeding. In
spite of above on several cases I have noticed mistakes during
inspection and had corrected the drawbacks ahead of concreting. Site
forms were laid out by me to assure quality control to which the project
and its components meet the client’s expectations, objectives, standards,
and intended purpose by measuring conformity of the project to the
plans, specifications, and code standards.
2.3.16I attend and report progress work on site during the regular weekly
Official meetings at Site management level with consultant and Client
representatives. Issues on the site are discussed during this meeting.
Solutions are evolved during this meeting and MOM’s are prepared by
me.
2.3.17I ensured on site the industrial rules and regulations in the construction
industry for the welfare of fellow workers are been strictly followed.
Special instruction and notices are displayed to follow Safe practices &
to maintain housekeeping. For specialized work, workers are trained to
handle activities safely. No workers are allowed to work without being
conducted Tool box talk and are certified by Safety Officer.
2.3.18During my tenure I sorted out with the labor union leaders the issues
that was dampening the work progress on site. Locals around the
premises of the site objected to have outside labors engaged to work in
their area. My relationship with local union leaders, municipal
authorities and client representative played a role for settling the work
disputes.
2.3.19In my construction site we worked as a team and achieved the final goal
of completing the all substructure works ahead of the scheduled time
6
and budget. Each individual in my group (contractor engineer,
supervisors, Foreman’s, Charge hands, Steel fixers, Carpenters, Masons
and helper staff) stood firmly under my leadership and guaranteed this
result. I have a firm conviction that it is due to my strong interpersonal

1
planning, work scheduling, and managing its execution as per work specification I
undertook this project on February 2013 from its inception stage and the construction is
due to be completed by August 2016.
Managing Director
(Mr. Cyriac Davis)
General Manager
(Mr. Renjith Dominic)
Main Contractor
(Larsan & Tubro)
Liaising with clients and main contractor (engineers and surveyors), including attending
regular meetings to keep them informed of progress.
Day-to-day management of the site, including supervising and monitoring the site labor
and subcontractors.
Planning the work activities and efficiently organizing site facilities in order to meet
agreed deadlines.
Setting out the works in accordance with the drawings and specification
Providing data in respect of variation orders and site instructions
2
Checking materials and work in progress for compliance with the specified requirements
Overseeing quality control and health and safety matters on site.
Resolving unexpected technical difficulties and other problems that may arise.
Providing data in respect of variation orders and site instructions
Preparing as built drawings, technical reports and maintaining site diary
Preparing reports and convening weekly progress meetings with Client representatives.
3.3.1 Here, I worked as a Consultant Site Supervisor overseeing site activities of main
Contractor Larsan & Tubro and their sub-contractors on Civil works related to the
construction of new Cochin international airport terminal building. The site engineers of
the contractor reports to me.
3.3.2 As soon I took over this project, I shouldered the overall responsibility for the
completion of the main terminal block construction from foundation works starting with
piling, sub structure and thereafter super structure, roofing and finishing works. Now it is
in the mid of the handing over process for commissioning.
3.3.3 I spent my initial days in site planning by reviewing the foundation pile layout drawings,
architectural and structural drawings of pile and pile caps, investigation of soil boring
reports, reinforcement details, preparing bar bending schedules, arranging meetings with
concrete supplier and pile contractor and arrived to a realistic master plan schedule to
stick on to substructure works.
3.3.4 I read through the contract documents in relation to the supply of ready mix concrete, its
mix ratios and design aspects for its characteristic strength requirements, the properties
of the consistent elements within the fresh concrete (Viz. sand, cement, course aggregate
& water) and reviewed all documents associated to procedural requirements for quality
and adherence parameters and sourced standard test equipment’s for in-house testing’s
and major tests sourced out to third party laboratories..
3.3.5 I inspected the concrete batching plant and evaluated their capabilities and witnessed the
preparation of concrete trial mix for 30 N/mm2 characteristic strength and conducted
tests for its workability. Later, with several trials of w/c ratio and concrete mix
proportioning, an ideal mix was approved by me. Tests cubes were crushed to assure
strengths are in line with contract specification. Repeated nondestructive strength test
were conducted on service piles for quality conformance.
