Disscussion
A circle is a closed curve. It is the set of all points in a plane that are equidistant from a given fixed point.
When you say equidistant, it means that they have equal distance. All points have equal distance from a
given fixed point. We name a circle by its center. In this case, we call this circle, circle O. If you draw a
line segment drawn from the center of the circle to any point of the circle. You can come up with a
radius
The parts of a circle are the radius, diameter, circumference, arc, chord, secant, tangent, sector and
segment.
Circle
A round plane figure whose boundary consists of points equidistant from a fixed point.
Centre
The centre of the circle is the fixed point from which all points on the boundary of the circle are
equidistant.
Radius
Diameter
The distance across the circle going through the centre.
Circumference
Arc
Minor arc – A minor arc is less than half the circumference.
Area
Chord
A line segment going from one point of the circumference to another but does not go through the
centre.
Secant
Tangent
Sector
Major sector – A major sector has a central angle which is more than 180 degrees
Minor sector – A minor sector has a central angle which is less than 180 degrees
Semi circle
Half of a circle. Could be considered a sector where the circle has be split by the diameter.
Quadrant
Segment
Major segment – a segment where the arc is greater than half the circumference.
Minor segment – a segment where the arc is less than half the circumference.
Circle is used in our daily lives like the different things that we used in our house like clocks, circular
plates, circular tables and chairs
Assessment
Instruction: Use the words below to label each part of the circle correctly.
