TRAVERSING THE VIABLE FACTORS THAT MAY TAKE ASCENDANCY FOR

SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT’S CAREER CHOICES

Chapter 1

Introduction to the Study

Chapter 1 has five parts: (1) Background of the Study,

(2) Statement of the Problem, (3) Significance of the Study,

(4) Definition of Terms, and (5) Delimitation of the Study.

Part One, Background of the Study, justifies the need

for the investigation, and discusses the importance of

selecting the problem.

Part Two, Statement of the Problem, presents the

general and specific statements of the problem.

Part Three, Significance of the Study, cites and

explains the benefits that could be derived from the

findings of the study.

Part four, Definition of Terms, defines the important

terms for the purpose of clarity; and

Part Five, Delimitation of the Study, specifies the

limitation that governs the study.

Background of the Study

Making career choices is a critical and challenging

task for high school students as it sets the foundation for

their future. Students need to make well-informed decisions

considering various factors that may take ascendancy in

their career choices. In this context, it is essential to

traverse the viable factors that may influence students'

career choices and help them make informed decisions. This

essay will explore the significant factors that high school

students should consider while making career choices. It

will provide a comprehensive overview of the critical

factors, including personal interests, abilities, values,

future job prospects, and educational requirements. By

delving into these factors, students can gain a deeper

understanding of the career choices that best align with

their interests and goals, enabling them to make informed

and successful career decisions.

By exploring the factors that may take ascendancy in a

student's career choice, this study will help students

identify their personal interests, values, and abilities.

Students can then use this knowledge to select a career path

that aligns with their strengths, interests, and long-term

goals.
Additionally, by understanding future job prospects

and educational requirements, students can better prepare

for their chosen career path and ensure they have the

necessary skills and qualifications to succeed. Furthermore,

this study is significant as it can help reduce the number

of students who drop out of college or change their major

due to poor career decisions.

Providing students with a comprehensive understanding

of the factors that may influence their career choices, they

are less likely to select a career path that does not align

with their strengths, interests, or long-term goals. This

study, therefore, can play a crucial role in improving

students' academic and career success, ultimately leading to

a more fulfilling and satisfying life.

Most of the students may have a level of uncertainty

of where to get help on how to choose a career. Since career

is a lifelong plan, students at this level should be

assisted to enable them have a clear cut plan as it will be

difficult for them at their age to see things clearly about

themselves. Being in the stage of a small step to a better

future, there must be two sides of encounter; the pros and

cons of the student's journey; and what would be the

possibilities of outcome and they choose a certain career

choice.

Thinking or making a decision about one's career and

making a choice is vital. Stoner and Hattwick (1998) opine

that it is never too early to begin thinking about careers

when in high school.

Some students may have clear career decision in mind

while many of them will have little clue as to which career

is best for them. Fry et. al, further said "even if you are

a freshman or a sophomore, now is the time to begin thinking

about your life beyond college" p. 561. Various of people

choose jobs for various of personal reasons. A lot of people

looks for jobs that will pay well since everyone needs

money, especially here in the Philippines, for the basics

such as food, clothes, accommodation, education, recreations

and others. For many men and women, work helps define their

identity and their sense of self-worth and (Thio, 1989).

They see themselves as a people who are capable enough

to fulfill their decisions and to give virtue to their

choices. People who are responsible, who get things done and

competent enough to be paid for the services they render to

the society. Rao (1992) cited in Kankam & Onivehu (2000)

identified two factors that call for guidance and counseling

services or activities in secondary schools, one which is

the making of academic choice that in the end determines the

vocational future.

Statement of the Problem

This study aimed to determine the "viable factors that

may take ascendancy among Senior High School students career

choices".

More specifically, it sought to answer the following

questions:

1. How environment in which students find themselves

have affected their choice of career?

2. Why the perceptions of one’s personality have

affected the career choice?

3. How opportunities have affected students’ career

choice?

(Make it atleast 5 statement of the problem)
