LITERATURE OF THE AMERICAS

Directions: Choose a novel as your final paper in class. Provide the following details.

A. Title of the Novel: Prayer for the Dead

B. Author: David Wiltse

C. Interesting Features (theme/topic, setting, author, characters, etc.)

Two men consumed by death in a contemporary world; John Becker,

the investigator who left the FBI because he was too good at his job—he
could think like a killer. But he enjoyed the thrill of the hunt too much. Roger
Dyce, the serial killer whose twisted crimes would lure Becker back to his old
profession, but this time, Becker is closer to his prey than ever before—close
enough to kill.

D. Reviews from publishers/critics: (Write at least 3)

1. “Wiltse displays powerful writing skills in this spellbinding thriller and

builds tension with subtle, chilling precision.”— Publishers Weekly

2. “Complex character detailing of both the hunter and the hunted.” —

Booklist

3. “What might happen to the psychological stability of an agent who works

on a case after case with unerring success? Would that agent start to
question his sanity? Can one be too good at his job? WIltse creates such an
agent in this fascinating tale…He has also created an extraordinary
psychopath that we couldn’t put the book down!” — Mystery Scene

E. Possible Contributions (to your research interest/growing thesis)

The adoption of the various literary theories and criticisms offered in

the narrative would be one of this book's finest contributions to my field of
research interest. Because the book falls under the category of a crime
thriller, where particular FBI procedures and vocabulary have to be clarified
for some readers, defamiliarization is crucial throughout the entire narrative.
Furthermore, it offers further details on the characteristics of Paraphilia and
the psychology that underlies it. It's an intriguing fusion of psychology and
crime portrayed in literary art-inspired styles.
