Journalweek 2
This
week, I took initiative and tried my best to address the concerns I had from last week. Monday, I
did not work for Martin Luther King Day. This semester I am also taking the Research methods
course which is from 1-1:50 on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. We did not have class this
week, so I was able to focus solely on my research project for my internship. This week’s focus
was mainly on making connections rather than continuing the research I started last week.
Wednesday morning, I met with my research methods professor, Dr. Speelman at Blackbird to
get some advice from her on how to get started on my research project. She explained to me how
I could breakdown my project into a timeline of goals for myself. We are completing a group
research project in her class which expands over the course. I will be basically using that project
as my guide for the research project for my internship. She told me that next week we will begin
learning how to write a lit review, which I will also be attempting on my research project outside
of class. Then we will be learning how to do surveys. She explained that if I were to make a
survey on herbalism to give out to students, I would have to get it approved by the IRB
(Institutional Review Board). She said that if I start with a survey that showed qualitative data,
then it will take less time to get approved. I also am planning on writing a research proposal to be
able to participate in Research Day on March 29th where I am planning to display a poster as well
as show a visual aid. Hopefully by the end of the semester I will have an article on my research
project posted on “The Corinthian”. I am very grateful that Dr. Speelman has offered to work
with me on this project and has given me so many ideas and opportunities. This week I also
spent a lot of time in the office getting to know the other interns. I did not have any specific
questions for them other than I just wanted to hear their experience when they first became an
intern at the Office of Sustainability. They said that they felt just like me when they started,
slightly uncomfortable and unsure what to do, but then after they started getting to know
everyone it got easier. It made me feel better that they felt the same way. I have realized this
week that the more I work with other people the more comfortable I feel. I like receiving
reassurance that I am on track and where I need to be. This week has relieved a lot of stress and
has made me more excited to get into my research project and see how far it will go.
