Derive an expression for the shear stress induced in helical coil spring (compression) with
usual notation.
2. A helical compression spring is to be designed for an operating load range from 90 to 135 N.
The deflection of the spring for the load range is 7.5 mm. Assume the spring index as 10 and
factor of safety as 2. Design the spring.
3. The spring loaded safety valve for a boiler is required to blow off a pressure of 1.3 MPa. The
diameter of the valve is 65 mm and maximum lift of the valve is 17.5 mm. Design a suitable
compression spring for the valve. Assuming spring index to be 6 and providing initial
compression of 30 mm. Take τ = 0.45 GPa and G= 84 GPa.
4. A load of 2kN is dropped axially on a close coiled helical spring from a height of 250 mm.
The spring has 20 effective turns and it is made of 25 mm diameter wire. The spring index is
8. Find the Maximum shear stress induced in the spring and amount of compression produced.
Take G = 82.7 GPa.
5. A locomotive spring has a overall length of 1100mm and sustains a load of 75 kN at its
central. The spring has 3 full length and 15 graduated leaves with the central band of 100 mm.
All the leaves are sustained at 400 MPa when fully loaded. The ratio of total spring depth to
width is 2. Determine (i) width and thickness of Leaves (ii) Initial space that must be provided
between full length and graduated leaves before band is applied (iii) what load is exerted on
the band after the spring is assembled.
6. A truck spring has 10 leaves of graduated length. The spring supports are 1060 mm apart with
a central band width of 80 mm wide. The central load is to be 5.4 kN with a permissible stress
of 280 MPa. Determine width and thickness of spring plates and thickness. The spring should
have a ratio of total depth to width of about 2.5. To what radius should the leaves initially
bent for the spring to be flat when under the given load. Take E = 200 GPa.
7. A pair of high grade CI spur gear with 200 FDI teeth transmits 8KW at 900 rpm of pinion. The
transmission ratio is 4 and pinion has 20 teeth. Design the gears based on strength and check
for wear resisance.
8. Determine the number of leaves, width and thickness of a semi-elliptical spring from the
following particulars.
(a) Effective span of spring between hook = 1m
(b) Central load = 12 kN,
(c) Permissible stress = 500 Mpa
(d) Max. deflection =60 mm
(e) No. of full length leaves = 2
(f) Width = 20 times the thickness
(g) E = 2.065 x 10 5 MPa
9. Design a pair of spur gears with 14.5 FDI teeth to transmit 5kw with a gear ratio of 4:1. The
no. of teeth on pinion is 20 and rotate at 600 rpm. The material for the is cast steel heat treated
and that of gear is Phosphorous Bronze SAE65. Find the hardness in BHN. The gear is
subjected to light shock.
10. A locomotive spring has a overall length of 1100 mm and sustains a load of 75 kN at its
central. The spring has 3 full length and 15 graduated leaves with the central band of 100 mm.
All the leaves are sustained at 400 MPa when fully loaded. The ratio of total spring depth to
width is 2. Determine
(a) Width and thickness of leaves
(b) Initial space that must be provided between full length graduated leaves before band is
applied
(c) What load is exerted on the band after the spring is assembled
