Food Desert Journal

Imagine that you have been asked by your local City Government to come up with
solutions to food deserts found throughout the city. You will create a proposed solution
that will provide healthy, affordable food options to people living in the food deserts.

As we go through the project you will be answering the questions below. These
questions will help you hold your thinking for your final project.

Part 1 - Food Deserts:

1. Answer the following questions regarding food desserts:

a. What is a food desert? Where are they located in your area?

A food desert is a neighborhood or urban town without easy access to healthy and affordable
food.

b. How does living in a food desert affect health?

Living in a food desert affects human health because instead of grocery stores, they have gas
stations and fast food places. This then leads to people's health majorly decreasing.

2. Which area will you be focusing on? Describe your community: demographics,
socioeconomic status, education level, employment rate, and general health.
I will be focusing on Smithville. My community is a small town with a decent amount of people.
With a wide range of age groups from elders to babies. People in Smithville are mostly white
(95%) (with 4.5% being Hispanic). I would say our socioeconomic status is medium. Smithville
school district ranks along the 20% of public schools in Missouri.

3. What are at least 3 factors in your chosen area that are contributing to the area being a food
desert?
- There is one grocery store located in smithville
- There are so many fast food places
- With the population growing, more fast food places will be popping up causing there to
be more of a food desert.

4. Brainstorm solution ideas for your solution given what you know about the area you have
chosen. Be prepared to make changes to your ideas as you learn more about how
food is produced.
- Add another grocery store
- Even better a farmers market or a healthier option.
For your project: Identify the area that your solution will be focusing on. Write out the
difficulties faced by your area that are a result of being a food desert. Use the
vocabulary: food desert

Part 2 - Photosynthesis:
1. What is photosynthesis? Make sure to include the reactants and products.
Photosynthesis is the base of all food chain. It is the process of changing oxygen, carbon
dioxide, and energy. Where the plants use energy to make their own food.

2. What are the factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis?

Temp, CO2, and light intensity

3. How does the process of photosynthesis contribute to creating healthy food options.
Photosyntheiss produces natural sugars for the plant/ vegetables

For your project: explain how the process of photosynthesis is present in your solution.
Use the vocabulary: photosynthesis

Part 3 - Cellular Respiration:

1. How does the process of cellular respiration relate to the food we eat?
Cellular respiration occurs when there is the right energy for it. Therefore, the better you eat
the more cellular respiration you’ll produce.

2. What considerations do you need to make to ensure that your solution uses food that is
most efficient for cellular respiration?
proteins, fruits, and veggies

For your project: Explain how the process of cellular respiration is best aided by your
solution. Use the vocabulary: cellular respiration, energy, aerobic respiration
========================================================================

Part 4 - Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration Connection:

1. How are photosynthesis and cellular respiration related to one another?

2. Provide a specific example of photosynthesis and cellular respiration working together.

3. Where are areas in the world in which there is a strong connection between photosynthesis
and cellular respiration? Explain why this relationship is so strong.

For your project: Double check that your solution incorporates both photosynthesis and
cellular respiration and be sure that you clearly describe the relationship between the
two within your specific solution.

========================================================================

Part 5 - Carbon Cycle :

1. What does it mean to cycle?

2. What is the importance of carbon to life?

3. Identify the different sources of carbon.

4. What is the source of carbon in your solution?

For your project: Ensure that you solution provides a sufficient amount of carbon that
can be produced in several different ways.

========================================================================

Part 6 - Trophic Levels:

1. What are the different trophic levels?

2. Identify at least 3 organisms for the following trophic levels: producer, primary consumer,
secondary consumer, and tertiary consumer.

3. Which trophic level contains the most energy? The least?

4. Which trophic level(s) will you focus on as part of your solution?

For your project: be able to explain which trophic level the sources of food you choose in
your solution fall into and be able to justify this choice. Use the vocabulary: trophic level,
producer, consumer

========================================================================

Part 7 - Solution:
1. What is your final proposed solution?

2. Why did you choose the solution that you did?

3. What materials are going to be needed for your solution?

4. What is the anticipated cost of implementing your solution?

5. Explain how easy or how difficult it is going to be to implement your solution. (Think about
space, hours of work, employees, cost, community acceptance, etc.)

6. Why is your solution going to be successful?

Part 8:
Now that you have gathered your information, you will start creating your final products in order
to showcase your proposal. You will be creating a digital poster.
