Lesson Plan

Name Matthew Brown

Prepare a lesson plan using the form below.

Date 3-23-23 Period
Topic: Rocks and Soils of Georgia ESS1.C The History of Planet Earth/ 3rd Grade Science Class
Objective(s) of lesson: What do you want the student to do as a result of your lesson? I want students
to be able to identify the different type of fossils. I also want to students to able to identify what type of
rock layers are capable of counting fossils, and to determine the type of wildlife associated with those
rock layers.

Pre-Assessment: What do the students already know? How did you determine this? Lesson S2P1 A:
goes over the properties of matter and how matter can change. Lesson S2L1 D: goes over the life cy-
cle of diverse organisms other than humans. Both of these lessons can be related to fossils and fossil
formation. An example would be how matter can change from a plant to a fossil. The other lesson can
describe where what fossils are located in what rock levels.

Materials needed/resources used: Be specific—include samples of any handouts to be used. Paper as-
signment that has multiple blank spaces to represent the different rock layers, Slide show that shows
multiple types of fossils and which rock level they belong to for the paper assignment. A couple of big
tubes filled with sand that represent soil that has pictures of different fossils at different depths in the
sand.

Procedure: Exactly how will this be presented to the class? I will put the class into 4 or 5 groups with
each group at a table or set of desks that has a tub filled with sand and markers on the side of the tub
that represents layers of rock, sediment etc. It will also represent of how old each layer of rock/sedi-
ment is, and where each type of fossil can be found at each level.

1. Introduction: How will you motivate the children? Since it will be a 3rd grade class with younger
students, I believe that the students will be motivated for the most part by being able to engage
with an activity that involves them finding fossils in the sand. I will place different a different
type of fossil at each level of dirt/sand etc. and then with the class uncover a fossil at a time then
give a couple of interesting facts about said fossil.

2. Development of the lesson: Step-by-step procedure: First I’ll make the tubs filled with sand and
fossils sometime before the actual lesson and put them in the from or back of class where they
won’t be in the way. Once the class comes in and it is time to teach the topic, I’ll pull up a power-
point in the front of class and hand out simple packets that’ll explain what were going to do and
have a couple of blank column spaces where the right fossils types go. I’ll be in the front of the
class going over the experiment that we’re going to do and when it is time to begin the interactive
part of the assignment I’ll instruct the class to get into groups of three or four, combine desk and
grab a tub and bring it to their group. I will then instruct the class to wait on me and go over

each sedimentary level of rock. The class will hopefully realize that different species of plant and
animal life reside at different levels of the earth. As I go over the lesson and students dig out the
different fossils, they will fill in the blank columns and understand the importance of fossils

3. Differentiation: How will this lesson be modified to meet the needs of all learners? As each stu-
dent is unique and have their own preferred way of learning, “Visual, Auditory, Reading, etc.
This lesson will provide visual learning from the powerpoint explanation, the fossil tub and me
doing the experiment with the class as well. The Auditory learning will come from me from
telling them the information on each powerpoint slide and if the class follows along, will know
where what fossils belong where. The reading learning will come the information on the actual
packets.

4. Summary: This should be an active recapping of what was taught. Students will learn about fos-
sils and what rock layers fossils can be found. Students will also relearn what the different rock
types are, but learn which rock types contain fossils Students will also learn about the evolution
and difference of the fossils throughout the sedimentary layers “sand”.

Assessment—How will you determine that the students have met your objective? This is your evi-
dence that learning had occurred. If you taught this lesson, attach samples (copies) of student work.
Be sure to white out names of students. If I do the experiment right and early in the week, a quiz
could be held a day or to later, I could also design the packets in a way that they could be used as
study guides, and if they study over the lesson and pass the quiz, I’ll know that some learning has
occurred and the students have met their objective

Self-Evaluation—To be done after lesson is taught and attached. What went well? What problems
did you encounter? If you teach this lesson again, what specific changes will you make to im-
prove this lesson?
The way this lesson is being described, it sounds like it came out of a textbook. Most likely younger
grade classes will enjoy the lesson since it allows them to have a hands on approach and be interactive.
If I could add some original aspects to the experiment, that could make it funner. One way to
make it funner would be to add sweets within the fossil molds, that could entice the class to search for
all the fossils. Another way to make it fun could be to add a video or two to the experiment like magic
school bus, that way the class won’t have to stare at the powerpoint for the whole class.
