Topic 1 : GETTING READY TO LEARN

 Transitioning from school to University

Transitioning from being in a school to university is not an easy task

because students need to make new friends, find out new things and make
necessary lifestyle adjustment for them to feel at home in the new
surroundings. To adapt to a new life is hard but is worth experience.
 Characteristics of succesful students

Students need to have good characteristics to become a successful

student. If the students keep slacking off and not focused on their
assignments chances of them getting good grades will be low.

5 steps to becoming a successful university student

1) Make your studies your number 1 priority. Students would

usually become a success in their studies because they make
their studies a number one priority. Although making time for
friends, family, extracurricular activities, and even some alone
downtime is crucial, but you should never disregard the time
you need to study. You should probably forego the large party
two days prior to the exam if you have one coming up and
don't feel ready.
2) Be punctual. Learn to judge time and reach where you need to
be in a timely manner. In fact, you should aim to arrive a little
early wherever you go so you have enough time to settle in,
focus, and be prepared to learn when you arrive. Being on time
is crucial if you want to be a great student, whether you have
an exam to take or a study session with a friend.
3) Work Honestly. This means that you should always do your
own work and refrain from copying or cheating. Cheating won't
help you achieve your goals, and a shortcut today may land
you in serious problems tomorrow.
4) Stay Focused. Successful students maintain their attention on
the current task. You must make a commitment to studying
one chapter of your history book for an hour, rather than
allowing your thoughts to stray. Take a quick 10-minute break
if you need it don't let it turn into an hour-long break after only
10 minutes of studying.
5) Get to know your lecturer. Stop by the lecturer's office during
business hours or before or after the class for a brief
conversation. Ask a question regarding the course material or
inquire about your academic progress. Getting to know your
professors may make it easier for you to ask for assistance
when you need it.
Learning styles inventory

 Learning styles

My learning style

My learning style is a visual

Characteristics of a visual learner:

Visual learners do well when they get to refer to notes. If you find that you
learn better by reading and looking at pictures, diagrams and graphs etc. the
chances are you're a visual learner.
I have answered learning style inventory questions to find out my learning
style. I am more into the type of visual learning style and before this I was
really easy to understand in auditory . Then, the types of kinesthetic and
auditory learning styles are sometimes simple and easy for me to understand.
Now I know my type of learning style and can stay focused on it.
Goal Statements — The Five Step Approach

Goal Setting
I. Goal setting is the process for your ideal future and motivates
yourself to turn this vision of the future into reality.
II. The goal setting process will help you go through life’s processes
III. Properly set goals can
motivate and compile you as
well as get used to and achieved
and you will feel your self-
confidence grow faster and
better.
The Five Step Approach

Step 1 : Tentative Goal Statement

 I want to maintain a GPA of 3.5-4.0
 I want to develop a good studying habit
Step 2 : List of Obstacles
 I have bad time management
 I procastinate a lot
Step 3 : List of Resources
 Rewards myself whenever I accomplish something
 Find some good reference to help me in studying
Forming a study group
Step 4 : Revised goal statement
 I work hard and study smart
 I will do a simple revision before going to class
 I will make my parents by getting excellent results
Step 5 : Polish goal statement
 I will never give up on my studies
 I will manage my time wisely
 I will sharpen my mentality
Topic 2: Time management and Getting to know the campus

Time Management

Time management is the processes of organizing and planning how to

divide time in between specific activities. Good time management enables
someone to work smarter not harder so that you work done in less time
span even when time is tight and pressure are high. Failing causes more
problems in succeeding.

Job Task Analysis

This Job Task Analysis is very useful for us to create our daily schedule based
on our current needs. For each activities, we calculate how much time should
we spent within 24 hours so we does not waste our time with things that does
not give benefits to us.

Topic 3: Memory,Learning and Improving Concentration

Memory Strategies

What is Memory?

 Is a process of acquiring, storing, retaining and later retrieving

information
 the ability to both preserve and recover information.
 Memory is the property of organism which ensures impression of
connections between the environmental events and accumulation of
living experience.

What is a brain?
 A brain is an organ that serves as the center of the nervous system in
all vertebrate and most invertebrate animals. It is located in
the head, usually close to the sensory organs for senses such as vision

Understanding Memory Processing

Memory is the process of taking in information from the world around us,
processing it, storing it and later recalling that information, sometimes many
years later.

Sensory Memory

 Records information from the senses for up to three seconds

 Examples are iconic (visual) memory and echoic (auditory) memory

Short Term Memory(STM)

 Holds about seven items for up to twenty seconds before the material
is forgotten or transferred to long-term memory

Long-Term Memory(LTM)

 Relative permanent, can hold vast amounts of information

Causes of poor memory

What is poor memory?

Poor memory is a problem that affects most people, to a degree.

Whether it's occasional forgetfulness or loss of short-term memory that
interferes with daily life, there are many causes of poor memory.
Strategies to improve memory

1. Understand the material

2. Have the right study environment
3. Space out your work
4. Repetition
5. Organize your learning material
6. Use Mnemonic methods
7. Think in pictures and colors
8. Association
9. Acronyms
10.Talk about what you have learn
11.Storytelling
12.Vary your study routine
13.Get enough sleep
14.Play games
15.Chunking
16.Funny sentences
17.Rote rehearsal
18.Elaboration
TASK : ACTIVITY 4.1
Orgazinational Strategies
Organize things into 3 groups or category to remember. You also can
remember more than 4 items in each category quite easily because the
headings help trigger your memory. For example;
TASK : ACTIVITY 4.7

1st Attempt

 Newspaper
 Pencil
 Boat
 Magazine
 Train
 Crayon
 Book
 Pen
 Bus
2nd Attempt

 Newspaper
 Book
 Magazine
 Comic Book
 Crayon
 Boat
 Bus
 Train
 Pen
 Pencil
 Chalk
 Automobile

During the activities , I can only remember 11 from all of the words. It is
Newspaper,Book,Magazine,comic book,crayon,boat,bus,train,pen,pemcil,chalk
and automobile. This is because I randomly try to remember the words
shown. When I try this activity again with the grouping technique I can
remember a few of them easily.
Concentration Strategies

 Concentration is paying attention and focusing on things we are

doing

Causes of poor concentration

Strategies to improve concentration

I find it hard to focus for a long period of time because I tend to get bored
especially if it doesn’t catch my interests to gain more knowledge about
it.Then in the previous class I completed the activity given by my lecturer.

As you can see,I got 4 over 10 marks for this activity and this indirectly
show that Im not good enough. So to improve concentration, I will have to
follow a strict schedule and need to change my mindset.
Concentration Charts

Subject Concentration Strategy

ELC121 Understand the subject Need to do more
reading
Mat112 Don’t understand some Need help from lecturer
chapters or friends and do more
exercises
PAD102 Can understand but a Need to do more
bit complicated reading and make notes
PAD101 Understand the subject Do more reading
IDA102 Understand the subject Read more
CSC134 Don’t understand much Do more reading

From the charts you can see that I have a lack of Understanding got
CSC134 and MAT112.Therefore I need to work harder on those
subjects to do good on my finals.
