12M503 DESIGN OF MACHINE ELEMENTS

[

Time : 3 Hours Maximum Marks : 100

INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Answer ALL questions. Each question carries 20 Marks.
2. Subdivision (a) carries 3 marks each, subdivision (b) carries 7 marks each and
subdivision (c) carries 10 marks each.
3. Use of PSG design data book is permitted.

1. a) What are the causes for stress concentration?

b) Explain any five common modes of failure.
c) i) A circular section in a shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 14 kN-m and a
twisting moment of 16 kN-m. Determine the diameter of shaft according to
maximum shear stress theory. Assume yield strength of the shaft material as 450
MPa. Take factor of safety =2.5, E = 200 GPa and Poisson’s ratio = 0.3.
(OR)
ii) A mild steel shaft of 50 mm diameter is subjected to a bending moment of 2000 N-
m and a torque T. If the yield point of the steel in tension is 200 MPa, find the
maximum value of this torque without causing yielding of the shaft according to
maximum principal stress theory
2. a) What is an axle? How does it differ from a shaft?
b) Define endurance limit. List out the factors which affect the fatigue strength.
c) i) A fuel pump pusher rod is to be designed for a repeated axial load of 10 kN. The
material of the rod has a yield strength of 400 MPa and an endurance limit of 175
MPa for repeated axial loading. The fatigue strength of the material for repeated
axial loading is 252 MPa at 1,00,000 cycles. For a factor of safety of 2, determine
the required diameter of the pusher rod for a finite life of 1,00,000 cycles and for
an infinite life. Take Kf = 1, size factor = 0.85 and surface finish factor = 0.9.
(OR)
ii) Determine the dimensions of flange coupling that connects a motor and a pump
shaft. The power to be transmitted is 2 kW at a shaft speed of 960 rpm. Select
suitable materials for the parts of the coupling and list the dimensions.
3. a) What is ‘nipping’? How is it done for leaf springs?
b) What is the need for shot peening springs? Brief on the shot peening process.
c) Design a helical tension spring for spring-loaded safety valve for the following data:
Operating pressure 0.65 N/mm2, Diameter of valve seat 65mm, Maximum pressure
when the valve blows off freely = 0.7 N/mm2, Maximum valve lift = 3.5 mm, Maximum
allowable stress for the spring material = 600 N/mm2,G=0.8 x 105 N/mm2 , spring
index = 6.

4. a) What is reinforcement in weld? What is its advantage and limitation?

b) A plate of 100 mm wide and 12.5 mm thick is to be welded to another plate by means
of single transverse weld and a double parallel weld. The plat is subjected to a load
of 50 kN. Find the length of the weld so that the maximum stress does not exceed 56
N/mm2.
c) Determine the size of the rivets required for the bracket shown in Fig.1. Take the
permissible shear stress for the rivet material as 100 MPa.

Fig.1

5. a) Distinguish between dry friction and boundary friction.

b) Describe the different types of failure in rolling contact bearings.
c) A ball bearing is required to resist a radial load of 10 kN and a thrust load of 5 kN.
The average life of the bearing is to be 5000 hours, with inner race rotation at
980 r.p.m. What basic dynamic load rating must be used in selecting the bearing? If
this bearing is to have a life of 5000 hours at a reliability of 97%, what is the required
basic dynamic load rating?
