The BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) is a statistical measurement using a person’s height and weight to
determine their “healthy” body weight. It is so easy to determine, which makes it so widespread in
use. Mathematically it is figured out by the equation on the right. Most people, however, just use a
BMI chart which are widely published.

The formula to compute for BMI is:

Weight: 55 kg. Height: 161 centimeters = 1.61 meters

Square of height: (1.61 x 1.61) m2
= 2.59 m2
weight = 55= 21.24
BMI = height22.59

Standard:
Less than 15 Starvation
Activity 15.0 – 18.5 Underweight
18.6 – 24.9 Normal
25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 – 40.0 Obese
Greater than 40 Morbidly Obese

Directions: Solve the BMI of the following students and provide the interpretation of each result:

Romeo
Weight = 60 kg. Height = 1.74 m. BMI =
Interpretation =

Glenda
Weight = 71 kg. Height = 1.72 m. BMI =

Jake
Weight = 93 kg. Height = 1.75 m. BMI =

Anna Marie
Weight = 55 kg. Height = 1.53 m. BMI =

Abstraction Physical Fitness refers to a set of attributes that an individual has or can achieve in order to
perform physical activities. It represents a complex assortment of components (health – related,
skill – related, and physiological) that affect our ability to function and be physically active. It has
been shown that children with lower levels of physical activity have higher levels of percent body
fat and poor cardiorespiratory fitness.

Two Components of Physical Fitness

HEALTH–RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS are characterized by moderate to vigorous

physical activity.

Cardiorespiratory endurance- This is the fitness of the heart, lungs, and blood vessels. It refers to
one’s ability to exercise the body continuously over long periods of time.
Muscular strength- This is the amount of force your muscles can produce.
Muscular endurance- This is the ability of a muscle or group of muscles to remain contracted
for a long period of time.
Flexibility- This is the ability to use your joints fully through a wide range of motion.
Body composition- It is the relative percentage of the different body tissues such as muscle, fat,
bone, etc.

SKILL–RELATED FITNESS COMPONENTS provide one a better view of his/her sports

inclinations and other physical activities.

Agility- It is the ability to move and change directions quickly.

Balance- It is the ability to keep upright posture while one is standing still or moving.
Coordination- It is the ability to use the senses together with the body parts, or to use two or
more body parts at the same time.
Power- It is the ability to release maximum force very quickly.
Reaction time- It is the time it takes to perform an action once a person realizes the need to act.
Speed- It is the ability to perform a movement or cover a distance is a short period of time.

Measurement of Body Composition

Directions: Give the data needed in the table. Compute your BMI and identify its classification
based on the standard given. Do this on a separate sheet of paper.

Standard:

15.0 – 18.5 Underweight
18.6 – 24.9 Normal
Application 25.0 – 29.9 Overweight
30.0 – 40.0 Obese
Greater than 40 Morbidly Obese

3. MSUCUALR SRETGTNH- It is the amount of force your muscles can produce.
4. BLACANE- It is the ability to keep upright posture
while one is standing still or moving.
5. PWOER- It is the ability to release maximum force
very quickly.

Directions: Answer the questions below on a clean sheet of paper.
