The following appeared in an announcement issued by the publisher of The Mercury, a weekly
newspaper.
“Since a competing lower-priced newspaper, The Bugle, was started five years ago, The
Mercury’s circulation has declined by 10,000 readers. The best way to get more people to read
The Mercury is to reduce its price below that of The Bugle, at least until circulation increases to
former levels. The increased circulation of The Mercury will attract more businesses to buy
advertising space in the paper.”
Discuss how well reasoned… etc.
According to the argument, “The Mercury” newspaper publisher suffering from a reduction in the
circulation of the newspaper by 10000 readers in 5 years since the introduction of The Bugle newspaper
publisher. Under the situation, the company came up with a new strategy by a reduction in the prices of
the newspaper so more people can buy in the attraction of lowered prices as compared to competitors,
which will boost the sales and the circulation of the newspaper. Confront to this more businesses will
buy a newspaper and the company will increase their profits. However, this statement has a few flaws in
its assumption while coming to the conclusion, which seems completely irrational as it ignores the other
factor which would have increased their circulation.
To start with the argumentation, the first flaw while concluding is based on a presumption that lowering
the price would increase their sales in the market which is totally illogical for the reason that the reader
will not buy the newspaper until the publisher will not provide the enhanced information to the
consumer as the bugle is providing more rational information to the reader and the quality content
maybe that would be the major cause of people shifting from Mercury to the Bugle.
Furthermore, from the introduction of the Bugle, the publisher is providing lowered price newspapers as
compared to the Mercury, so in this scenario, people will not shift newspapers easily because for the
last 5 years bugle is providing them the newspaper and in this long period the people are loyal towards
the Bugle.
In consonance with this, Mercury will lower the price of the newspaper to increase circulation which
rather will not affects the consumer for the reason as the Bugle is providing the news that the consumer
wants and useful for their businesses such as local news with the country news, and unless & until the
Bugle is doing that the people are not shifting from the Mercury to the bugle. So circulation of the
newspaper will not impact the consumer.
In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the author’s reasoning as the argumentation seems based on a
simple and obvious conclusion at first glance. However, people here are more interested in the content
of the newspaper as compared to the price of the newspaper. If the consumer gets a genuine and
interesting newspaper then readers will buy them. So here Mercury has to focus on content as
compared to price.
