Instructions: 1. Answer five full questions choosing one from each unit
2. Use of machine design data handbook is permitted
3. Missing data if any may suitably be assumed.
UNIT 1
1.
2.
a) With usual notations, derive the expressions for bending stresses in the extreme
fibers of a curved beam. State clearly the assumptions made.
b) A crane hook of trapezoidal cross section 90mm inner width, 40mm outer width &
120mm depth has center of curvature at 100 mm from inner fiber & load line is at
125 mm from the inner fiber. Determine the maximum load capacity of the hook if
the stress is not to exceed 120 MPa.
OR
a) Design a helical compression spring to support an axial load of 3000 N, the
deflection under the load being limited to 60 mm. The spring index is 6. The spring
is to be made of chrome-vanadium steel & the factor of safety based on elastic limit
in torsion is 2.
b) A multi leaf spring with camber is fitted to the chassis of an automobile over a span
of 1.2 m to absorb shocks due to a maximum load of 20 KN. The spring material can
sustain a maximum stress of 0.4 GPa. The spring has 2 full length leaves out of 8
total number of leaves. The leaves are assembled with bolts with a central band of
width 150 mm. Design the spring for a maximum deflection of 50 mm. Take E=207
GPa.
UNIT 2
3.
a) A simple band brake has a drum diameter of 500mm. A vertical passing through the
centre of drum also passes through the fulcrum which is 350mm below the centre of
drum. The length of brake lever is 800mm. One end of the band is attached to the
brake lever at a distance of 250mm from the fulcrum end and the other end is
attached to the fulcrum. Power absorbed is 30kW at a rate speed of 1000 rpm.
Selecting suitable materials and assuming an appropriate value for the factor of
safety, determine dimensions of rectangular cross-section of the brake lever
assuming that the depth is twice the width.

c) Compare the power capacity of a multiple disc clutch and a cone clutch. Both
clutches operate at the same speed. Both have the same mean diameter, same
coefficient of friction and same axial load. The multiple disc clutch has 4 steel and 3
bronze disc. The total cone angle of the cone clutch is 200.Assume uniform wear
theory for both clutches.

a) Derive an expression for beam strength of a spur gear tooth with standard notations

b) Design a helical gear pair to transmit a power of 15 kW from a shaft rotating at 1000
rpm to another shaft to be run at 360 rpm. Assume involute profile with a pressure
angle of 200. The material of the pinion is forged steel SAE1030 whose static
allowable bending stress is 172.375 MPa and the material for gear is cast steel 0.2%
C untreated with static allowable bending stress of 137.4 MPa. The gears operate
under a condition of medium shocks for a period of 10 hours/day. Check for
dynamic load, if load factor C=580N/mm and also for wear load. Take, helix angle
= 250 and number of teeth on pinion = 20

b) Two steel Bevel gears connect shafts at 90 , the pinion has a surface hardness of
300BHN and the gear has a surface hardness of 200BHN. The tooth profile is to be
of the 14.50 full depth involute and the module is 4mm. The number of teeth on the
pinion is 30 and the gear has 48 teeth. The face width is 40mm. Determine the wear
strength of the pair. What would be the power that can be transmitted based on the
above wear strength if the pinion rotates at 1440rpm.

c)
A full journal bearing having diameter of 50 mm and 100 mm long has a bearing
pressure of 1.2 N/mm2. The speed of the journal is 1000 rpm. The bearing is
lubricated at 75oc at the bearing surface having viscosity of 0.011 PaS. The room
temperature is 35oc. Take minimum film thickness as of diametral clearance. The
ratio of journal diameter to diametral clearance is 1000. Calculate the load that can
be supported, power loss due to friction, Oil flow through the bearing with side
leakage.
