10B Participle clauses

A Rewrite the sentences, replacing the relative clauses with participle clauses.
1 The actor who stars in the film isn’t very well-known.
2 Shakespeare, who was born in 1564, is one of Britain’s most famous playwrights.
3 Do you know the sculptor who’s creating the piece?
4 I’ve never heard of the drama company that’s putting on the musical.
5 The Mousetrap, which has been performed over 23,000 times,
opened in 1952.
6 The actor who played the role of Romeo kept forgetting his lines.
7 The portrait of Alice, which was drawn by her niece, looks nothing
like her.
8 The photographer who had been hired for the wedding arrived late.

B Rewrite the underlined participle clauses as full-length relative clauses.


1 The name of the first album released by Katy Perry in 2008 was Teenage dream.
2 At her wedding in 2011, Kate Middleton wore a tiara belonging to Princess Diana.
3 In Li Wei’s Boxing, the men standing on the skyscraper are packing boxes.

• Give each student a copy of the handout and ask them to do
task A. Check answers as a class.

• Ask students to do task B. Check answers as a class.

• Divide the class into pairs and allow them time to complete
task C. Encourage them to take a guess at the ones they
don’t know. Check answers as a class.

• To increase motivation, task C could be done as a
competition. Set a time limit in which pairs must correct
as many of the mistakes as they can. Then tell them to
exchange handouts with another pair. Check the answers
as a class and tell them to award a point for every correct
answer. The pair with the most points are the winners.
