The following appeared in a report presented for discussion at a meeting of the directors of a
company that manufactures parts for heavy machinery.
“The falling revenues that the company is experiencing coincide with delays in manufacturing.
These delays, in turn, are due in large part to poor planning in purchasing metals. Consider
further that the department manager that handles purchasing raw materials has an excellent
background in general business, psychology, and sociology, but knows little about the properties
of metals. The company should, therefore, move the purchasing manager to the sales department
and bring in a scientist from the research division to be the manager of the purchasing
department.”

According to the argument, the company is facing falling revenues due to the delay in manufacturing.
The delay is happening due to penurious planning in the purchasing of metal. The Head of the
purchasing department is exceptional in general business, psychology, and sociology so the author
suggests changing the position of the head of purchasing department to the sales department and some
scientists to purchasing division from the research department. However, this statement has a few flaws
in its assumption while coming to the conclusion, which seems completely irrational as it ignores the
other factor which would have decreased the delay in purchasing metal.
To start with the argumentation, as per the reasoning we would suggest that there is no requirement for
any scientist from the research and development area to be appointed to purchasing department
because there is no research required for the purchasing of metal. Rather than any scientist, a person
with enhanced communication and bargaining skills with the knowledge of metal properties would be
perfect to be appointed as the head of purchasing department. So, the author’s explanation for
appointing the head from the research and development area is irrational.
Furthermore, the company is deciding to move the head of purchasing department to the sales
department as the head has knowledge of general business, psychology, and sociology, and if this is the
scenario the head also has to perform well in the purchasing department though having great
knowledge in general business but he could not able to do it. So as per the conclusion, the head also will
not able to perform well in the sales department as the knowledge. so rather than shifting the areas the
head’s position has to demote and some new more experienced person should be appointed.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the author’s reasoning as there is no requirement for knowledge
of the properties of the metal in the purchasing of the metal and secondly the author is talking about
the scientist appointed as the head of the purchasing department which is totally void as there is not a
requirement of any scientist in the dealing of metals so this statement is also null. As per the argument
company should more focus on the appointment of a person with good skills in communication,
knowledge of metal industries, enhanced bargaining skills, and experience.