3.3.6 Under my supervision, 1798 bored cast in--situ piles were driven for the main building
block. Site forms that were already in place on quality were revised by me and utilized in
my site for recording the parameters. I instructed the contractor to assign a data operator
to log in the details through computer system, including the rock samples that were taken
3
during boring for quick retrieval. For this development, I gained an appreciation from the
QC department.
3.3.7 After pile driving was complete and cured, it was cleaned for its capping and foundation
was water proofed with bituminous membrane. This work was a high skilled job
involving proper procedural work. My knowledge on material engineering guided the
subcontractor to prepare the method statement and confirmed that the concrete is
protected from direct attack from ground water intrusion.
3.3.8 Massive columns, Deep beams, transfer slabs, grid slab and roofing’s were constructed in
my supervision. Majority of main beams were pre-stressed on site. Apart from quality
work, I was involved in checking the dimensions of structural members, line & grids,
rebar arrangement & cover spacing prior to closing of shutters.
4
inflection point. Based on my recommendation safety department prepared handouts
detailing hooking points to lift precast beams & tanks.
3.3.14 I have saved large quantity of concrete in my project construction site by planning
activities in such a way that the extra quantities of concrete are utilized in readymade
molds to cast precast elements (usually lintels and barricades, boundary blocks) on site
such that no concrete are being wasted. Thus, a large saving in cost was achieved.
3.3.15 I have introduced the SOP on site such that large savings in usage of reinforcement bars,
tile glue, cement, paints and work tools were achieved. Ensured, bar bending schedule
were followed during steel cutting to avoid wastage of steel. Strictly issuing materials
from store as per supplier’s manual for spread and similar is the case with plywood. No
plywood of standard size 2.4 x 1.2 is allowed to cut unless it is required. Working
drawings for cutting plywood are made prior as per requirement of floor plans and are to
be reused for typical.
3.3.16 With importance, I did structural inspection of beams and slabs for reinforcement
arrangement ahead of each concrete. Wrong workmanship in placing of steel and
improper binding of steel impairs the strength of the structure in whole. I did advise the
Supervisors and Site engineers to make double check on the steel arrangement at the time
of binding. I have noticed remarkable improvement in the work quality as well as
lowered the errors in workmanship.
3.3.17 As a supervisory staff at airport construction, several trades of works are being
coordinated by me. Mechanical piping for sewers and drains, water supply lines,
electrical conduits, firefighting risers, sprinkler drops, air condition ducts, electrical
fittings that interferes in the arrangement of the false ceiling. Though there are shop
drawings prepared by individual contractors for erecting service lines smoothly, it does
creep problems of interfering one service with another. I modified or rerouted the service
for a solution. I took special care in coordinating such situation with other service
engineers early in advance without delaying the work.
3.3.18 Since preplanning is crucial for work progress, I carried out allocation of labors and
material resources via network charts, by utilizing bar chart to track daily activities at site
level and critical path method to report Client office. I maintained a procedure to have
Supervisors discussed, a day in advance, for the next day’s work.
3.3.19 My relationship with Client, Architects and senior level staff of Contractors of various
disciplines were very cordial and respectful in all technical dealings. Proper teamwork
was ensured in my work site by communicating each discipline heads by written
5
instructions in clarity. I maintained a proper reporting procedure and regular site
meetings were conducted to discuss all issues on work related at supervisory level under
my presence. It is to be noted that a solution is arrived during each technical meetings
and was quite rewarding in the way the cooperation that I received from coworkers to a
state where we are now at the commissioning stage.
CE 3.4 Summary
The project’ is being realized as per schedule in spite of the several hurdles that came
across during its construction. This building stands as a land mark structure highlighting
tradition of Kerala’s heritage with vast service area for passengers and visitors equally
with modern amenities in place I have created a clean safe work site environment for
workers so that No major loss time injury occurred, planned and coordinated activities
with right supervision such that work quality is maintained. However, I came across a
failure situation where an unexpected overnight rain water that gushed in through the
OTS (open to sky) caused damage to the ongoing works of false ceiling that got
discolored. I have ensured major milestones does not delay by monitoring progress and
allocating resources effectively. Regular Client requirements on alteration / modification
were handled by me personally. My skill in problem solving capability ensured to sort
out officially their requirements and to meet project deadlines. Above all my
communication skills added to maintain good relationship with Company personals and
Clients alike.
