TRAINING & DEVELOPMENT

• Training is a systematic process through which an
organization’s human resources gain knowledge and
develop skills by instruction and practical activities that
result in improved corporate performance.
• Development is concerned with the growth of employees
in all respects. It is the process by which managers or
executives acquire skills and competency in their present
jobs and also capabilities for future tasks. The purpose of
development is imparting advanced knowledge and
competencies among the employees.
• Training refers to the process of increasing the
knowledge, skills and abilities of employees for doing a
work. Its main aim is to help the employee to do the job
better.
• Development refers to the overall growth of the
employees. These are learning opportunities which are
designed for employees to grow. Its main aim is overall
growth of employees.
• Training is required for organizational growth. It is
beneficial to both the employer and the employee; it
makes the employee more efficient which leads to better
results and growth of the organization.

iii. Bridging the Gap

THE EFFECTS OF LACK OF TRAINING

• Employees who have not been trained properly will
produce less work and of lower quality. Less knowledge
and training lead to a lower level of performance, resulting
in less profit. This type of work often leads to errors,
quality issues, time lost repeating activities.
i. Unsafe work environment ; Not training your employees
can also put them at greater risk of workplace
accidents and can put your company at risk of lawsuits
and fines. Not training them on how to safely move heavy
items, climb ladders, use dangerous machinery or handle
chemicals can lead to workplace injuries for which your
company ends up having to pay. In the worst cases, the
lack of training can even cause an employee's death.
ii. Increased business expenses ; To reduce the effects of
employee turnover, know the common causes so your
business can avoid making costly mistakes. Employees
often leave an organization that has a toxic
culture and bad leadership. Overworking employees,
giving them meaningless or boring assignments, paying
low wages and not offering proper development and
training can also make your employees head elsewhere.
iii. Loss of customers ; Poor customer service typically results
in fewer customers, which translates into lower sales and
profits for your business. This can initiate a vicious cycle
in which a company tries to save money on staffing or
customer service training, which makes service levels
spiral downward even further.;;
iv. Low rates of production ; Lack of training leads to lower
quality products and services. Even if an untrained
employee can finish his work as quickly as his
colleagues, the finished job may have more defects or
careless mistakes.

ESSENTIALS OF TRAINING PROGRAMS

The 5 basic elements of any employee training program.
Practicality-
In work environment with little or no practicality involved,
trainings should engage them with practical situations where
they can apply the acquired knowledge to meet the expectations
of the organization by enhancing productivity, efficiency.
Engagement-
Different individuals have different ways of learning.
Therefore, you need to ensure the effectiveness of the training
sessions by using different learning modes and materials.
Regularity-
The training sessions should be repeated at regular intervals.
That is how they are going to be the part and parcel of the
employees’ lives.
Comprehensiveness-
The sessions should be able to give the trainees a clear
conception of the most complicated legal, technical and
managerial topics.
Documentation-
The last but not the least important element of any training
session is documentation.

THE TYPES OF TRAINING PROGRAMS ARE –

Technical training is a type of training meant to teach the new
employee the technological aspects of the job.
Quality training refers to familiarizing employees with the
means of preventing, detecting, and eliminating non-quality
items, usually in an organization that produces a product.
Skills training, the third type of training, includes proficiency
needed to actually perform the job.
Soft skills training refer to personality traits, social graces,
communication, and personal habits that are used to
characterize relationships with other people.
Professional training is a type of training required to be up to
date in one’s own professional field.
APPROACHES OF TRAINING PROGRAMS ;
The 5 Most Popular Ways To Train Employees -
• Traditional Training Methods
Traditional approaches to training still offer a number of
benefits and are commonly found in many companies today.
Here is a list of training methods from the traditional category
that should be considered when choosing the best training
techniques for employees in your company.
1. Classroom-Based Training Programs
Usually led by a qualified facilitator, classroom learning takes
place over one or more days in a physical venue on- or off-site.
Groups of employees go through a series of presentation slides
and activities, like case study assessments or information on
company policy issues.
2. Interactive Training
One of the most effective training methods in the workplace,
interactive training actively involves learners in their own
learning experience. This training can take the form of
simulations, scenarios, role plays, quizzes or games.
3. On-The-Job Training
With on-the-job training, not only are employees actively
involved in learning, but they also participate in real activities
that relate to their current or future job. This is one of the most
effective training methods for succession planning.
This type of training can result in rapid learning because
employees are thrown into the proverbial deep end. This
experience can be a little too stressful for some employees, let
alone time-consuming, because of the frequent input required.
• Modern Training Methods -
4. Social Learning
Social learning isn’t found in many of the common training
methods, mostly because it’s not as easy to structure, measure
and control. Yet it can be very effective, because employees are
pushed beyond the boundaries of their daily roles, acquiring
new perspectives and problem-solving skills.
5. Online Training
eLearning, or online training, has become one of the most
widely recognized solutions to the challenge of how to train
employees effectively. Online workplace training programs
can include eLearning courses, webinars, videos, etc., and
allow information to be presented and tested in many different
ways.

EXERCISE
Imagine you are the training manger of a hotel that will open
next year. Your GM asks you to develop a training program
that aims to boost the team spirit of the newly formed Executive
Committee Members. Your GM suggests you organize a two-
day course in a resort location from 9 to 5 for both days. Your
task is to suggest 3 training methods that suit the training theme
described above.
Remember your training theme was to change the individuals
attitudes
Employ exercises that trainees can-

React to
Provide feedback in
Receive inspiration to move on
Suitable training methods-
Role-play
Games
Simulation exercises
Discussion/debate formats
Experiential exercises

evaluate their own behaviors)
