PURPOSE:
This document deals with procedures and practices for electrical safety in CiplaQcil plant.
SCOPE:
RESPONSIBILITY:
DEFINITION:
Electrical safety are the procedures, guidelines, and practices used to safeguard persons,
machines, and environment from hazards associated with use of electricity.
1.1 A person carrying out electrical works should wear the following: - Overall or overcoat,
Safety Shoes, Shock resistant hand gloves and Helmet.
2.0 PROCEDURE:
2.1.1 The overcurrent protective devices, the total impedance, the component short-circuit
current ratings, and other characteristics of the circuit to be protected shall be
selected and coordinated to permit the circuit protective devices used to clear a fault
to do so without the occurrence of extensive damage to the electrical components of
the circuit. This fault shall be assumed to be either between two or more of the circuit
conductors, or between any circuit conductor and the grounding conductor or
enclosing metal raceway.
2.1.2 Sufficient access and working space shall be provided and maintained about all
electric equipment to permit ready and safe operation and maintenance of such
equipment. A minimum clearance of 1m to be considered.
2.2 Electrical Operations.
2.2.1 Regularly check electrical systems to ensure the path to ground is continuous.
2.2.2 Visually check all electrical equipment before use. Take any defective equipment
out of service.
2.3.1 Ground all power supply systems, electrical circuits, and electrical equipment.
2.3.2 The conductor insulation shall be of a type that is approved for the voltage, operating
temperature, and location of use.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND EARTHING CONTINUITY
2.3.3 Equipment intended to interrupt current at fault levels shall have an interrupting
rating sufficient for the the line terminals of the equipment. nominal circuit voltage
and the current which is available at terminal leads.
2.3.4 Equipment intended to interrupt current at other than fault levels shall have an
interrupting rating at nominal circuit voltage sufficient for the current that must be
interrupted.
2.3.5 Electric equipment shall be firmly secured to the surface on which it is mounted.
2.3.6 Electrical equipment provided with ventilating openings shall be installed and
maintained so that free circulation of air through the equipment is not obstructed.
2.4.1 Connection of conductors to terminal parts shall ensure a good and firm connection
without damaging the conductors.
2.4.2 Energized parts of electric equipment operating at 50 volts or more shall be guarded
against accidental contact by use of approved cabinets or other forms of approved
enclosures.
2.5.1 Only qualified persons will have access to the space within reach of the energized
parts.
2.5.2 Entrances to rooms and other guarded locations containing exposed live parts shall
be marked with conspicuous warning signs forbidding unqualified persons to enter.
2.5.3 Parts of electric equipment which in ordinary operation produce arcs, sparks,
flames, or molten metal shall be enclosed or separated and isolated from all
combustible material.
2.5.4 Disconnecting means required shall be capable of being locked in the open
position.
2.5.5 When a circuit is abandoned or discontinued, its conductors shall be removed from
the raceways, or be marked not in use.
2.5.6 All switches, circuit breakers, fuses and other control and protective devices shall be
so located or arranged that they may be safely operated, removed or repaired.
2.6.2 Remove the power and control fuses. Do not put the fuses in panel feeder,
Keep aside till job is completed.
ELECTRICAL SAFETY AND EARTHING CONTINUITY
2.6.3 Place “Under Maintenance” board on the feeder & on the equipment.
2.6.4 Always use appropriate tools like insulated pliers, insulated screwdriver etc.
2.7.1 Do not use test lamp, line tester & megger in flameproof area.
2.7.3 Do not open any junction box, push button station, and starter unless it is electrically
isolated.
2.7.4 Check again for all the electrical points before handing over the job to others.
2.7.5 Please note that the following are the areas, which are categorized as hazardous;
DP store and Tablet coating area.
2.9.3 Earth resistance values to be done annually or upon installation of a new system.
The results to be filled in annexure ENG-01/A2 attached.
2.9.4 Electrical inspection to be regularly carried out on all electrical systems to ascertain
compliance to all electrical safety guidelines. Records to be kept in annexure ENG-
01/A3
