    Moon Square

    Materials:
    Light worsted yarn such as Caron Simply Soft.
    Color A – white
    Color B – blue or black
    Color C – contrasting color of your choice

    Gauge:
    4 sc/inch. Recommend G hook.
    Finished square is 5.5”. Alternative is given for a 6” square.

    Abbreviations/Stitches used:
    sk = skip tr = treble crochet
    st = stitch V stitch = (dc, ch1, dc) in same stitch
    ch = chain DC Corner = (2 dc, ch2, 2dc) in same space
    sl st = slip stitch TR Corner = (2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in same space
    sc = single crochet RS = right side facing you
    hdc = half double crochet WS = wrong side facing you
    dc = double crochet

    Begin with an adjustable loop (aka magic loop). Here is a tutorial:

    Round 1 (RS): With A, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 17 dc in loop, join with sl st to top of first dc. (18 dc)
    Fasten off. Pull the loop tight to close the middle.
    Round 2 (WS): Join B with sl st in any dc. Ch1 (counts as first sc), hdc, 2 hdc in next st, (2 dc in next dc)
    twice, (2 tr in next dc) 3 times, (2 dc in next dc) twice, 2 hdc in next dc, hdc, sc. Leave 5 st from Round 1
    unworked. TURN. (22 st worked over 13 st)
    Round 3 (RS): Ch 1 (counts as first sc), sc, hdc, (2 hdc in next st) twice, (2 dc in next st) 3 times, (2 tr in
    next st) 6 times, (2 dc in next st) 3 times, (2 hdc in next st) twice, hdc, sc, sl st in beginning sc of Round 2.
    Fasten off. (38 st)
    Round 4 (RS): With A, join with sl st in the last sl st in Round 3, ch 1 (counts as first sc). Working in the 5
    dc from Round 1, work 2 dc, (2 dc in next dc), 2 dc. Working in Round 3 again, sc in each st around. Join
    with sl st to beginning sc. (38 sc + 6 dc = 44 st)
    Optional: place stitch markers every 11 stitches starting with the first sc in Round 4. These will become
    the corners with the upper point of the moon in the upper left corner.
    Round 5 (RS): Ch 4 (counts as first tr), (tr, ch 2, 2 tr) in same stitch as join (TR Corner made.) (tr, dc, hdc,
    4 sc, hdc, dc, tr, TR Corner) 3 times. tr, dc, hdc, 4 sc, hdc, dc, tr, join with sl st to top of first tr. Fasten off.
    Round 6 (RS): With C, join with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), (dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in
    same sp (corner made). *Sk next 2 dc. (V stitch, sk next dc) 5 times. DC Corner in ch-2 sp. Repeat from
    * twice. (V stitch, sk next dc) 5 times. Join with sl st to top of first dc. Fasten off.
    Round 7 (RS): With A, join with sl st in any corner ch-2 sp, ch 1 (counts as first sc), 2 sc in same sp. (Sc in
    each dc and sp to corner = 19 sc per side, 3 sc in ch-2 sp) 3 times. Sc in each dc and sp to corner. Join
    with sl st to first sc. (88 sc) Fasten off for 5.5” square, or proceed to Round 8 for 6” square.
    Optional Round 8 (RS): Sl st to next sc, ch 1 (counts as first sc), 2 sc in same st. (Sc in each st to corner =
    21 sc per side), 3 sc in next st) 3 times. Sc in each st to corner. Join with sl st to first sc. (96 sc) Fasten
    off.
